For the fifth week of the F-35C I worked on the main gear bays and struts. I used the reference photos to add all the lines to the struts. I used different size wire and some scrap photo etch parts. I also added the tie down loop to strut as well. I then used a reference photo to create the placards for the struts. Next I came across an issue. The directions show assembling the main gear and then installing them in to the lower fuselage assembly. The issue is once the wheels are attached you are unable to install them as the wheels and struts together are too wide to fit thru the gear openings. One of the bays I did not install the wheel yet but I did have to remove the other wheel to install it. I ended up pinning this wheel onto the strut. I then went to make sure the landing gear sat correctly and found out the tail hook was too low. I cut the control strut for the tail hook to raise it up a bit. Now all the landing gear and tail hook sit evenly in the ground. Another issue is the instructions have you install the cockpit assembly on to the topside of the nose gear bay. However during a dry-fit check there are no markings as to the exact location to mount it. I decided to mount the cockpit on the upper fuselage instead. I taped it the cockpit assembly in place on the upper fuselage and did another dry fit check. This will work a lot better for the correct alignment. I am now working on the upper fuselage details starting with the refueling probe and upper intake panels. I am hoping to get the fuselage together next week. Here's an update on progress. Just to show the difference in scale I took a photo of the 1/25 scale 3D printed D-7 along with this build and a SpecCast IH TD-24 in 1/50 scale. Quite a difference! The current build will take on some heft once the top cover, radiator shroud and blade are attached.

A brief update for the record: Researching other info, I discovered that the P-38E that Laven flew in Alaska is shown in the records having been destroyed in a crash in Washington State (before he flew it!??) in 1942, very strange. However, a few months after posting this "article" about Laven, I got in touch with Laven's brother's son, Laven's nephew, who told me a couple of interesting stories that were in the "family lore" about Laven. The first item is that he was said to have destroyed a Japanese mini submarine in Puget Sound (Washington State), PRIOR TO THE PEARL HARBOR ATTACK on Dec 7, but that this was covered up by the U.S. Gov't so as "not to frighten" the public... Or, could there have been a "cover-up" at work, which may account for his P-38E being "destroyed, before he later was known to have flown it! Secondly, his family tells the story that when Laven was in Israel, working for McDonnel-Douglas, we was flying one days with Israelis and they were jumped by MIGS from some surrounding country, and Laven scored an air-to-air kill. This too was quickly covered up, as civilians were not supposed to fly in combat. (Charles Lindberg anybody...?). Alas Laven's logbuck has apparently disappeared from the family, so the absolute truth might never be known. Still, what a hell of a guy! Ed

It was used as a night fighter, fighter-bomber, bomber, reconnaissance, anti-ship or special transport aircraft. The first generation of Mosquitos was powered by Merlin engines with single-stage superchargers. In the spring of 1943, two-stage Merlins with higher performance at higher altitudes were installed in the Mosquito. This resulted in the PR Mk.IX reconnaissance version and the B Mk.IX bomber. They were produced in limited numbers, as they were replaced in production by the mass-produced PR Mk.XVI and B Mk.XVI versions, equipped with a pressurized cockpit. These four I just got done with two days ago; two helicopters and two gliders from WWII D-Day invasion. First is the USAAF Waco glider by Italeri: Next is the British Horsa Glider by Italeri: Next are the two helicopters, starting with this Italian Chinook by Revell: Finally the last one is the Israeli CH-53 by Italeri: And that's all for now. Finally after a long hard fight I managed to complete this Vespid Models Buffalo A2 MPCV which stands for "Mine Protected Clearance Vehicle". It is not complete as at least a third of the parts for the robot arm are missing due to breakage and just general flipping into Oblivion. I got to built with the remaining parts and it is done! I made this one a Marine Corps Vehicle: Now I can breathe again and work on something a bit less annoying and frustrating! Thank you all for looking in, comments are welcome.
