Rusty White Posted August 5, 2011 Report Posted August 5, 2011 Hi guys. I'm a ship builder, but I am interested in finding a Sopwith 2F.1 Camel for an upcoming project. I know there are plenty of new WW-1 A/C subjects on the market, so I am looking for the best one. I prefer 1/72 scale, but 1/48 will work too. Who makes the best kit in both scales? I'm also going to need markings for Flight Sub-Lieutenant Stuart D. Culley's plane. Anyone know where I can get them??? Thanks much.

I also have three different later reissues through 1978 of this kit. There are only 21 numbered pieces including the base. There is a pilot figure sitting in and filling up the cockpit opening, so instruments are not visible (or included). The decals in this kit are for the Capt. Roy Brown a/c. I've never built any of these kits. Is it possible to build what version you need from this kit? Ed

It requires minor adjustments to get to the "Ship" Camel in 1/72nd. I saw a build of the kit on You-Tube and with some work (due to the age of the kit), it builds into a fairly decent representation of the 2.F1. The quality of the moldings show their age though. All the parts require a lot clean up and sanding. After doing a lot searching on the web, I found there are several kits made in 1/72 and 1/48th. I have also read some reviews, but I prefer the advice of friends. I'm also going to need markings for Flight Sub-Lieutenant Stuart D. Culley's plane. Know where I can get them??? ewahl Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 The 1974 reissue--Revell kit #H-64--with three marking choices has one that may--yes, may--help. It is for Sopwith F.1 of the Royal Navy Air Service, No. 10 Squadron, "B" Flight. A comment from the instructions: "It is said that the colorful stripe marking was short lived, for immediately after higher authority saw them, the stripes were ordered removed." The stripes were red and white on the front of the a/c begining at the cowl front and ending just behind the cockpit opening. I would disagree about the quality of the parts from your assessment. There is almost no flash, no mold shift, tiny ejector pin marks, and fuselage halves that fit with almost no seam work. The wing and landing wheel struts are thin and delicate. I've seen many modern, very expensive kits kits today that have greater cleanup challenges. I can't speak for the accuracy of the shape, but the kit itself looks excellent. Rigging wires, if you add them, must come from your references; the kit does not provide that information. Ed

Now to begin construction of the lighter first.
