Dr.John H. Davis, a longtime Burlington, Vermont doctor frequently credited as the model for an iconic Army surgeon (Hawkeye Pierce) died this week after a shot illness. He was 77. Dr. Davis was a surgeon with Fetch Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont. He is remembered for his surgical care, teaching future doctors and helping Fletcher Allen raise its ability to serve as a high-level trama center. He is also remembered as the basis for Dr. Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H*, the popular book, movie and tv series starring Alan Alda. Davis, who was often was introdused at national conferences as "Hawkeye", had jokingly downplayed the media attention thrust on him by the author of the 1968 book, by Richard Hooker. Hooker, a former military surgeon, and Davis served together in the Korean War. Dr. Davis served in both WWII and Korea as a surgeon in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.

I am definately buying this kit. I have the Tamyia T-55 kit with lots of aftermarket stuff just waitting to be built already. Wounder if this is the same T-55 kit with a extra spruce thrown in. Either way who cares the T-55 kit is tops anyway.

Mark Great job on your build. Coming along nicely. Here is a Photo of the same vehicle that a guy entered at this years AMPSEAST. He did a complete interiour as well. I really liked this model and was thinking of building something in the IDF range at some point. Chris

This is really looking good. I must say doing PE in 1/72 scale is not for me. You are a better man then I. I remember winning a ton of PE in 1/72 at contest a few years ago. Gave it all to a club member. He tried to pay me for it, but as I said to him. "Buddy your are the one doing me the favor, I should be paying you" Question for you. What country is this going to repersent?

Well it is good to hear that I am not alone on this. From reading the responses I now have a better out look. Funny thing is is life is still happening. I mean take tonight for example. Got out of work a little early, My oldest son had a V-H.S.-basketball game sceduled about 2hrs away tonight, so I would not see him until around 10:30/11:00 pm. My middle son was off to snowboard and then stay over his friends house for the night. That left just me, my wife, and 10 yr old daughter at home. Was looking forward to a good quiet night of modeling. So around 3:30 the phone rings. It is my telling mew that the game was postponed and in stead he was having practice and need to be picked up in two hours. Then around 6:00 pm the phone rang and the on call road crew for the hospital I work for called asking me to come in an help out at 10:00 pm because they were going tp be max'ed out in approved hours. Well so much for modeling, Off to bed for a quick nap as I was expecting to be plowing all night (big Snow storm up here in Vermont). So at around 9:30 as I was getting ready to head in an the phone rings."Hey, quess what we don't need you now the storm is slowing down and we have a handle on it". Great there went a night of modeling. See even when I was in a happy place and looking forward to modeling no matter what I was in for, life happens. I guess this is my point. Life is getting in the way. As Gil pointed out I really need to learn not to take it out on my modeling hobby. Because it really is a hobby which means down time, happy place, fun, etc. I need to find that place.

Well my main model building season is in full swing and I have the modeling Blues big time. You see you know that you have the blues when you dread heading to the bench to work on models. This should never happen, as modeling should be fun and a way to relax an enjoy this hobby we love so much. Here is what is happening to me and why I have the blues. I have two models in the paint stage and almost ready for weathering. Two that I have started but are on hold waitting for aftermarket parts to arrive. Finally I have three that are in the building stage. The one on my bench right now that is giving me the most problems is the Tamiya Initial production that I am making into the DAK version. The build is progressing but with all the wrong problems to be had. Mainly flying or disappearing PE parts. Nothing drives me more crazy then having gone thru the trouble too sand away detail on a kit part and replace it with a great looking PE part only to have it fly away either as I am appling it or afterwards when I accidently hit it. Gone never to be found again. So what do you do. Scratch build. I don't have a problem with scratch building, but after I have already spent the money on a PE set, done the sanding the last thing I was expecting to do was scratch build. Now on top of all this throw in the kids sports scedule and events, the wife asking for "Family Time", home inprovement projects, and also work. Well time is limited. To say the least my stress is high. I have tried playing my kids XBOX Black Ops game and thinking that every person or thing that I kill, shoot, or blow up is the modeling problems that I am having. This actual does work and is very enjoyable, but takes time away from my modeling. So in the end I am only compounding the Problem. Well I just wanted to vent here a little an see if others are haveing or have had the same problem and what you did about it. For me I will just keep at it, I'm sure that it will get better.

As mentioned above the ShepPaine book and his how to build dioramas 1 & 2 books are invaluable. Some older ones in my collection more about general modeling but have a very good section on armor are: 1) How To Build Scale Models By FineScale Modeler Magazine 1992 2) Building Plastic Models by Kalmbach Books 1977 3) Hints and Tips for Plastic Modeling byKalmbach Books 1980 4) Realistic Military Figures by Lynn Kessler and Don Winar 1993 (figure go with armor diorama's) A really good one that is more current is: Step by Step Finishing German Armour by Glenn Bartolotti 2010

Martino, I order from oversea's supplier's all the time. My hands down favorite is JB models. As Mark suggested Spruce Brothers is a great US on line supply store. They ship fast too. In fact I just received today an order I placed on Wenesday. I'm not sure what you are looking for. There is a lot out there. Can you tell us what you are looking for to replace?

Welcome Bill, Always glad to have another armor guy onboard. :army7: Chris

Awsome job on the camo on the train. Love it. Great job Mark. And the best part about this build, it took you a YEAR & A HALF!!! Welcome to the the ,rest of us modelers club. HAHA :Smile-tongue: Chris -
They don't call is a Paper Panzer for nothing. Build it the way you want. Anyway you build it will be correct. A paper panzer is a design concept that was never built. I can't help you either as I can't find anything to back up what your asking. Happy building Chris

Do you remember that the studio actually took some footage from the Nats that year for the movie? Unfortunately, from what I have been told, it all ended up on the editing room floor. =(( Too bad the film editors cut that out. Just think, IPMS Nationals preserved in film forever. How cool would that have been?

If anyone has been to Walt Disney World in Florida, at the MGM studios on the back lot tour in the quell area are model ships that were in movies. I believe if memory serves me most if not all the ship models are there from the latest Pearl Harbor movie. Maybe Gil has been and seen this.
