1300-ish EST Sunday 25 Jan 2009, 1 down, 23 to go Flying surfaces white primered & dry -- I'll start on tail 1st as that fits to fuselage and is in line with instructions (yes, I read 'em) ... Interior hit with a red-brown spray -- call it nice mahoghany paneling. The I got (??) idea to cover inside of windows in very thinh white brushed vertically to simulate the curtains I've seen in some pix .... And in a repeat of last year, I started work on the stand, to be done in Tamiya Metallic Black ... looks nice that way ...

1200 EST Sunday 25 Jan 2009 Well, I'm off. I'll follow on last year's build with another Airfix 1/144 classic airliner -- this time the HP42. At least I don't have to worry about 3 colors this time. As usual, I'll probably take the "beloved senior citizen" (aka wuss) option and break my build -- but I will see if I can get through in one sitting. As with last year, I have waited until SWMBO went off to "quilting camp" to avoid distractions. In my photo below, you will see a pile of kit parts -- I actually have bits from 3 kits. Only one came in a box, the other two in bags and there are a lot of loose, broken, missing parts. I have more than one of some out because of the part # tags on the struts. Only one set of decals is useable. At least I have one complete set of parts -- last year I had to "repair" two props. In the build I think I'll try two enhancements: -- rigging: the Warren Truss on the wings means most the work is in the tail section and can be representative. -- sand down the wing ribs: the fuselage corrigation is liveable, but the fabric sag is simply too much. I think that'll only take a couple-three hours. I decided not to try an interior, although I might do something other than black hide-it paint ... What else, well - there's the coffee mug; the Guinness will come out later. Not shown, but on the periphery, are a few of my other projects that I might whack at while waiting on something to dry -- Eduard 1/48 Lizzie, Tamiya Spitfire being made into K5054, Combrig 1/700 Dreadnought, Resicast Rolls Royce Armoured Car. Oh, yes, the music machine is charged up with a thousand or so Bluegrass and Cajun tunes. The cell phone is my official time-piece - the photo on it is my grand-daughter, a year old this week. I regret the only clock (shown here) meeting UAMF "standards" is inop, despite my spending an hour winding, lubricating, and applying percussive maintenance yesterday. I can see I'm going to have to do something about glare on the cell ... My "plan" is to: -- primer the flying surfaces so I can see contrast better when sanding down ribs. -- work on fuselage while primer drys -- sand flying surfaces -- finish it somehow (plan gets fuzzy here) ...

Bob, Eduard site has instruction sheets for their "real" DH-2 kits ... Try these 3 links from the Profi-Pack kit: http://www.eduard.cz/products/pdf/n80/8094_10.pdf http://www.eduard.cz/products/pdf/n80/8094_11.pdf http://www.eduard.cz/products/pdf/n80/8094_12.pdf HTH

Tim, Drop the "1/" ... Divide the FROM by the TO 350 / 48 = 7.29 or 729% But most copiers can't do that in one jump so you have to work up in stages Square root of 7.29 is 2.7 (270%) so scale part up by 270 then scale result up again by 270. If copier won't do 270%, the square root of 2.7 is 1.64 (164%), so do it 4 times ... John

Mike, Outstanding !!! I have the whole range and just (barely) started the 6lb James ... Could you provide some detail as to how you did the barrel ? I've seen lots of 'em but don't have much idea on how to achieve that effect ... Thanks,

Tell me about it !!! When I did my Swordfish review I wanted the hand-painted look of the 816 Sqn invasion stripes -- thought a Sharpie just the thing to do the fine outline of the white end stripes on the fuselage !!! Spent several days repairing that !!! John

Lighting The Work Area.
JohnRatzenberger replied to Mike Lindsey's topic in Tools, Tips & Techniques
I have a 3-bulb ceiling fan, a stand-up single bulb lamp, and another clamped to the bench -- all with Ott-light equivalents -- and I have an Ott-light ... I also have a window & a half that get some decent daylight. I rarely model at night ... I also wear clip-on +4 magnifiers ... I can never have too much light and what I have seems to be pretty good for colors, etc. I spent money an effort to keep my eyesight from getting worse ... It's a wonderful hobby but not at the cost of my eyes. -
I "ziploc" parts in the boxes after opening/fondling ... I like clear plastic trays & lids that snacks come in to hold parts, sub-assemblies, etc while working and then I put a lid on them if I haul 'em to club meetings or push them off to the side for a while ...

I used same site but not because Andy & I are in same club, just by accident -- the info is great and I highly recommend it. Get a decent pole blower and rig for down draft. I built a plenum into mine, put a cheap filter in that and a dog guard grate above it -- all vented direct outside. The booth is large because the whole bottom is paint storage. With sides and a top, it keeps paint inside the booth and smells out of the house ... If you use anything other than acrlycs and water then don't go the bathroom fan route ... get a good one -- remember regardless of the fan cost, it's in your house ...

While I'd agree the fabric might be lighter, what you've done with the ribs and spars is excellent. I think it would be interesting for you to try some black/white photos at angles similar to some of the original photos -- I'll bet it's a dead ringer !!!

Tim, In the British subject world, we live with sheets of generic roundels, flashes, codes, and serials. What particular aircraft in each/either squadron do you want to model ? I can send you decals. John

Try http://www.theaerodrome.com -- a WW1 modeling and historical site. If you cannot find a direct link, someone may be able to point you in right direction. I know Brit & German societys have extensive records, US might have some also.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SCI-FI FILM OF ALL TIME?
JohnRatzenberger replied to papasmurf's topic in Space, Sci-Fi & Fantasy
Lots of good ones ... I think I like reading Sci-Fi better than watching it, but here's 3 I'll watch anytime. 1. Star Wars IV 2. Galaxy Quest 3. Star Trek ? (saving the whales) -
In my (feeble) mind, one would "Sol" then "Set", but since that isn't the case, I've resorted to a big "1" and "2" magic-markered on the bottles ...

Great Models is a fine source, use 'em all the time. You can also try direct order from http://www.modelchoice.net

No, but I have found their replies are sporadic and I also have the suspicion that some ISP's block traffic to/from that site (see below). Anyway, out of 3 separate issues, they eventually responded to and resolved each. If you use POP/SMTP (like I do from Outlook Express), try sending an email directly from your host webmail (ie, from Earthlink.net), and see if that doesn't improve things -- I think, but do not know this was an issue on at least one, maybe two, of my communication problems. I also do not think that trying to email them from their website 'contact us' works.
