Here is my interpretation of Young Miniatures’ 1/10 Blackfoot Raven Bearer bust as sculpted by Carl Reid. He is painted in acrylics and posed on a buckeye burl base from John Jeffries. The raven was first painted purple then given washes of black to retain some iridescence. The pictographs on the buffalo robe are patterned after some examples from my references. His face paint is based on a painting of Mehkskehme-Sukahs, a Blackfoot chief, by Karl Bodmer who travelled among the people of the northern plains in the 1830’s and did many portraits of them. I like your painting a lot, nice metals, good eyes, good highlighting on the hair and really good work on the heraldry on his chest. I'm not sold on the beard, however. The edges look a bit too groomed, more disco Beegees than someone in the field for a long time. While there are nice highlights and shading, to my eye, there should be more texture in this scale.

Check out pictures from any figure show if you can't get to one. There are basically NO figures presented without a base and doing so would pretty much keep you out of the running for a better award. If I had my druthers, IPMS would follow suit and judge the base/presentation as part of the figure judging. Much of what the comp guidebook says about figures is ignored/irrelevant. I worked closely with the line judge at the recent local regional and he asked me and my travelling buddy, both figure painters, if we wnated to judge to the CH or judge the figures as we would have in any other venue. I think we did a pretty good job on our own. As the previous poster said, the base won't rescue a poorly painted figure but may certainly enhance a well done one.

I recently scored this most cool looking kit: I guess it's supposed to be from a Japanese series. Does anyone have an idea of what the thing on the swing arm in the picture in the upper right corner is supposed to be? Also, there's a cone ended thing on the rear port side diagonally opposite the 20 mm turret. Any ideas on that? It almost looks like some sort of exhaust or stored snorkel. Any help/toughts would be appreciated

Thanks for the nice comments, gents. I delivered this this morning, along with two single figures and the guy was quite happy. I now have three more kits to do for him alng with one already commissioned.

Second time painting Seil’s 54mm Crow Warrior, this tome as a commission. The shrub under the horse is an unfortunate necessity as the rear legs are not reinforced and, as I found out on my version, will collapse under the weight of the rest of the kit in a matter of a couple months. As with my original,. I replaced the kit fringe with wine bottle foil I cut to a thinner width than the kit supplied pre-scored pieces.
