  1. As has been the custom for a few years now is that the GK guys who release their various kits takes one or more of their offerings and make a Christmas ornament. This year after Gillman's release of their Harry from Harry and the Hendersons bust, they released Harry as an ornament.

After priming black, I started the base coating -

Here's where I always try something - which doesn't work - and then have to backtrack. I tried a highlight to the skin that ended up being too yellow. Looking at screen grabs of Harry, he has quite a rosy complexion.
The I added a highlight to the brown fur that IMHO was too red. Time to start again.
I also wanted to start coloring in the eyes and teeth. I wanted to use V's White Gray, but being very thin, I added Iraqi Sand first.

Finally to end Part 1, I added the gray fur to age him up a little bit.
    Thanks for looking.

  2. Thanks guys!

RGronovius, there are tons of ways to get into figures. If the 1:6 resin full figures are too expensive to start there are always busts. Going simplier miniatures of the larger size - 75, 90, 120, 200mm - are available in plastic, resin, and the good old metal. They also come in just about every genre. Only thing to do is buy one and give it a shot knowing with each one you'll get better and better.

  3. My wallet was busy this month in the figures section of The Net. ;) The first is a compliment figure to my not so recent Doc Holiday - the just released Wyatt Earp (1:9 scale). Then I go back into the horror world with the aquatic "Deep One" (1:12). Then I headed over to the shoot-em-up section and picked up a 1/4 (?) full figure of The Rock. Then a u-turn back to horror (or is this one history?) with The Birth of Dracula (1:24) where Vlad is mourning the loss of his Elisabeta. I lucked out of this one. They are limiting the model to 75 castings, and I got 70/75. So if anyone's interested there may be a chance to get one of the last ones.

    Thanks for looking.

  4. At the local closeout store, a large 17" 1/30th scale X-Wing fighter for a whopping $29.99.

Very cool score. A lot of "modelers" think these as toys, but a little extra care, and a new paint-job, they turn out to be very nice models. If you need any inspiration go to You Tube and do a search for "Bashing Kits". He goes way over the top, but creates results that are prolly better than what we seen in the movies. I really like watching this guys work.

  5. Cool looking kit, Kev!

What is the skull symbol on the base signify, anything significant?

    Bill

    Thanks.

LOL I was about to say I don't know, but I looked up the Kickstarter where I got it. The skull is part of the logo for Mystical Model Miniatures the producers.

  6. My norm is to do two kits at a time so that I can keep moving on another when one is drying. This time I have Fredric March as Mr, Hyde. For those who haven't seen this in a while. His appearance changes for the worse each time he changes. At the end, he's almost completely animal. To fill a little void on the base, I took a tiny bottle and filled it with Vallejo's Yellow Green. Swirled it around and then made it looked tipped over. I put a few more drops of the paint of the block base and gave the illusion it's spilled during the transformation.

The other is everyone's favorite Bio- exorcist - Beetlejuice! The odd thing with this one was the colors seen on the screen are different that the ones you see in the behind the scene pics. So in many aspects I just split the difference. The other hard part was I found very few (only 1) image of the Hawaiian shirt where you can tell what the design was... The kit also comes with a resin copy of The Book for the Recently Deceased, and the Beetlejuice flyer. There's no real spot for them on the base, so they are just extra props.

    Thanks for looking -

  7. Nice job on the kit. I built it back in the 90s when it was first reissued by Glencoe. I think the instructions and box art don't match because they are for the original kit, Disney's RM-1 Lunar Reconnaissance Craft by Strombecker. http://fantastic-plastic.com/RM-1%20MOON%20ROCKET%20PAGE.htm

I never realized this until I bought a Disney DVD box set of their Tomorrowland TV shows a dozen years ago and saw this spaceship in the movie. It flies from the yellow space station to the moon, the top observation bubble was used by a crewman to film the moon surface as it orbits and returns to the space station. The funky nose bulb houses the nuclear reactor power source for the ship.

The show is a yawner and tough to get through since it is so outdated.

This youtube video talks about the spaceship and the "bottle suit" tucked into the bottom of the ship around the 30 minute mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZImSTxbglI

Do not watch while operating heavy equipment.

    Thanks.

Showing the model pics on another forum, I was shown a YT link to the 2nd part of the show (I think they broke it down to 3 parts). Agreed, compared to today it was a bit on the dry side, but for being done in the 50s (?) it's comparable. On the bottom of the model the bottle suit is there and came with a figure and the glass top. The figure included prolly was 1;48 scale, which really makes the bottle suit too big for the "scale" of the craft.

Not seeing this show before, I was also surprised the bubble was used for filming. I was also surprised the cylinders were able to be ejected.

  8. I got this from a Kickstarter campaign that offered a number of small busts of the classic monsters.
In KS I chose the wolfman (can never have too many werewolves) and a Mr. Hyde. The wolfman looks to be a take off of the Oliver Reed wolfman.

After a wash, the wolfman got a once over looking for seams. Then he got a primer coat and then a base coat in a dark brown.

    miniwolf.jpg

The painting went so smoothly that I didn't think to stop and take pics along the way. So here's the finished mode. Thanks for looking.

  9. Hey Guys,

This time I went old school and built the old Glncoe Retriever Rocket kit. Besides one broken ring the kit was pretty straight fwd.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the kit is that the large "flight deck" windows reveal ... nothing when you look in. So I had two choices, to create a flight deck or to darken the windows so you can't see in.

I chose the former and started my search for parts to fill the void. The model box says the kit is 1/72 so I got my casts of a 1/72 pilot and created a few more. My craft will have 3 in there. I also found 3 seats on Megahobby. Looking for 1/72 instruments to busy up the area, I came up empty, so I did the next best thing in getting PE instruments in 1/48.

    005.JPG

The windows are thick plastic, so I painted the inside frames black and stuck the PE to the frames

    008.jpg

Except for the port hole windows - one was eaten my the carpet monster- the build went along well. I used Microscale Kristal Klear to all the portholes so they all matched.

I wonder why the paint on the boxart doesn't match the instructions? Hmmm.
Anyway here it is. Thanks for looking.

  10. Hi,

Sorry. At certain times it's hot or cold with some of these topics, so I don't check as often as I should.

IMHO detail of the suit depends on scale. Where there's a bit of wiggle room if your doing a 1/48 scale Leonov VS. a 1/6th.

However a while back New Ware did a kit of the "First Spacewalkers." For the Leonov part of kit (Ed White was the other part) you had to provide your own "hoses" by the different diameter bits of wire. The instructions are fairly clear on where the hoses go -

    Leonov.jpg

I wasn't sure how large an image was allowed here. So I put the thumbnail. If you want to go to my blog, and click the picture, there's a larger size for you to see -

  11. Thanks guys. Yes, it is a pretty well done sculpt. There was just one spot where the guys fingerprints were in the clay, and then in the resin cast. But all in all it was pretty neat.

Yeah, if I was into cars, I would definitely have his dragster. :)

  12. Grandpa was gotten from a seller on eBay. I actually bought his Zombo kit. I guess Grandpa wasn't selling or whatever, anyway he was added to the box. The "kit" was only 1 piece. There was no scale listed, but the model is 4.5" tall, and looking it up, Al Lewis was 6ft. That makes it a 1/16 scale kit.

The base of his dungeon are wood stirrers covering some foam, and the back wall is Free form Air epoxy (jury is still out if I like this stuff or not) over foam. Two pieces of scale model "lumber" was used for the beams. I sculpted a little bat and glue it on to the beam.

Thanks for looking and CCs welcomed.

  13. I was in the need to do something a little quicker than the standard resin kits. So I pulled out Moebius' styrene kit of Kogar.
The kit comes in a tan styrene, and gives you an option for 3 heads. One is to use the gorilla head for Kogar himself. The second is a likeness of Bob Burns, who is an avid Hollywood memorabilia collector and the man in the gorilla suit. The third is another gorilla head (named Tracy) , but it is made to have a propeller beanie on as seen in the live action TV series of Ghostbusters.

I found a pic online that shows him without the mask and he has the black around the eyes and a hood. So I added the black eyes, but didn't want him to have the hood on - I thought it made the whole thing too dark- but it would solve the nasty seam across the head.

    Bobs%2Bgorilla%2Bfile%2B1%2B024.jpg

I drilled out the eyes to make the head more of a mask.

I made a hood out of Aves, and just draped it around his neck, and painted it black. I added a little dark brown to the fur to give some color, and then sprayed with a matte coat, I painted around the eyes, mouth, hands, feet and chest a satin to match what I saw in the image. I was calling this done.
