dmorrissette Posted April 15, 2013 Report Posted April 15, 2013 Incomplete when Union forces closed in on Memphis in May 1862, she was finished as far as circumstances allowed. On 15 July 1862, her enterprising commanding officer, took Arkansas down the Yazoo river where she encountered the U.S. gunboats Carondelet and Tyler and the ram Queen of the West, leaving the first two badly damaged. Continuing out into the Mississippi River, she boldly fought her way through the assembled Federal fleet and came to rest under the protection of the Confederate fortress at Vicksburg. While at Vicksburg on 22 July, Arkansas was attacked by the Queen of the West and ironclad Essex, but was not severely damaged. Though badly in need of repairs, she was ordered to steam down river to assist Confederate forces in an attack on Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While carrying out this mission, CSS Arkansas suffered a severe machinery breakdown during an engagement with the Essex, drifted ashore and was burned to prevent capture. This is a 1/192 scale (1/16"= 1'- 0") model kit of the Flagship Models CSS Arkansas ironclad ram. The model is a kit with cast resin, photo etch, brass rod, flag decal, computer illustrated instructions and color box art and is complete with everything needed to build a faithful replica of the Arkansas. At 1/192 scale, she is big enough (10.5" long) to display and super detail. State of the art casting techniques bring out every detail from her accurate steering mechanism, to her strap iron armor. The model was designed using drawings supplied by the Confederate Naval Museum culminating in a dead on accurate model of this influential ironclad. The kit sells for $90.00 plus S&H.
