Great Britain was one major recipient of Shermans (17,184 vehicles in total), and Dragon’s latest release depicts one such vehicle. Kit No. 6573 is a Sherman III Early-Production vehicle, the British nomenclature ‘III’ referring to an M4A2. The British operated more than 5,000 of these diesel-powered Sherman III tanks with 75mm guns during WWII, making it the second-most common Sherman variant in British service. Many fought in North Africa and Italy , for example. This kit has Direct Vision (DV) slots for the driver and co-driver in the glacis plate, with this feature being a forerunner to vehicles equipped with periscope vision devices. Building on the success of earlier Dragon Sherman IIIs, this latest kit has received newly tooled parts where appropriate for a DV Early-Production vehicle. For easy assembly, the upper hull and lower hull are both created as one-piece components thanks to sophisticated slide molds. The plastic turret has received a finely textured surface that beautifully renders the original cast pattern. Two types of transmission cover are provided, which will allow modelers to replicate a specific tank. The highly accurate kit benefits from multimedia materials too, to upgrade particular details - for example, photo-etched parts and DS tracks. Naturally, high-quality Cartograf decals provide markings for a range of British tanks. This tank is a very useful addition to the Sherman kit family, and it will definitely please Shermanaholics…as well as everyone else too! However, as its name suggests, it was based on the hull of the Panzer IV tank rather than the Panzer III. This came about because Alkett (a manufacturer of the StuG.III) was bombed in November 1943. Therefore, in an effort to increase assault gun production numbers, Krupp installed slightly modified StuG.III superstructures on the chassis of the Panzer IV. Krupp built 1,108 StuG.IV vehicles between December 1943 and May 1945. While this number was far less than the StuG.III, Krupp did help ensure continuity of assault gun production. Crewed by four men, the StuG.IV armed with a capable 7.5cm StuK40 L/48 gun proved an effective tank hunter. Dragon has already introduced 1/35 scale Smart Kits depicting Early-Production variants of the StuG.IV tank destroyer, as well as a Late-Production variant in the past. This left just one gap in Dragon’s coverage and that was the Mid-Production type. That gap has been filled, however! This new Mid-Production version is accurately tooled and detailed with correct characteristics such as a rain gutter on the sloping casemate, a redesigned driver’s hatch, and a remote-controlled MG34 on the roof. Where appropriate, the kit borrows various high-quality parts from previous Panzer III and IV releases. As to be expected, the box includes convenient Magic Tracks, separate metal armor skirt plates and high-quality Cartograf decals. This fine kit completes the StuG.IV happy family! AVAILABLE: December 2012 $52.95 DRA7134 1/700 German Z-38 Destroyer - Smart Kit Barcode: 0 89195 87134 3 Case Pack: 24 Pieces per case Box Size: 7.5" x 11.4" x 1.8" Germany produced a total of 15 Zerstörer 1936A-class destroyers, which the Allies referred to as the Narvik class. They were actually closer in size to a light cruiser than a destroyer, and they were known only by their hull numbers and didn’t receive any name. They sported powerful 5.9-inch guns, with the last three destroyers constructed by F. Krupp Germaniawerft AG in Kiel . Z38 was the penultimate destroyer of the class after being commissioned on 20 March 1943. One of its first combat missions was to escort the Scharnhorst battleship, and near the end of the war it operated in the Baltic Sea as German forces retreated. Z38 had a combat displacement of 3,691 tons and required a crew of 330 sailors. After WWII it was seized by the UK and used as a test ship under the name Nonsuch before being scrapped in 1950. Dragon has earlier offered 1/700 scale kits of the Z31 and Z39 destroyers, and they’re now being joined by their sister Z38. This new kit comes the accurate bridge and aft platform of Z-38. As with Dragon’s earlier destroyers, this kit is produced with the highest levels of engineering and molding excellence. The destroyer can be assembled as a full-hull or waterline-hull kit, while a comprehensive selection of photo-etched parts are available to upgrade the sophisticated plastic components. This is a stunning kit, and when the Z31, Z38 and Z39 trio is alongside, they allow modelers to discern the development process of this important class of Kriegsmarine warship. AVAILABLE: December 2012 $26.95 DRA7493 1/72 VK.45.02(P)H Barcode: 0 89195 87493 1 Case pack: 48 Pieces per carton Box Size: 6.4" x 10.2" x 1.9" Dragon previously released a mightily impressive 1/35 scale kit of the VK.45.02(P)H prototype, which had the Krupp turret mounted well to the rear of the hull. This configuration produced a most unique profile for the heavy tank. Now the same vehicle is available in 1/72 scale! The one-piece upper hull is a brand new molding. The unique deck layout includes accurate details. The hull also carries the Porsche turret later assigned to the Tiger II. There are also easy-to-assemble DS tracks. The “H” version of this Porsche prototype offers modelers something new to turn their creative talents to. AVAILABLE: December 2012 $22.95 Dragon Armor Ready Made Collectables DRR60594 1/72 Flakpanzer 341 mit 2cm Flakvierling, Nuremberg 1945 - Ultimate Armor Ultimate Armor series is a new line-up of Dragon Armor, featuring unusual and rare vehicle types such as the Flakpanzer 341 presented here. These unique items will cater to the demands of discerning collectors. Many such rare fighting-vehicles will be coming up soon. Stay tuned! Barcode: 0 89195 60594 8 Case Pack: 24 pieces per carton Box Size: 7.2" x 3.1" x 3.7" At the start of WWII, the Luftwaffe ruled the skies, but this dominance was gradually overturned as the war progressed. This led to a dire need for more antiaircraft vehicles for ground forces, and early efforts at producing a Flakpanzer centered on the Panzer IV chassis. However, the famous German Panther medium tank was also used as a platform for developmental work, with the Coelian perhaps being the best-known example. In May 1943, a proposed Rheinmetall design showed two pairs of Vierling MG151/20 antiaircraft cannons mounted in a Turm Panther II. This turret was heavily armored and it featured the pairs of cannons offset from each other and mounted at different heights. This early Flakpanzer design never advanced much further…except in terms of Dragon Armor’s superb new 1/72 scale model that shows it in fully finished form and with an intriguing camouflage scheme!
