WOW!! Nice collection and those F-110s are stunning!! Well done!!
-
Great work!! They all turned out very nice. The gliders are unique as I don't see many of them built. Great job!!
-
Yes indeed. The British Airborne had the Glider Pilots Regiment as supplemental forces during their operations. With US glider pilots, I’ve seen photos of them making their ways to Utah Beach in dribs and drabs for return to England. But I’ve never read or seen anything on their evacuations in Anvil/Dragoon, Market Garden, or Varsity. The latter two would have been especially challenging since the battlefield conditions were even less conducive to getting them to the rear compared to the D-Day landings.
-
Trivial fact about glider pilots. The British pilots were trained as infantrymen and were expected to join and fight with the infantry they were bringing in. The American pilots, however, were considered "speciaiist" and after landing were expected to make their own way back to the beaches to be evacuated to England. Of course it didn't quite work out that way for them what with the Germans objecting to the whole affair.
-
Well here’s a nice way to close out on this project. Last night at Phoenix IPMS in our monthly contest, this build took 3rd place.
-
Which is kind of ironic, as the greatest single success obtained by the Airborne forces in Normandy on D-Day was the glider assault that seized the Orne River and Caen Canal Bridges in the opening minutes of the invasion.

Here it is finally finished, my build of the Academy M3A1 Stuart Light Tank, in the markings of the USMC 3rd Tank Battalion on Bougainville in late 1943. The kit comes with a fairly comprehensive interior, but I added some missing details in there, as well as some on the external extra fuel tanks and some reinforcement iron bars on the rear fenders that photos showed. I replaced the kit headlight brush guards with some 3D printed ones and an engine exhaust screen that I printed up from files that I bought off of Cults3D. Paints are primarily AK Real Colors, along with AK, Vallejo, and Humbrol acrylics. I used the kit decals, and surprisingly they did not cause any problems as Academy decals often are reputed to do. And just for some size comparisons, this thing is pretty small… Bigger than a jeep Much smaller than an Easy 8 Sherman and pretty close in size to WC-51 3/4 ton truck… Thanks for looking, comments and critiques are welcome…

Excellent quartet! The glider troops of D-Day are often forgotten about with all the glory going to the paratroopers. Your 'copters remind me I need to build a couple more rotary wing subjects, if I can get past my fear of all that glass. Thanks for posting! Gil

The Duke's Newest Helicopters and Gliders
Mark Deliduka replied to Mark Deliduka's topic in Aircraft
Thank you Carlos! Yeah, I should get a picture of all four of my gliders all together soon. -
Thank you Carlos! Yeah, I'm going back to ships for now, although every now and then I'll be pulling out components of the An-225 to work on too...

In September 2022, in a surprise move, the Japanese Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) revealed a new special markings scheme for one of its aggressor F-15J Eagles of the 306 Hikotai based at Komatsu AB. In conjunction with Paramount Pictures as publicity for the then-new Top Gun: Maverick movie, the service had painted up one of their Eagles as Top Gun instructor ‘Maverick’ Mitchell’s personal F/A-18E, specially for a forthcoming Air Festival at the airbase. A bit of a non-sequitur, but it looks good! View the full review

This book contains 84 pages, 150 b/w photos, 3 color photos, 12 color profiles, 2 B/W maps, and 5 tables. It covers the war between Hungary and Slovakia in 1939. Like WWII, which would begin 162 days later, the origins of this conflict could also trace its beginnings back to WWI and the Treaty of Versailles and specifically the Treaty of Trianon. Hungary wanted to recover territory it had to give up as per the treaty, especially that in Sub-Carpathia. With Germany having seized Czechoslovakia and created the new nation of Slovakia, this seemed the right time to Hungarian officials. The war lasted approximately 12 days which in the end saw Slovakia cede roughly 655 square miles of territory back to Hungary. View the full review

Nice work on this beast Mark! He’s, it’s time for you to do a refresher kit to recharge the mojo. Something that makes the tough build fade from recent memory.
-
Nicely done Mark! Of course I’m a sucker for any Airborne related subjects, so I’m quite partial to the gliders… 😏

The right front fender is supposed to replicate the cargo bed tarp rolled up and stowed. I used Milliput rolled flat and then rolled to shape like I saw Steve Munsel from Value Gear demonstrate at one of our AMPS meetings here. I see what you mean on the rear corners. I’ll have to pay better attention to that area on the other one of these in my stash when I get around to building it.
