  1. Gil, you don't see anything about contests because they aren't important "over there". The majority of modellers (note the sp) build for themselves or for SIG or club display. I actually don't see that much aftermarket used, at least in the little world I hang out in. I did find Fred's early comment about modeling magazines today not teaching basics to be right on. The old Airfix Magazine, for example, taught one how to build, to modify/convert, to scratch build and gave you lots of history to go along with it all. Not today.
  2. Solves the tail-sitter problem neatly !
  3. Well Done, Ron ! That same project is on my bucket list (even have the Ajax, some White Ensign details, and some spare parts on the shelf waiting) so I'll save a link to your work here to help me along.
  4. Thanks, Clare - the rigging is photoetch, from the Starfighter kit. All I did was cut, fit, & glue (and watch my camera angles). Since there have been a couple questions, here is a picture of the Starfighter set: And now I've outted myself - that I didn't put them all on :o
  5. Thanks, Gil. I agree on the Goshawk - my first one was the old Berkeley control-line kit "a few years ago". You make a good point on the Lindberg kit and I might go looking for one, but then I've always been a CA fan.
  6. The Monogram 1/72 F11C-2 Goshawk modified to the BFC-2 using the Starfighter conversion set and scratching up a simple 500lb bomb release. I based this model on the one on display at the Pensacola Naval Air Museum; most of the decals came from the Starfighter conversion sets except I had to mix and match to get the right codes and serials. The green bands on the fuselage and wing are decals and I had to play in my Vallejo greens until I got something close for the cowling.. There a few flaws and shortcuts here - I used this as a test run for doing the same conversion, only better and with more bomb release detail, to the Classic Airframes kit ....
  7. K & S are the manufacturer/wholesaler and I have nothing nearby (less than 2-3 hours) that retails them. Probably have to hit an RC shop. I have some of their steel rod, usually in 12" rods.
  8. When the tubes of brass rod I bought a number of years ago, started to get empty, I went looking for Small Parts to order more and ended up on Amazon Supply, which a little research revealed that Amazon bought 'em out. OK, looking for .012", .020", .032" (these are the 36" long rods, several to a tube BTW). .012" which I really need (down to my last 36" rod), is out of stock. .020" which I will need (down to maybe two rods) isn't even listed. .032" but I don't really need it by itself. So has anyone got a source for this stuff other than Small Parts / Amazon ? TIA
  9. I see you have "midnight requisitioned" some realtor yard signs :) I'll note that one (the only) benefit of elections is the availability of campaign signs for this purpose also.
  10. Good work, Ron !! I have that same project planned, but I'll wait to rip off emulate your work.
  11. Actually, hot-linking is looked on as discourteous and the admins on the forum where the hot-link is placed should handle the problem. But since the world isn't always courteous, it would be nice if we could either prevent it from our side or even more fun, place a polite "naughty boy" message there instead of the photo itself. I will continue to host my own pictures ....
  12. .. I am confused. I thought you (& others) were talking about an image imbedded in a post that could not be accessed from elsewhere. I right-clicked & saved it to my machine. I hovered, got the URL and made it show up on another website. ????
  13. . No need to extend, I'll treat it like work - go in late and leave early to make up for it. :D
  14. And the cost for IPMS to host some member photos should not be borne by all the members, particularly when there are a number by options from the free photo-hosting sites, the webspace provided by some ISPs with an email account, to simply purchasing your own for a small amount compared to hobby expenses. I suggest we would not increase participation, just sign-ups by folks who wanted to use their space here to host photos elsewhere.
  15. I have a thought, but couldn't start until late Dec or January.
  16. . No, Gil, you are supposed to take the dents out :)
  17. I voted keep as is. Some modelers have build (WIP) threads in the genre modeling forums - no problem. Some modelers have a build/workbench/WIP thread in the WIP forum - no problem. Let the modeler chose ... please don't make sub-forums inside the genre forums.
  18. I agree with Rob, any GB needs to be more a theme than a subject to encourage a broad range of interests. OTOH, I had another thought -- how about a couple-three GB's that are NOT military (including not sci-fi military), or at least military before 1900.
  19. You could paint the solid part (where you glue the barrel) black as if you can't see in there, then the edge of the hull around the gun port red and the inside of the cover red. Or just do the solid part red also, as if you can sorta see in there.
  20. I think my drawing is close to "as built", and the kit may reflect a later version.
  21. Ron, I have Friedman's "U.S. Amphibious Ships and Craft", ISBN 1-55750-250-1. pg 258 has a small top & side view of Carronade. I believe you are correct on the 40mm director. I believe the object on the forward stepped down area looks like a rangefinder, but that is just a guess. I do not believe the object one deckup is a radar, however. I can scan/email the drawing if you wish. The text is not helpful. John R
  22. This apparently cannot be stated often enough -- as a non-profit we are severely limited in what we can earn from outside the society (non-members) without loosing that non-profit status - and we are audited annually by the IRS. While we appreciate the suggestions, this is not something we take lightly as we have to deal with it a number of times each year.
  23. Just a reminder that we have made a start at Quarterly & Update availability: http://forum.ipmsusa3.org/index.php?/topic/13043-ipms-update-articles-now-available/
