More fantastic work! That looks far larger and more detailed than a 1/72 scale bird. You've done outstanding!

Used super fine wet sanding to polish down through the black paint into the aluminum paint underneath on the back side of the blades. Front and back will get some pastel fading too. Looks like a prop nearly ready for overhaul.

Some dry brushing along the wing root foot traffic areas and I used a silver pencil around the ammo bay covers to simulate chipping. This is the first time I have tried the technique. I think it will be a good way of doing chipping. I need some more practice.

This one is done! Five months later. I still need to glue the canopy on permanently, and build the base, but it's done. I'll get some good photos with my better SLR and light box later. Here it is:

It has it's little issues, but I'm happy. Probably my best work in quite awhile.

Thanks for the moral support along the way. I appreciate all of your comments.

As requested, I'm moving this masterpiece to the "Aircraft" thread. GREAT job Rick!

Absolutely gorgeous! You really captured the "used" look of a Hellcat at sea. And I agree with Duke, the detailing makes it come off as bigger than 1/72. Congrats!

One of youz guys could have told me I left the top mask on the windscreen before I went to all that work!

Ok. If you will permit me to resurrect this thread, I'll show you the display base I just finished for the little Hellcat.

I made it using the DreamModels US WWII flight deck kit and a cheap 5x7 frame from Shopco. The kit has laser cut and etched plank strips, brass photo etched tie downs and styrene backing strips for the tie downs. I cut and glued these to a backing piece of .050 styrene roughed up with coarse grit sandpaper. I used Gator Grip Acrylic glue and I love that stuff.

I mixed some MM Deck Blue 20B and Navy Blue Gray about 3:1 and came up with a color I liked. I have no idea if its close and I don't care. It's just a display.

I intentionally shot the paint on thin and under applied so it would show the wear down into the wood. I put some black segmented lines on and wore them down with sandpaper. I added some tire marks with black pastel.

A brass name tag ordered online finishes it. I'm happy with how it turned out.

Dude, awesome. 20B + some darkening is about right for a flight deck.

Check this out. My White Ensign Colourcoats Flight Deck Stain 21 paint came in the mail today. I hand brushed some on a scrap piece and laid it on my deck.

I think I came dang close! Not bad for an airplane guy.

Nice finish to a really sharp piece of modeling.

Thanks for the very nice comments everybody. The little Hellcat did very well at a local contest last weekend. But I'm probably more satisfied with how the whole project pushed me and made me grow as a modeler.
