  1. Hi All, Here is another recent build. The old faithful P-51D! This build is done in real aluminum skin. Took about 200 hours due to the real metal, that always adds about 100 hours onto the build time lol! Hope you like her. Rick

    Tamiya P-51D WIP

Hello fellow modelers! I'm branching out from science fiction builds and trying a WWII piston powered plane, the P-51D. I'm also using the Eduard Zoom PE prepainted cockpit detail set for this model, but I'm not very impressed by it. Don't get me wrong, Eduard makes great PE, but I probably won't be getting the prepainted stuff again. I've had to mask parts of it and the paint peeled right off leaving bare metal beneath it. Fixable? Sure. A pain? That too. The cockpit is pretty well done - I did some light chipping with silver and an oil wash of engine grease over the zinc chromate green. That was my first time using an oil wash I made myself versus a pre-packaged enamel wash from Tamiya. I don't think I'll ever go back, as you have so much more control over consistency and transparency. Plus the oil works as a filter, and doesn't dry splotchy like the enamels always seem to. I plan on hitting the cockpit with some matte clear tonight, then buttoning up the fuselage when that's all dry. If you've got any tips, tricks, or constructive criticism I'm all ears (eyes?).
  3. I am converting a Napier Sabre powered Eduard 1/48” scale Tempest Mk. V to a Bristol Centaurus radial engined Tempest Mk. II. Due to illnesses in the family, I have not had the time to research the online hobby shops lately. I am just now getting the chance to do that. The letter and number decal sheets I have are simply not big or quite accurate enough to cover the bottom port and starboard wing areas. I could modify the decal sheets I have by grafting pieces of other decal sheets to the ones I have. Rather than do that, does anyone know offhand where I may find more accurate lettering/numbers online? Many thanks guys and stay safe. Mark
  4. Seeking decals for the Williams Bros. 1:72 C-46 commando. I have the decals with the original (mid-1970s) release, and it has the blue of the US insignia too light. Plus, it's for a natural medal one and I want to do one in Olive Drab over Neutral Gray. I know Caracal Models has a sheet coming out sometime later, but I would like to get something sooner. I am planning to build the C-46 for a chapter display project. Any help in this matter would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance.44 Bob

  17. Just so y'all know I haven't abandoned the project, a brief update. Basically, the last two months have been a crawling disaster. Everything from my stepdaughter's surgeries to multiple car trouble and pnumonia for me. Finally getting back to building models, so should have some new build photos before long.

  19. Those of you who were familiar with the aviation art of Tony Weddel will be saddened to hear of his death. Tony passed away on August 2, 2015 at the age of 73. He had been in a nursing home in Glen Rose, Texas for the last ten years or so as the result of a stroke and heart attack. Most of his prints are no longer available, although a few show up from time to time on ebay. Other than that, eight different prints...including 2 P-38s, a B-17, an Me-410 and a UFO...can still be seen and purchased from http://scalepublications.freeyellow.com/art%20tn.htmlas long as the supply lasts. If you've never seen Tony's work, you've missed a tremendous talent. He was my friend. I'll miss him.
  20. There's nothing like having the original tech orders that specified how camouflage was to be applied to aircraft, both Air Corp and Navy, in WW-II. Even better are the exact specs for insignia and the dates when each insignia style was used. 51 years ago, Jay Frank Dial...a professional modelbuilder and amateur aviation historian...produced a thin book that summarized that information using nothing more than the original tech orders as his source. Jay passed away many years ago and his book has become virtually impossible to find. Since I knew Jay at the time he produced the book, I have an original. To honor Jay and to make that original material available to one an all, I have produced his book in a downloadable PDF format. It has also been enhanced with an index to make finding the information easier, along with ten photos of actual aircraft to help you see what the camouflage patterns really looked like. Viewable with an Adobe Acrobat Reader or print out any or all of it as a hard copy. Price is a paltry $9.99 and can be purchased by going to this link: http://modelersweaponsshop.freeyellow.com/camouflagebook.html
  21. Hi all, Just a heads up to let you know that a photo gallery disc on the F-16 will soon be available from Scale Publications, probably within the next two to three months. Assuming I don't melt from the current heat wave here in Texas. The disc will contain well over 900 photos and better than 5,000 navigation hotlinks. All photos are captioned. Coverage starts with the Design Concepts and goes all the way thru to the Thunderbirds. Along the way you'll find coverage on the F-16XL, F-16I, Mitsubishi F-2 and the various experimentals, including the little known tailess version of the F-16XL. The disc will be available as a data DVD (too much data for a CD-ROM)and possibly as a downloadable .ISO so you can burn your own disc. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who would be interested in the disc. I'll keep your email address on file and let you know when the disc is ready. Richard Marmo
  22. This month we're goin' commercial. Any vehicle, A/C, or implement is fair game. Bull dozers, cranes, police vehicles, fire trucks, lawn mowers, (you get the drift I hope) are all eligible so let's see what you got. Be sure to hold off posting until the first of the month.
