  1. My latest project is AMT's Diamond REO conventional cab. Had Monograms B17 but the quality was so below par that it is sitting in time-out :(
  2. Nice build. Did you cut that door open or did it come in the kit? Sky King would be proud
  3. I thought about that but these lights are pretty small for airbrushing I think. Besides that, I am fairly new in this modeling and...I don't have an airbrush I'm still quite aways from installing them, though, so maybe I can come up with an airbrush. Need one anyway for all my models. Thanks Eric.
  4. Hey, guys. I am currently working on an AMT Ertyl Diamond REO tractor and have run into a problem. This model comes with lots of chrome. There are 5 running lights which go across the top of the cab. Now the problem--As CAREFULLY as I could, I cut them off the tree but the sides now have small areas where the chrome is gone. Does anyone make a paint that is as bright as chrome that can be brush applied ot should I just remove the rest of the chrome and paint them? I was thinking along those lines since I am thinking of painting the rig like some of the older ones--green body and black fenders--and I was thinking of black lights. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  5. I have always wanted Monograms B17 since the first time I saw it years ago. Well, I finally broke down and bought one at a bargain. The kit LOOKED fine when I first opened the box and the build started smoothly. Work on the interior went along rather smoothly and I was kinda happy and proud of the overall look. Then I started and completed the belly turret. That was fine until I fitted it in the floor. Very loose and sloppy fit. The mount on the turret needed to be thicker. I tried to take it out but one of the little hold in tabs started to break and I didn't want to risk messing it up completely so I left it in. Next was the windows. Not only were they hard to get in properly, but they were not sized correctly and some fell out when I did a test fit. There is barely enough to catch let alone glue. Everything went downhill from there. Front observation dome in front of canopy didn't fit, fuselage halves seemed to be different thicknesses, tail wheel mount and tire are one piece-no seperate wheel and tire, and other issues that have turned this into a real nightmare. This model has been sent to storage until I get up the nerve to pull it out again, cut open the fuselage and basically start over. Anyone else had this experience?? I am devestated that my dream has turned ugly.
  6. This is one nice build. If it wasn't for the box it is sitting in, you'd think it is a truck on the road. Question--the chain on the rear, did that come with the kit or did you have to rob girlfriends jewelery box? Again, this is nice.
  7. Hey, Mark thanks for the encouragement. I have already picked up quite a bit of information from this site that I am currently applying. I will say one thing, my painting of canopies and other glass frames has greatly improved almost to the point of awesome! And I have also learned that I must SLOW DOWN! I tend to get impatient and that leads to bad builds. But it IS fun. Will post some photos for, I hope, helpful critiques.
  8. 545? I've been in hobby shops that didn't have that many. And I thought my 50 kits was a lot. Good going, Duke.
  9. John, I remember this kit from my younger days. My mom ordered me one from Borax and my brother and I built it. When we were finished, we took a piece of 1x4 ( I think) painted it, added some sand and mounted the kit on it. Looked pretty neat in our little 6 year old minds. I can still picture this model. Don't know what became of it but can remember it well. Seems to me sometime in the '70s or '80s I saw a Borax box that had an offer for the model on it. Might be wrong. Would like to have another.
  10. I currently have 2 on this shelf. One is the Monogram 1:48 B17 which was a fun build on the interior, however, when it came to the windows, forget it. This is a new chinese manufactured kit and the windows don't fit. I test fitted them in the opening and they fell through. They simply weren't the right size. Because of this and a few other obstacles, I finally became frustrated and it is on the 'shelf'. Another is Revells 1:48 F4U-4 Corsair. Another chinese fiasco. Nothing fits properly and they must have run out of plastic on this one. It is really thin. May have to go to the more expensive Japanese models to get quality.
  11. I'm a new member to this stuff but thought I might have a suggestion, Bill. My wife is a avid cross stitcher and I have found that a strand of her cross stitch thread works pretty well. (don't tell her I took it though ) I used it on my Wright flyer and it looks original and is fairly easy to use. Plus DMC has about 500+ colors. I've been rather happy using guitar string for rigging 1/72 biplanes. It is nice stiff steel wire, just cut to length and super glue or epoxy into place (I prefer epoxy due to the longer working time). A superlight E string is .008" wire, and costs $2 or so, less if you buy in bulk. In scale it works out to be around 1/2" which I have been told is about right for the support wires of most biplanes.
  12. Hi guys, I'm new to this forum but thought I would add my 2 cents worth. I currently have the Monogram B29 waiting in the wings but that will be tackled after I become more experienced. Was working on the Monogram B17 but, after I joined the fuselage halves, real problems surfaced but that is another topic. The B17 went in the box and is awaiting a calmer me . Currently working on an old AMT/Ertl Diamond Reo cab which I HOPE to get to show quality. This looks like a fun build and the aircraft will have to wait
  13. I know I'm replying to an old post but I felt I needed to add my experience. Years ago I bought the Testors SR-71 and have had it in my garage, moved to shed, back to garage, finally to project table. Like I said, I have had this model for a LONG time. Opened the box and everything was there despite the condition of the box. Only problem was the decals. They were a mess and totally unuseable. I contacted Testors through their site and, in a few days, heard from Wendy. She stated she would be glad to send a set if I would send my address, which I did. Whithin a week I had a new set of decals at no charge. That is good customer service. However, Revell/Monogram wants $10.00 for a set for my equally old B58. I will look elsewhere for those.
  14. Thanks, Mark. May be a while before I am brave enough to post anything. The ones I have built are no where near the quality of the ones I have seen you guys build. They are Amazing! I may post my PBY or Stuka since they are my best but don't hold your breath. Thanks again.
  15. Hello fellow modelers! My name is jim Pedersen and I live in Garner, NC. (Home of Scotty on American Idol) I am retired and have just recently returned to modeling after an absence of oh, let's say A LONG TIME. I am one of those '50's and '60's modelers. Remember? AMT and Johan cars and a lot of ships. Back then it was buy the kit, build it and the heck with detail. I had quite a few white cars sitting around. I returned to modeling about 6 or 7 months ago after standing in my garage and looking at all the models I have taking up space. First one I grabbed was my Curtis Jenny and I was hooked. Have built 12 aircraft since then. Now, I know you'll say '12 in only 7 months?' well it wasn't until the 11th one that I found this sight and Modeling Madness and I realized I am way off base. I hope to pick up some good tips and advice and, hopefully, my models will, eventually, be show pieces. Hope to 'talk' to you guys in the future. Thanks for listening and Good Modeling.
