FREDDIEM Posted January 23, 2022 Report Posted January 23, 2022 Czech Models FJ-1 1/48 scale. First model build since moving and setting up new work area. Any comments would be welcome.
johneaton Posted January 24, 2022 Report Posted January 24, 2022 I'll be watching, I've had one in the stash for a long time. Did you add the wheel well detail? Been awhile since I looked at the kit but I don't remember that.
FREDDIEM Posted January 25, 2022 Author Report Posted January 25, 2022 yes. I added sidewalls to the wells, some "stringers" and "hydraulic lines".
ghodges Posted January 27, 2022 Report Posted January 27, 2022 (edited) Excellent progress! I'm guessing the ball-peen hammer you're using to whack that into shape is JUST out of the picture.....is your kit vac canopy yellowed, and if so, how will you tackle that? Looking forward to seeing more! Gil Edited January 27, 2022 by ghodges
EdCarr Posted February 1, 2022 Report Posted February 1, 2022 Looks good so far. Is that Zinc Chromate or Interior Green (or something else entirely) in the wheel wells. I am asking because I have some aircraft models to build and I am wondering what you used to spray-paint the wheel wells with. I am looking forward to seeing the finished model here! 🙂
FREDDIEM Posted February 22, 2022 Author Report Posted February 22, 2022 It's my version of Tamiya zinc-chromate. I like Tamiya paints for a lot of things because they seem to be a water based lacquer. You don't necessarily need a primer. I especially like them for painting canopies. I can do a coat of interior color, then what ever exterior color is appropriate. This way it looks like you painted the inside. Here is the latest "installment" on the FJ-1. I just painted the seams with flat aluminum and now will use Ca to repair any flaws. The Flat Aluminum color shows any flaws at all. 1
Mark Deliduka Posted February 22, 2022 Report Posted February 22, 2022 Looks excellent so far! Keep it coming!
FREDDIEM Posted February 23, 2022 Author Report Posted February 23, 2022 The wings and stabilizers are on and reasonably set at the correct dihedral! Got my "mojo" working again! Trimmed the canopy ...... ready to put it on tomorrow....hang in there folks!
FREDDIEM Posted February 24, 2022 Author Report Posted February 24, 2022 The canopy is installed, the seams have been puttied and smoothed,,,,, Now it's time to mask the canopy and spray the cover coat. 1
FREDDIEM Posted February 24, 2022 Author Report Posted February 24, 2022 The canopy has been masked off and will be ready for paint as soon as it dries. Just good old masking tape and AMMO LIQUID MASK. Starting to really like that stuff 1
FREDDIEM Posted February 26, 2022 Author Report Posted February 26, 2022 It's drying time again.....coat of Future to seal everything and get ready for decals
FREDDIEM Posted February 26, 2022 Author Report Posted February 26, 2022 Future dries quick! Love it! Pulled the masking off the canopy and was really pleased with how well it came out. 1
EdCarr Posted February 27, 2022 Report Posted February 27, 2022 Cannot wait to see the decals on this! Looks like a fun build 🙂 .
Mark Deliduka Posted March 1, 2022 Report Posted March 1, 2022 Sweet! I wish I could get that result with my canopies! Brilliant work!
FREDDIEM Posted March 2, 2022 Author Report Posted March 2, 2022 Thank you! Taking a little break for my nerves! This is not going to be a "Magnum Opus"...... but, since I haven't really built anything for a few months it's a good project to get my "muscle memory" back! I am amazed as to how quickly we lose the skills if we don't continue to use them. Also.....the changes that have happened in the last year or so.....
FREDDIEM Posted April 3, 2022 Author Report Posted April 3, 2022 Finally got it done! Such as it is... 2
ghodges Posted April 3, 2022 Report Posted April 3, 2022 Excellent! That straight wing Fury is one of my faves (having built 3!) and I've also built several Czech Model kits; so I can really appreciate how much elbow grease it took to get that good looking result! Congrats, and thanks for letting us tag along. Gil 1
Mark Deliduka Posted April 3, 2022 Report Posted April 3, 2022 Brilliant smooth paint work! What a beautiful model! Your efforts paid off in spades! 1
Bradley25mm Posted April 5, 2022 Report Posted April 5, 2022 One of the most interesting aircraft subjects I’ve seen in quite some time. Glad to hear your back at the modeling table. Great job on this one. Looking forward to seeing more of your work. Chris 1
Stikpusher Posted April 5, 2022 Report Posted April 5, 2022 Good looking finish Fred! Man that aircraft sure looked a lot better once North American redesigned it with swept wings and tails. 1
