I need something to help seriously loosen/debond CA glue on a styrene kit. I don't care if it removes all the paint as it's getting a new coat, anyway. A google search reveals that some have used brake fluid or Pinesol, but no one seems to have a clear consensus on if these chemicals damage kits. The kit in question is a Trumpy 1/700 South Dakota, and I'd rather not lose detail. I guess, worst care, I can take a razor blade to the ship, but I'd rather not risk more damage than necessary. Help would be appeciated.
sumterIII Posted January 28, 2013 Report Posted January 28, 2013 Chris I use Bondini Super Glue Remover Gel. I like that over the other home remedy methods. For one you can place just what you need in the area needed and not waste any. And the price is low. True Value list for under $3.00. Only caution I found, don't use it on resin. It will melt resin as well as the super glue. Application is simple. Apply to part; let it sit for a few minutes then rinse with clean water. You may need more than one application depending on how much super glue is on the part. I messed up some 1/700 rails one time with a fat glob of super glue. I used the remover with a small brush (never to be use again) and after three washes it was good as new.

Mark Deliduka Posted January 28, 2013 Report Posted January 28, 2013 Many Hobby Shops sell a CA Debonder which should work also. It is a bit more expensive than the Bondini Super Glue Remover Gel, but it's a good thing to have in the tool box. I had a friend who tried to strip paint off a car model with brake fluid and it softened the plastic causing the body to warp. Scratch one car kit! My recommendation is to stay away from brake fluid period.
sumterIII Posted January 28, 2013 Report Posted January 28, 2013 I used brake fluid to strip chrome off an old 1960's Palmer kit. After the chrome fell off I soaked and washed it in warm soapy water. The plastic was easy to scratch but held up okay in the brake fluid. But that was old school plastic and may have been better than todays stuff.

I paid 60+ for this SoDak build back sometime last year when I had NO idea what I was doing and don't want to waste the cash. Plus, finishing her will give me one example of the modern US BBs.
