Coastal Command was established in 1936 as the Royal Air Force’s naval aviation arm. Once WWII broke out, the unit’s primary role was to protect convoys from attacks by German U-boats. Pilots would often equip their B-24 Liberators with ASV radar and Leigh lights to hunt U-boats in all weather conditions.
