Matt, Jerry was seriously injured in a crash in 2003 at Richmond during a practice session. Among other things, he suffered serious head injuries, and still has aftereffects from those injuries. He hasn't raced since then, and has said that he will likely never compete at the Cup level again. He has worked with a few teams, acting as a mentor to young drivers (David Gilliland included).
