  2. One can understand why magazines are looking to go digital. As an example the IPMS UK magazine costs approximately £36k sterling to publish and distribute, so no wonder the suggestion of going digital rears it ugly head regularly. So far it has been resisted, but who knows what the future will hold? A paper magazine is much a more tactile way of reading just like turning the pages of a good book.
  3. That's a very pretty build, and being from scratch is all the more impressive! I'd be interested in seeing a few in-progress pics to see what methods you used. That's also quite the unique collection of Golden Age racers too! Thanks for sharing! Gil
  4. After getting to see this model once again; 3 years later, it's JUST as stunning an achievement as when I first saw it. I hope it's found a home in a museum somewhere so that others can enjoy it! Gil
  5. Although the pics say otherwise, that interior framing LOOKS like wood! Nice! Gil
  6. It will be interesting to see what changes, if any, occur under the new management. Perhaps the one bright spot is that there IS a company that sees a future in publishing Fine Scale Modeler and the other Kalmbach magazines. I've subscribed pretty much continually since FSM was stated in the early '80s and plan to continue to do so, at least for the immediate future with the new publisher. Although I know there are advantages to going digital, the day they end the paper magazine is the day I quit subscribing to them. Gil
  7. My earliest issue is from '83 so I've been a reader for a long time, except the period when they didn't have cars due to the separate mag. I hope they will stay around and stay in print but a lot of things are going digital. Apparently the cost of paper has skyrocketed. When "Amazing Figure Modeler" went digital they changed from quarterly to bi-annual but doubled the pages. The articles are great, there are often links to videos by the writers and the pictures are better than in the printed magazines. The downside (sides) are that you have to scroll around through the page, worry about the tablet if you're carrying it around and you can't roll up a tablet. (or swat spiders with it)
  8. That is some cool stuff. Dave

  11. This review covers the Don (Big Daddy) Garlits’ Swamp Rat XXX Top Fuel Dragster 1:25 Scale Atlantis H7152. Saved from oblivion Atlantis has reissued this model. It’s made in the USA and soon to hit model retailers everywhere. In the drag racing world, they don’t come any bigger than “Big Daddy”. He helped make changes for safer racing and his designs live on in the modern era. He’s a legend to his fans and his numerous championships, speed records and innovations made drag racing what it is today. Originally issued in 1987, I don’t think it’s been seen in decades. This brand new re-release from Atlantis Models has 77 pieces, molded in white, chrome and clear with vinyl drag racing tires and nice-looking waterslide decals. Included is a replica figure of Don Garlits. View the full review
  12. This is not my first review of a Detail & Wonder after-market landing gear set. And, as previously noted, this landing gear ‘Upgrade Set’ continues to set a very high bar in terms of both accuracy, price, and overall quality. Thanks for taking a few minutes to read these notes. 14. Oh well. Let's see what happens shall we? Seen many modelling magazines come and go. The UK magazine Scale Models International ran for many years since the late 60's when firs published. The original Airfix magazine that came out in the very early 60's published by Patrick Stephens had a long life before its demise. And now possibly we might lose Fine Scale Modeler too that must have been around from the early 70's. Scale Auto, also no more after approximately 30 odd years. You sort of get used to long running model magazines, a bit like old friends if you like until they are gone.
  15. Got the front end put together finally. Little adjustments here and there to make it the correct track. Tie rod and steering is also done. The wheels are held on to the axles with small bolts and washers. inside the axle tubing is a piece of plastic rod that was drilled out for the bolts. The wheels spin freely on the brass bushings inside each wheel.

  17. A big “thanks” to the distributors Casemate Publishing for providing IPMS USA this compact encyclopedia of the first fully-supersonic fighter in Europe with the United States Air Force. We fully appreciate your support! This book is not to be overlooked by anyone who has even a fleeting interest in “Hun” operations in Europe. It is a definitive work in that the time period addressed was one of Cold war operations before USAFE congealed into the large force on the continent and UK most of those associate with the 1970-90 time period. Libya was a major training location for F-100 operations, and as the aircraft were phased out to be replaced with more modern tools of aerial warfare, so too were the continually changing political fields of potential conflict. 18. Green Stuff World Weathering Sticks are disposable sponge paint brushes that can be used to create stipple effects on models, similar to using bits of a sponge dipped in paint. The weathering sticks are like a pencil and in a much easier to use form than bits of sponges. The sponge material is enclosed in a white plastic sleeve, and the sponge can be pulled out and cut off to provide a new surface. The sponge can also be cut to different shapes to create different effects. The weathering sticks come in two sizes, 8mm and 15mm. The 15mm size comes two to a package and the 8mm comes 3 to a package. View the full review

  20. GENERAL: I rarely build 1/72 armor now, but this is a kit of the M60A1, which I commanded while serving in the US Army. I never operated this version, but it will add another variant to my collection. Academy has produced a 1/72 version of their previous 1/35 USMC M60A1 MBT as deployed by the USMC in DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM in 1990/91. The sprues are arranged differently than their 1/35 version of the same vehicle. It is very nicely detailed, there was no flash, mold seams were minimal and easily removed as the plastic is easy to sand. Parts fit, with a few exceptions, such as the road wheel arms to the underside of the hull, is excellent and very little filling was required. Filling large gaps in the lower hull above the final drives and the underside of the fender mounted sponson boxes (see photo #15) was necessary. View the full review
