  1. The chapter re-charter form has space to record some of this info and I assume national is keeping whatever a chapter submits. Regardless, it makes a good starting point. If a chapter has a list of founding/former members (and their IPMS# is helpful) they might have lost contact with, then query the DLC or their RC to get their status, address, etc, and perhaps contact them for info.
  2. IIRC, invasion stripes were not used on the 4-engine heavy bombers unless they had a special role (VIP transport?). The invasion stripes purpose was recognition by itchy-fingered ground/naval folks, you couldn't see stripes 15-20 thou overhead ... Of course, I wasn't there, so ....
  3. That's why you wear a mask working with resin, Gil. :D
  4. I think we've had this thread a couple times, about 5-6 years ago, so I'll just point at this http://forum.ipmsusa3.org/index.php?/topic/4221-my-first-model-kit/&do=findComment&comment=39069
  5. Sorry, browsing through all this new & wonderful stuff on a computer screen simply doesn't replace standing in the store looking at the boxes, poking around in them, etc. That's what lead to trying something new. It's much the same with magazine stores, book stores versus a computer screen. My library had information. I'd go back, shed 40-50 years of so-called progress, in a heartbeat. Shop simple, build simple, enjoy more.
  6. Still have and am using mine. I set top speed on the box, then vary speed with a foot controller.
  7. This is mid-50's onward -- Mitchell's Department Store in the Fairfax Shopping Center, north of Wilmington, DE. We also had an Eckards at the other end with a smaller selection. Mitchell's (much) later became one of the biggest brass loco stockists on the east coast. The real hobby shop was down-town, a trip I could make by bus for a quarter. Vandever's Hobby Shop - had everything and like Clare, my interests shifted mostly to flying models for a while although Vandevers had Airfix kits in bags hanging on a rack so I worked my way through them. A magazine store also in town, carried all the hobby magazines and I got my Aeromodeller, Model Airplane News, RAF FR, Air Pictorial, and others there. And there was the public library and a small used bookstore -- all within maybe a 3x5 block area and as I went to the YMCA every Saturday, I could pretty much burn up a whole day in those places. Beats online hands down, take me back ....
  8. Gil, I don't enter any models but I register, get banquet tickets for myself and wife (throwing off the whole registrants vs banquet seats discussion), and get the pin, the decal, and the bag, etc. Also, rule II.20 Judges .... "Only Judges fully registered at the convention are eligible to join judging teams." Now I'm sure no one checks, and I don't even agree with it, but the rules are the rules .... FWIW.
  9. Good book. Made my first ever decal .... for a friend, still haven't made one for myself.
  10. The pilots are different scales because the wings and fuselage are also ! The wings are about right, but the fuselage scales out to about 1/64 maybe larger. You've done a nice job, as usual.
  11. That's just great Gil and your build thread has been a pleasure to follow. You ought to bring it to Columbus, it'll be fun to see in real life. So, what's next, B-52 ?

Google "M915 gun truck" for images; it's an odd looking thing ... Very Strange indeed John, Looks like something out of a Mad Maxx movie. Well, if they hadn't built over the 5th wheel, it could have pulled a tanker
  13. Just FYI, I do not see a FROG P-40, but do see the FROG Gloster Whittle E28/39 in the upper right corner.
  14. Almost there, just the little stuff and a hangar in your back yard ....
  15. Got mine. After 65 years modeling, I just might print my own decal

  17. Good tip! I do a figure-8 - it places one side leading as you go down the 8, then the other side as you go back. Every 2 or 3 cycles, I rotate the part 90-degrees. I get (more or less) equal sanding and pressure and end up with a pretty flat bottom (the part, not mine).
  18. Good stuff Gil. Resin. -- The Hasegawa Try-tool saws and the CMK saws are great for cutting pour blocks. -- Do not try to cut with a knife blade -- although it really depends on the manufacturer of the kit/part and how they attach parts to pour blocks; I can probably cut 80% of a Resicast kit with a simple score using a sharp #11 blade because of the way they do their parts, others not so. Photo-etch. -- I bend most my small parts against my thumbnail using appropriate tweezers or pliers to hold the parts (not the thumb). -- I use a single-edge razor blade as a bending tool, fits under most everything.
  19. No problems here. Thanks for cleaning it up, and for responding to suggestions (flag, model-pix, etc) as they come along. Well Done !
  20. Well, Small Parts / Amazon Supply seems to work. After checking in once a week or so, I found the 0.12" in stock and ordered enough to have a few to take to my grave. I did find some RR shops, like Walthers, carry some - again, iffy what they have when. Like Pete, I avoid overpriced K&S.
  21. Another suggestion on models on front page is to cycle through review kits, once you run out of Nationals winners - put them on a rotating display, keep maybe 10-12 on the cycle for a week then freshen with another dozen ...
  22. Thanks, I kinda blundered forged ahead on my own, loosing the walrus-look and taking some bulk out before I chickened out. I also took down the jutty-chin a bit and built up between the chin & lower lip a bit. I got under the moustache with a sharp blade and took the lower lip down. Better, I think - never be exact. I'll do some more pix once I get a reasonable face paint job .... BTW, sorry about the shadow from the hat - got to do better at photo'ing also ...
  23. That looks excellent, Gil ! As always a lot of really good modeling going on here !
  24. Here's my project - my first ever attempt at a figure/bust, other than a few sorry air and vehicle crew. It is the Pony Soldier bust of "Nathan Brittles", but as you can see, and they admit on the instruction sheet, it isn't John Wayne. For those who don't know: John Ford, Cavalry Trilogy, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Nathan Brittles, John Wayne. I'd like to modify the bust to look more like the movie character. I'll leave the long hair alone. I think I can figure how to carefully sand the (resin) chin to a more rounded shape; that the face will not be as full I'll ignore. The moustache is a problem - actually two problems because assuming I get it cut down, then we'll find that we have no lips under it. Any suggestions on a way to deal with the moustache & lips without trashing the whole thing ? TIA. And yes, this is probably a stretch idea given I don't even know how to paint figures, but ....
