Zglossip Posted June 9, 2014 Report Posted June 9, 2014 Hey guys I am getting ready to build a f4u-1 corsair and the paint guide only comes with the Korean war paint guide if someone could tell me what paint was used on the ww11 variant any help would be appreciated.
ghodges Posted June 9, 2014 Report Posted June 9, 2014 Well, what scheme do you want to do? All Gloss Sea Blue, or the "tri-color" scheme of GSB on top, Medium Blue on the sides, and flat white on the undersides, or the very early scheme of blue-gray topsides and light gray on the bottom? Model Master makes all of those WWII colors in enamel and acrylic. I believe they're also available from other paint lines like Tamiya. GIL
Zglossip Posted June 9, 2014 Author Report Posted June 9, 2014 What ever the marines used in the Pacific theatre in 1943. Pictures would also help with the weathering pattern .
ghodges Posted June 10, 2014 Report Posted June 10, 2014 Sounds like the 3 tone scheme, which was commonly used by the Marines in '43. Google search things like "Marine Corsairs 1943", or Guadalcanal Corsairs, or Solomon Islands Corsairs and you should find plenty of pictures. You can also Googly "Pappy Boyington", the hgiest scoring Marine ace who flew Corsairs at that time. As for books, the Sq. Sig. book "F-4U Corsair in Action" will have lots of pictures as well as color drawings. Another Sq. Sig. book on the Corsair is from their "Fighting Colors" series of books (one of my favorites), but it's much harder to find. In the mean time, here's a pic of one I built years back which sports a typical paint job and weathering.... This is the Tamiya 1/48 scale kit, OOTB using the kit decals. Hope this helps! GIL 1

Zglossip Posted June 10, 2014 Author Report Posted June 10, 2014 One question what does gsb stand for
David M. Knights Posted June 11, 2014 Report Posted June 11, 2014 One question what does gsb stand for Gloss Sea Blue. It is a dark gloss blue used on late war navy aircraft.
