Stikpusher Posted June 7, 2025 Report Posted June 7, 2025 So I was able to finish this up yesterday, AMT's boxing of the Otaki 70's vintage 1/48 P-51D. My original plan to use some Draw Decals markings for a Mustang features in "Empire of the Sun" was scuttled when the Draw Decals malfunctioned on me. So I used some Super Scale Decals from my stash combined with the Draw Decals personal markings. Aside from adding a decal IP and seat harness in the cockpit and replacing the kit's 1000 lb bombs with some 500 lb bombs from my spares bin, this kit was built OOB. I used primarily AK Real Colors and Tamiya lacquers for the main colors, with Humbrol and Model Master rounding out most of the rest. This was a pretty much trouble free build with only a bit of filler needed at the wing roots and on the bottom of the fuselage in the radiator area. The actual aircraft used in the movie... and my build with the mixed decals.... Thanks for looking... comments and critiques are welcome 😉 1
ghodges Posted June 8, 2025 Report Posted June 8, 2025 That Mustang was not one of Otaki's better efforts but you sure made in shine with that great NMF as well as the very attractive scheme! Congrats, and thanks for sharing!  Gil 1
PaulBradley Posted June 8, 2025 Report Posted June 8, 2025 Cool! Not the bestest of photos, but here's a couple I took of the real thing at North Weald's Fighter Meet in 1987: 1
Stikpusher Posted June 12, 2025 Author Report Posted June 12, 2025 Thanks for the kid comments guys! Gil, this is my 4th Otaki base kit that I've built so far, and Id put it as one of their better efforts, at least among those four. I have at least that many more to go in my stash, so only time will tell in the end on that. 😉 Paul, those photos are great! Thanks for them! I've seen P-51s at a few air shows, but unfortunately never got the chance to see this particular one. 2
Stikpusher Posted June 19, 2025 Author Report Posted June 19, 2025 Thans Kevin! Im happy with the final build. It's no contest model, but looks good enough on my shelf.
