  1. Actually there is a completely different discussion on what 'Ferrari red' actually is - especially how it relates to the Formula One cars and their fluorescent and/or metallic paints. These have the added issue that they do not photograph very well depending on film/video types and ambient light conditions.

My mix for scale effect is 100% base color and 0% white.

Just how far away from an object I would have to be for the atmosphere to cause noticeable discoloration. Pretty far I think. Quarter mile? I think that distance is much further than any likely distance you are to view a model, even when adjusted for scale. Car modelers seem to get very realistic results without tinting their Duplicolor with 10% white. A dark pink Ferrari would look wrong. Why should the same not apply to military subjects?

  2. You are probably using IE6 - you might want to upgrade to IE7 since 6 is no longer supported by Microsoft or by software like the Forums and the Gallery.

    You could also try Firefox.

It seems when you click on the add image icon, the box that comes up to add the URL into is too far left and partially off screen. I tried expanding the screen to the left but that didn't work. Is this a forum problem, or is there something I can do or need to do on my computer? I finally finished a model and I can't post pics of it! Thanks!

  3. Not really. There are some technical issues which make things unduly complicated and probably not worth the effort of trying to patch up an old application. Its also a matter of timing and priorities - getting the Reviews site rebuilt was a major issue. Now that its up and running, with its underlying infrastructure, I can start building new services and moving old ones to it. We've got a couple things in the pipeline there... for example, adding the SIGs listing and the Journal Articles was just a start.

Is there an easy answer as to why the two/three sides (of our site) aren't interlinked, interlaced or whatever it's called?

  4. You mean from the main IPMS web site to the Forums? Not easily doable. It would be simpler to move the calendar to the 'Reviews' web site then have that data exported/imported into the Forum calendar via RSS. I've basically done something similar and have event info imported into F1M.com that way.

I especially like the Calendar feature. I see that several have already found it easy and useful.

Now if only all the events in the "upcoming events" page could be autolinked somehow onto the calendar. It might be easier to load them into the calendar and have that page generated as a report, I don't know.

  5. Hm... I am not seeing this. Things are pretty speedy for me.

I like the new look of the posts, but the speed that screens change when clicking a function button is S...L...O...W! It took 55 seconds from the time I clicked the Add Reply button until the progress bar at the bottom of my screen blinked out and the cursor started flashing in this message box. That is not an improvement. Clicking on a forum topic from the list takes at least 30 seconds to clear the screen and show the new posts on the topic.

  6. The style of quotes in older posts was not very clear. I've made them look more like the current quotes.

Hmmm... I wonder how I can fix that.....

quotes in previous posts don't seem to have a clear beginning and end.

Looks like you just did! The change looks GREAT!! I'm not usually for change to a website(if it's not broke, don't fix it) but this is an improvement!

  7. Hi Folks,

I plan on upgrading the Forum software to the latest version of IP Board over Thanksgiving weekend. We are a version behind and I'd like to make sure we are up to date. I will probably do the updates pretty late Friday or Saturday night - mebbe around midnight Eastern time.

    The upgrade will proceed as...

    1. Take the Forums offline
    2. Backup the database
    3. Backup the forum software and files
    4. Apply the update
    5. Update the theme with IPMS logos, etc.
    6. Test...
    7. Turn everything back on

I have tried doing the upgrade when we were testing the Forum with the new web server - it went pretty easily, so I expect no problems. If there are, I can always restore the backups.

The new version of IP Board has a different set of default themes, so things may look a little different - see http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/ for an example. I don't expect things to operate any differently however...

  8. Posting PDFs of past Journal articles goes back to a number of Forum threads about making some of that material (or entire Journals) available online to promote the quality of the Journal. We should be posting an article every once in a while, but a definite schedule is still a work in progress. It won't be as frequent as posting new reviews...

We're still working out the details, so you may see a post or two in the Forums about it..

It seems to be working good Eric. I have added one comment to get it started.

I noted that your programing did not include the article from the January 2008 Journal. I was impressed that past articles like this could be brought back from time to time. The article is really informative from the tips standpoint (at least to someone who doesn't normally build figures). I was wondering what was behind posting this article. As I said, I like the idea but was curious why it popped up.

  9. Hi Folks,

I am going to be testing a new feature here in the General Modeling area - when a new Review is published on the Reviews website, a post will be made here with a 'teaser' of the review plus a link to the full review.

There will be the occasional odd character that may show up in the text - its an issue with smart/curly quotes - but that's not a major deal.

Hopefully, folks will find it useful...

    Eric
