Jerry Taylor has passed away

Jerry Taylor has not been at the forefront of IPMS for many years, but he left a large legacy both nationally and locally.  Most of the old-timers here recognize his name.  He had many non-modeling interests and had focused on them in later life.  During the 70's through the early 90's he had a large footprint.  Jerry was RC for Region 6 for 6 years.  He was a regular national contest winner, often with a model that used the most obscure list of ingredients you could imagine.

The Dorians were an ancient ethnic group in Greece considered one of the four major groups from around 1000BC.  The galley was at the Dayton nationals in 1988.  Based upon descriptions and drawings, it started life as a PVC pipe cut lengthwise and the bow was segmented and folded into a point.  Scored and distressed, the wood grain was a combination of washes and drybrushing.  The decorative horns were formed from Sculpy putty.

The Papyrus Raft was another inspiration build.  Representing ancient boats built in Egypt, Jerry found the best way to simulate it was to take the bristles from an O-Cedar broom and bind them together in the same way they would have been done back then. Jerry won a first in scratchbuilt ships and the IPMS Mexico award at the Nationals in Miami in 1990.

Jerry scratchbuilt his Bushnell’s Turtle for the Omaha nats in 1994.  He started with a Leggs pantyhose egg for the basic shape and driving the scale of the model.  Again, scoring the plastic and paints and washes got the wood effect.  Oh, the screws?  They’re plastic rod and spiral macaroni!

There are many other 'normal' models.  These are just the ones I could find pictures of.

Most importantly, Jerry would share with anyone.  He would take any new modeler under his wing and help with suggestions and advice.  I probably wouldn't be as good as I am without his help and there are many that will say the same.  RIP Jerry.

Although I never had the privilege to call Jerry a friend, I do recognize those models from those Nats so long ago, and can appreciate his dedication to IPMSUSA and his fellow modelers. I pray the Lord buoys his family and friends with their lifetime of loving memories to get them through this time of loss.

While I did not know that man, I sure like seeing the pictures of his creations! Good to see that he and his works are being fondly remembered by his peers!

What an incredible talent! I never knew him either but I offer prayers and condolences to his family.
