Problem with Gloss coat to cover decals
JayMesawitz replied to burner12's topic in Tools, Tips & Techniques
Richard, My modeling genre is automotive so polishing paint is not only common place it is expected in most cases. I use the detail master polishing set of 6 grits from 3200 to 12000. I have buried decals under the clear coat with as few as 3 coats. As far as going too deep and cutting through the clear and into the paint or decal below, yes, care is required. Perhaps my technique and experience do not translate to aircraft or what ever subject matter you're dealing with. Sorry. -
Problem with Gloss coat to cover decals
JayMesawitz replied to burner12's topic in Tools, Tips & Techniques
Decals have a thickness and lay on the surface of the paint. Clear coat over them applies a layer to both paint and decal. This does nothing to balance the surface difference between the two. That is where polishing comes in. You will want a thick enough clear coat to be able to polish away those edges feathering them in. I have used the detail masters polishing cloths and pads. I use the snot out of them. They are great. I have had mixes results with polishing Future however. It does not dry as hard as a true paint and clogs up the sanding medium even wet sanding but it can be done. -
1952 Ferrari F500 (Revival 1/20)
JayMesawitz replied to Wildcat's topic in Cars, Trucks, & Motorcycles
I checked out a couple of these Revival kits from a vendor at the Modelpalooza show in Orlando last year. They looked like a pretty nice kit but I opted to pass on buying one (55-75$ range as I recall). I will have no regret if it turns out to be a diamond in the rough that I passed up. I have plenty to keep me going but I do look forward to your progress and comments regarding this tooling. -
The one on the bench right now.

Fantastic result from a so so kit. Thanks for sharing

As always Mike, Impressive work.!!!

I think it is a great idea. Really opens up the possibility for reader feedback regarding the atricle and for posting questions if any remain.

Chassis looks great. Coming along nicely. Did you give your consingee links to see you in progress posts? If he's following along, I know he would be happy.

Crazy what you can find.

looks like you have your hands full with this one. Nice save on the suspension parts.

I'm a bit saddened. The heck with the working head lamp gimick... glue them in place alligned, closed or open and move on. You have a pretty good piece in front of us. I'm back working on the Grey Enzo I started before the Prius kit review and this morning one of the body panels went into the stripper bath for the third time.

Nice start. Maybe this one will take you longer than a week (jealousy speaking) My last project went 9 weeks on a glorified snap-tite. I'll be back for all the updates. -
Very nice. Your finish looks flawless. Beautiful!

RB Motion is a good suppier. Personally, in 1/24 I use a fine solder and cut my own. The stuff I use came from radio shack and is about .5mm. It cuts easily with a hobby knife, It may not have the absolute dead nuts profile of a valve stem but for my money... Cut to size, glue in place, add a dab of black paint to the end for a cap and it looks every bit as good to my eye.

I have really spoiled myself with foreign kits. I haven't built a Revell or AMT in a long time. Maybe I should. They can be quite the handful. As always, I'll be back for every update. Nice start.

This one is finished. Man! I'm slow. Check for the written review to be posted soon. Thanks for looking

That went quick ! Very nice.

Starter makes a nice kit. I'll check back for updates. Just out of curiosity, do you use the screws to attach the chassis plate? I have in the past. Contest judging and the whole looking at the underside thing has me wondering if a different approach would not be better/expected.

Tiny nuts, bolts, studs & washers
JayMesawitz replied to TheWalrus's topic in Tools, Tips & Techniques
There is an ebay seller - rbmotion - that has very tiny items like you describe. Although I just did a quick search... he has nothing posted at the moment. He usually has stuff up 24-7, He may still be recovering from the nats for all I know. His stuff is worth a good look. On ebay use the advanced search to search by SellerID. Here is his web site too R&B Motion -
Hey it matches her dress. Love it!!!

Well that was a quick project. The wood grain dash, crisp clear instruments and smooth gloss paint are all remarkable.
