  1. The most frequent request lately has been to "fix" member accounts where all the forum topics are not visible and/or the member can't reply to an otherwise open thread. The solution for many is simple: delete the "cookies" for this website. That's easy to do. Simply go to the forum index page and, near the bottom, you'll find a link to delete the cookies for the website. Do this, log out, shut down your browser and then restart the browser and go to the IPMS/USA discussion forums again.

If that doesn't work, we go to step two: forum_admin@ipmsusa.org

    Happy trails!

  2. With amendment voting going "live" on the IPMS/USA website soon, I've created a forum for discussing the six amendments up for a vote. To make it easier for members to track these discussions, I've created a separate thread for all six amendments on this new forum. No new threads can be created, so all discussion will have to stay within those threads. Think of it as six separate mini-forums.

These threads will stay active till midnight Sept. 1, 2010 when they'll become a read-only archive for two weeks, then they'll go away.

  3. Good news Dennis.

By the way, have we advertised the fact at other forums?

We're trying not to spam other forums with this and are keeping a list of the places we've posted this info so that we don't duplicate. If you want to post something on a modeling forum you frequent, I can send you a copy of my announcement to post...or you can send me the URL and I'll go post it...if I'm a member.

  4. I like this decision as long as non members can't see all the bickering that goes on in the Business section.

The forums are now set up in such a way that the IPMS/USA business is separated from the modeling forums. Non-IPMS/USA members can only see the modeling forums. The moderators have been tasked with making sure that the inevitable intra- IPMS/USA bickering happens only within the IPMS/USA sections.

  5. I'm pleased to announce that, effective today, the model building discussion forums of the IPMS/USA are now open to non-IPMS/USA members. No longer closed to the world, we welcome modelers to our forums and hope to share our passion for model building with them. Anyone who provides a valid e-mail address can join and use our modeling forums to share info, ask questions, post photos and learn more about the IPMS/USA.

We hope that opening the modeling forums will encourage non-members to join and give IPMS/USA members a chance to share their knowledge, experience and passion for our hobby with others.

    Welcome!

  6. If you have a question about the IPMS/USA Discussion Forum, try using the built-in Help System (Link at top right corner of every page) to find features and answers to common questions. If you still need assistance, feel free to post your questions here but post your questions only after trying the Help System. (Frequently Asked Questions). Thanks!

  7. Just wanted to share with everyone that we've had a dozen or so new registrations today. About half were from IPMS/USA members.

I normally receive one every other day.

Because I have to approve all IPMS/USA memberships by hand, there'll be days when I won't get around to approving new registrations for 24 or 48 hours. I have to compare the IPMS/USA member requests with my most current membership list and it's a manual process.

Just thought you needed to know,

p.s. we just went over 1000 registered forum members! woot!

In addition to making the model building forums public, a new "Ask the IPMS" forum has been set up and John Ratzenberger will be hosting it. It is meant to be the public face of the IPMS/USA and will contain useful information for members and non-members alike.

The "From the Forum Administrator" forum will also be opened for comments. IPMS/USA members can now interact with me directly about concerns related to the discussion forums. Feel free to post relevant questions about the discussion forums there also.

Finally, the former Open Discussion forum has been transformed into the new Bull Pen forum. This forum, open only to IPMS/USA members, will be a lightly-moderated forum set aside for members to discuss whatever moves them. It has its own set of rules to follow and no cross-posting or quoting from threads found within this forum will be permitted. What happens in the Bull Pen, stays in the Bull Pen. For those members who'd rather not even see this forum, I can modify their accounts to make that wish possible.

The goal of these changes is to make the IPMS/USA discussion forums more accessible to more modelers. It is hoped that their contributions to this site will transform it into something of greater value to IPMS/USA members and non-members alike.

Now that we have opened the doors, please remember that the modeling forums are for talk about models and model building. Any comments or criticism related to the IPMS/USA must be posted in the IPMS/USA Business section. I've instructed the moderators to be watching for this sort of thing and to move threads like that to an appropriate IPMS/USA Business forum as quickly as possible. The person posting such items in the public threads will be warned and suspended if the practice continues.

By and large, the model building forums have been helpful and friendly places. Now more than ever, we want that to continue to be the case. So, please support our efforts to make the model building forums a place where everyone can talk about model building, be welcomed regardless of skill level and be encouraged to come back often and contribute to the fun.

  9. In an effort to move toward growing an online community devoted to model building, I’ll be making some changes soon to emphasize modeling and consolidate or eliminate those forum topics that do not.

The most visible change will be the elimination of the “open discussion” forum, effective immediately. Topics that are related to modeling should be posted in the Model Building section. IPMS/USA topics should be posted under the IPMS/USA business section. Topics that aren’t related to model building or IPMS (i.e. pop culture, music, movies, etc...) are better located on other forums.

The Kit Review and Constitutional Amendments sections will be merged with the IPMS/USA Topics forum until they find a new home on the IPMS website that will better achieve their goal of informing the membership. The Websites & Newsletters section will also be rolled into the IPMS/USA topics forum. These three forum topics see relatively little traffic and no longer merit a separate discussion forum.

From reading emails and talking with IPMS members, I get the clear impression that members want to see more modeling discussed here and less nonsense. If you want to start a discussion about something other than modeling or the IPMS, please take it to another, non-IPMS forum. If you want to talk about modeling and your latest build, we want to hear more!
