The CSS Jackson was affectionately known as the LAST Confederate ironclad. She was probably the most advanced and powerful Confederate ironclad ever. When Union forces attacked Columbus, the citizenry took it upon themselves to burn and scuttle the massive ironclad fearing it would fall into enemy hands. Jackson was only days away from completion. Loss of the Jackson was a huge blow to the Confederacy with the time and resources expended to build her only to have her scuttled.
