tom Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 I was decaling a Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk. Vb and one of the decals got screwed up a bit. How do I remove it without having to sand it of and go through all the trouble again of painting and masking to camouflage and again putting on Future. i have tried to loosen with decal solvent Micro Set, didn't work. Someone suggested using Windex Window cleaner with ammonia, again didn't work. At the moment sanding seems to be the only option. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Tom
David M. Knights Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 Just use a tacky tape. Yep, works every time.
JimFox Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 I just took some decals off some corrugated wings......had to run my fingernail over the tape to make the tape contact the stuff in the bottom valleys of the corrugation.......but it worked well.
Keith Pruitt Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 Just use a tacky tape. I have used that trick several times...along with language that would make a sailor blush!!!
tom Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it a try and let you know how well it worked.
tom Posted July 26, 2008 Author Report Posted July 26, 2008 I tried the tacky tape. It took off about 95% of the decal. It still left some small pieces which I will probably have to sand off.
Chris Mobley Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 I have a Blue Angels plane of some sort that is great proof of the tape trick. Masked right over them with out thinking. Thought a bunch of things when I pulled it off.
JimFox Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 I tried the tacky tape. It took off about 95% of the decal. It still left some small pieces which I will probably have to sand off. Sometimes you have to attack it several times.
tom Posted July 26, 2008 Author Report Posted July 26, 2008 I did it several times. Even with different tape. I even tried duct tape and couldn't get all of it.
airjac Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 I've been successful using Micro-Sol. I keep brushing the Micro-Sol on the decal so it remains wet and with a little patience it breaks up completely without harming the underlying paint.
kpatterson Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 Do you have any micromesh sanding pads or something equivalent? If so, try wet sanding with the 4000 grit one. This way you run less risk of removing paint. Ken
tom Posted September 30, 2008 Author Report Posted September 30, 2008 I ended up sanding the remaining decal off with fine sandpaper. I am now in the process of touching up with paint.
