So here is my completed Otaki Arii 1/48 Ki-43 Hayabusa, first released in 1972. I added details into the cockpit, main wheels, wheel wells, and oil cooler, as well as replacing the single piece kit canopy with a vacuform canopy by Falcon. Paints are Tamiya lacquer and Gunze Aqueous. Decals are from Aeromaster for a Ki-43 II of the 77th Hiko Sentai, 2nd Chutai in Hollandia New Guinea, January-April 1944 flown by a Capt. Matsuo. Externally the kit is pretty nice, but all the areas that I mentioned above need help.

That mottled camo job rocks! It may be an older kit but with the skills you applied most people are going to assume it's a more modern release. Outstanding Oscar!

Thanks Gil! Thank goodness for the double action airbrush on these field applied mottle schemes. These old Otaki/Arii kits are the perfect canvas for trying out new techniques or old fashioned scratch work on. Add a bit of AM plus some "Hmmmm, I could do this to that..." to these bargain priced kits and you have a fine looking build. Otaki was way ahead of their time (1972) with recessed exterior detail like here.

I just pulled this kit out of the stash and started building it. Your canopy looks great! Is that the kit canopy, and if so what did you do to get such great clarity and shine? Mine looks pretty dingy.

Thanks Gil. No, it is not the kit canopy on this build. I used a vacuform replacement canopy for a Falcon IJAAF set…. dipped in Future of course. I improved the cockpit a bit and after looking at the kit canopy, and seeing the same things that you did in the part, I decided to replace it.
