VonL Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 (edited) Outstanding - You guys rock! Will there be a 'Support The Troops' donation station at the Nats? Edited April 1, 2011 by VonL
Dick Montgomery Posted April 2, 2011 Author Report Posted April 2, 2011 I can ask the Convention Director for permission to set up a donation station.....but they may already have that built into their plans.
Dick Montgomery Posted April 2, 2011 Author Report Posted April 2, 2011 The Omaha convention team has enthusiastically accepted the idea for a Donation Station at the convention. We will set up the Station at the IPMS table, which is manned throughout the convention by the National Office Manager and various IPMS officers. For those wishing to be recognized as a donor please leave a name and mailing address at the station when dropping off the goodies. The facility which receives the donations sends a certificate to the donor and needs that info. Anonomous donations are also gladly accepted. The Wounded Warriors can use any hobby-related item including books, decals, paints and paint brushes, glue, tools, aftermarket parts (matched up with the kit and included in the box is the best way to offer these small extra items) and, of course, lots of models. Look for the IPMS table and the Donation Station in the convention registration area. Thanks to Bob for the idea and the encouragement and thanks to the Omaha guys for the support!
Dick Montgomery Posted April 13, 2011 Author Report Posted April 13, 2011 Roy Sorenson (Yes...That Roy Sorenson of MODEL CAR BUILDER magazine) saw a story in the San Diego Model Car Club newsletter about the IPMS Support the Troops program, and specifically about the IPMS Wounded Warrior group at Brooke Army Med. Center in San Antonio, Tx. Roy contacted me and asked how to go about collecting some models and making a donation. A donation station was set up at the recent NNL West show and Roy put those items in the mail. Today, 3 boxes containing 22 models arrived and the Troops will have them to build and enjoy within the week. Thanks to the San Diego guys for mentioning the program in their newsletter, thanks to Roy for collecting and shipping the kits, and thanks to the individuals who placed the items in the box at the donation station. NNL West is to be congratulated for supporting our Wounded Warriors! Here is an image of the sign that appeared at the Donation Station. If you, your chapter, or your group of modeling buddies would like to make a contribution there are facilities state-side that will be glad to accept them. There are also servicemen and women overseas that would love to receive a model to build. Contact me ( Dick M) if you need information or help in making a contribution.
sumterIII Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 Is the POC in Iraq still good? I sent a message to him a week ago but no reply.
VonL Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 FYI - Am still plugging away at the vets' model building group at the local mission. The mission even bought some tool kits and supplies, bless them. Response from the vets has been lackluster, at best. There are a bunch of them in house, but they would much rather fossilize in the TV room, 24/7. It's sad, really. Have still got most of the original kit stash and am considering re-spotting this effort to the local air museum. Maybe that will give the guys in the farther vets' homes an excuse for a little road trip every week or two? I've heard they do have a few builders in that crowd. Maybe take the donated stuff down to the vets' home? I dunno. Suggestions appreciated.

Eric Aitala Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 I believe that info is correct... I will check. Eric For which group in Iraq? Eric SPC Perry for 'Boots on the Ground' as listed on the IPMS website
Dick Montgomery Posted May 2, 2011 Author Report Posted May 2, 2011 Thanks to IPMS Houston for their support for the Support the Troops program. IPMS Houston provided table space and advertising for the IPMS Donation Station. The participants at the event were very generous, providing approximately 80 model kits, 10 lbs of paints, glue, tools, and hobby supplies, some excellent reference books, and promises to contribute more materials in the near future. IPMS also gained five new members and two renewed memberships during the course of the day. A special Thanks goes to the sales rep for Grex, Danny, who occupied the table next to the Donation Station. Danny was helpful throughout the day. The Houston show was well attended, held in a very comfortable venue, and the model tables held some fantastic models! Thanks to the membership of IPMS Houston and to the participants who provided items to the Donation Station.
