An Adult Build Course for Wounded Warriors

Dick Montgomery

I feel vindicated! One of the Warriors is using the Testor's orange tube glue! YES! That's what I primarily build with myself.

Great to see these guys doing so well. I enjoy seeing this thread updated. Thanks for posting.

The package is shipped via parcel post. Look for it in about a week. Did I mention that the locomotive and tender must be coupled in order for the electrical connections to work? Without the tender, the locomotive is dead weight.

The Testors glue was part of a donation made by Chuck Adams of CM Toys. Chuck has been a rather prolific donor.

When the HO equipment arrives I'll try to get a pic of it on the layout.

The 2nd February ABC session with the Warriors took place on the 22nd. John Dinsmore (Co-Coach for the ABC session) and I delivered donations collected during the IPMS Alamo Squadron event held on the 18th. Also, we had some donated items received through the mail that was also delivered to the Center.

The event hosted by Alamo Squadron is a very large show at which a very large number of visitors attend, and consequently the number of donors is high at a show of this size. Our donors include:

Mrs. Neva Pratt

James Sharp

Chris Weir

Ed Wahl

Sienna Properties of Austin, Tx

IPMS Ft. Worth

IPMS North Central Texas

IPMS Alamo Squadron

IPMS SWAMP

Gary Gerraci

Bryan Studley

Buddy Wolfe

and a large number of individuals who anonymously donated one or two items at the Donation Station throughout the day.

All of the tools, models, and hobby supplies you see in these images came from donors such as the individuals and organizations listed above. Thanks!

And now for some pictures:

We are pleased to remind the reader that IPMS SWAMP has "adopted" a Warrior in their area (southern Louisiana) and the Support The Troops program has provided some donated items to SWAMP, which they have already delivered to their adopted Warrior. IPMS encourages IPMS chapters and members to seek such opportunities in their community and to work with IPMS to set up a program similar to the one featured in these images.

If you have donations for the program, or if you have questions about how to set up a similar program please contact me via PM.

Thanks!

A recent donation received through the good offices of Ed Wahl, the Crescent Limited is now operating on the HO layout at the Family Warrior Support Center. This is the same facility in which the Adult Building Courses are held for the Wounded Warriors. Thanks Ed!

The ABC (Adult Build Curriculum) with the Wounded Warriors took place Wednesday evening. One of our "regulars" will not be back. He is being transferred to another post. Fortunately there is an IPMS chapter in that city and we'll try to establish contact between the chapter and the Warrior.

Recently donated items were distributed to the attendees and added to storage for future use. Thanks to the following for their donations:

Frederick Smith, Slot & Wings Hobby, George Davis, IPMS Brooklyn, Hugh Alcock, Paul Lemmon, Mike Ward, and Sienna Properties of Austin, Tx.

A special thanks to Gary Emery and Hill Country Hobby for strong support that HCH shows to the IPMS Support the Troops program. We distributed $50 in gift certificates last night thanks to HCH.

The IPMS "Support the Troops" program has added another Point of Contact to the short list of potential recipients of the generous donations that are being received.

IPMS Eagle Squadron (North Carolina) has a program, under the guidance of Jon Emery, and that program is now in a position to receive donations, along with the existing program managed by John Dinsmore in San Antonio, Tx. (IPMS Wounded Warriors)

Visit the IPMS Gallery at http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/ and you will find some photo albums which contain images and contact info on both of these programs.

Another bit of news.....IPMS is close to activating a Point of Contact in Afghanistan, and as soon as that PoC becomes active a notice will be posted to that effect.

Know of a local program that needs support?

Want to organize a local program?

Great News!

The IPMS Support the Troops Initiative is growing. For some time there was a single program, within the STT Initiative, that was “active and receiving” donations of kits, tools, and hobby related supplies. Thanks to a paragraph in Fine Scale Modeler, the Initiative has grown with the addition of four new programs.

Donors can review each of these programs by visiting the IPMS Gallery album which features the STT Initiative. To view this information go to http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/. Click on the “album” covers to view the information and points of contact for each program.

Your continued support for these programs is most welcomed and the recipients always ask that their appreciation for you generosity be expressed. THANKS!

IPMS El Paso generously consented to fund the shipment of some items to our troops overseas. Thanks to IPMS El Paso some items are already on their way to the Warriors who stand and serve.

You can view an "album" for each of the programs, both domestic and international, that are currently under the IPMS/USA Support the Troops umbrella. Go to http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/ and pick an "album" to view by clicking on the "album cover image". Use the Point of Contact email addy within each album to contact that PoC for a specific mailing address.

For those not familiar with shipping items APO there is a sample Customs Form that illustrates how to complete that form. Domestic shipments do not require the Customs Form. The form is available at your local Post Office.

Another Support the Troops program has been added to those that are already up and running. This is a domestic program, located in Walla Walla, and working through the local VA.

View the program description and contact info for this addition to the STT by visiting: http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/wallawallava/

Thanks to IPMS El Paso (Region 6) and IPMS Craig Hewitt (Region 10) , another box of models is on its way to one of the Support the Troops programs in Afghanistan. IPMS El Paso supplied the shipping costs and the models were provided by IPMS Craig Hewitt.

Visit the IPMS Gallery at http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/ to view a description of each program with the STT Initiative. Also recently added are a list of donors and an example of a Customs Form that must be presented at the Post Office when shipping APO items overseas.

A special note: While some donors are recognized (at the above url) many donate items and remain anonymous. At the Phoenix and Omaha Conventions, participants placed items in the Donation Stations that were set up, as will be the case at the upcoming Orlando Convention. And across Region 6, modelers have donated items at Donation Stations set up at IPMS SWAMP's "Calmex", IPMS Alamo Squadron's "Modelfiesta", and IPMS Houston's annual show. IPMS NCT will also provide space for a Donation Station at its upcoming show. IPMS Acadiana and IPMS Austin Scale Modelers have also contibuted table space to an IPMS/USA table at which a Donation Station was set up.

A special shout-out to Arron Skinner and Fine Scale Modeler. FSM ran a paragraph about the STT Initiative a few months ago and since that time the number of donors and amount of donated items has grown substantially.

You and your Chapter can donate items by visiting the link (above), and then reading the description of each of the programs featured at that link. Use the email address for the Point of Contact to ask for a specific mailing address for the overseas programs. If in doubt as to how to proceed please contact the IPMS Secretary at ipmssec@ipmsusa.org for suggestions.

Thanks to all who have participated in this program!

One of the newly organized "Support the Troops" programs is now receiving and distributing incoming donations. This image comes from Wes Macon's group, located in Afghanistan. The model came from a Donation Station set up at the recent IPMS Alamo Squadron contest, and the funding to ship this kit, as well as several other large boxes, came from IPMS El Paso.

View more images and find the contact info for this program at http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/Smith/

Thanks to Mark Young for supporting the Camp Smith (Afghanistan) program! Mark sent some items and the box arrived at its destination in under a week!

IPMS El Paso continues to fund shipments of donated items to the international programs, and folks continue to supply models, tools, and hobby related items.

Thanks to all who make contributions to the Support the Troops programs!

Boxes of donated items are arriving at both of the "Support the Troops" locations in Afghanistan. Mark Young's recently donated items are featured in a new group of images available in the gallery featuring the STT programs.

Use this link to jump directly to the Camp Smith Album within the gallery.

All of the STT programs can use your support, both those overseas and those that are domestic, so please consider donating to the program of your choice. Visit the main album and then "open" the program albums for descriptions and email links to the person who is serving as the Point of Contact.

Just in from Wes Macon, he is sharing donated items with some of the troops who are in the hospital at Kandahar. You can view a pic by using this link . Spend some time looking at the Kandahar program as well as the other Support the Troops programs featured in the gallery. You'll find email addresses for those who are serving as the Point of Contact for each program.

All programs are in need of kits, tools, and hobby related items.

If you have questions about the programs or the "donation" process please contact the IPMS Secretary.

IPMS El Paso gets a pat on the back for shipping two very full and very heavy boxes to the guys at Tarin Kowt. In about 2 weeks the load of incoming plastic will arrive and provide hours of fun and diversion to the troops at the base. You can view a description of the Tarin Kowt program, and also find the email address for Brian, who is the Point of Contact at T.K.

Loaded with donations from various modelers, another ABC Night took place on June 27, 2012 at the Warrior Family Support Center/Brooke Army Med Ctr. in San Antonio, Tx.

View the new images from June 27th by clicking here.

Kits were distributed, tools were handed (the participants keep the tools!) and a very relaxing and enjoyable time was had by all. You may wonder about the civilians and dependents in the pictures.... each Warrior can be accompanied by a family member and dependent during their stay at BAMC. Think of a Ronald McDonald-like housing arrangement and you are not far off.

Alpha Abrasives ( www.alphaabrasives.com) supplied those yellow hemostats you see in some of the images. ( http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/IPMS-Wounded_Warriors/June+27+2012-7.JPG.html )

There are several "programs" within the Support the Troops Initiative and each is in need of your support in the form of a donation. Please view a description of each program and find the "contact info" you need to send donations to the persons who organize the programs by viewing http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/

Thanks!

A change of personnel is taking place within the Support the Troops program at Kandahar. Please hold any shipments of donations to this particular program until we confirm the address of the new Point of Contact.

In the meantime, check out the handful of new images provided by Wes Macon.
