Swastikas certainly offend some, but I'm more offended by trying to edit them out of history.

This, right here. Regardless of what they represent(ed), they are an important part of history. Important as a reminder of what evil really is, and of the memories of all who fought against that evil.

Rewriting history and tearing down statues really pisses me off.

Blatant exposure of Genitalia and Gore on models I find in bad taste! Pornographic exposure of genitalia or any? Is a Greek Hoplite acceptable?

Gil, I am am  looking for consensus or agreement or even debate. I have been trying to simply get people to open up about what they don't like and why. More of a survey. It is an effort to communicate and understand what others think because it struck me as odd someone would be offended by something so trivial as a dead horse.

It is a general modeling question because people often do models which conforms to the rules, but still upsets someone.

And glorifying hate and oppression with statues of the perpetrators of that hate and oppression really angers me!
There is another opinion for Dak’s survey. I hope it helps.

Dak.       Pornographic exposure in answer to your question. A Greek hoplite would be in historical context. I think that I already mentioned pornographic exposure as being gross in a previous post of mine.

The bottom line in your original post actually asks about what people think would be inappropriate in a model contest, does it not? Having read through the complete thread, I think most have tried to answer this question reasonably well. The mention of model contest by implication naturally evoked the rules coming up during this discussion.

Noel, you are absolutely correct. I admit I was somewhat imprecise and speaking broadly in earlier posts. The intent was not to discuss the rules but to discover some of those personal things that upset people.

Still, some wanted to jump in and defend the current rules. I really don’t care about them as long as they are applied consistently. I just was wondering if there were others with what I would consider strange phobic subjects.

Pornography of course, is subjective. Some consider classic nose art as pornographic.

Otherwise, there doesn’t seem to be much that upsets folks.

Nose art. Titillating rather than pornographic in my view and most I guess.

For me, its dioramas with just dead people.  I don’t mind a D-Day dio with a landing craft with infantry charging out from the ramp, with shells exploding all around.  If there are casualties, it’s OK so long as they increase the dramatic effect and contribute to the narrative.  But to do an “after the battle” scene with just dead bodies strewn about is tasteless to me.

Now, if the dead person(s) tell a story, that’s OK, but it can’t simply be “he got shot in the face and died screaming”.  I cannot say I get offended, I just dislike that kind of thing.

Oh yeah, and Itasha cars.  Don’t get me started on that one.

one of the basic tenets of writing & public speaking is to tailor the presentation to your audience.

That may be true and sound advice, but it doesn't answer the original question.

It seems that every year there is something which upsets someone for some reason. For example, this year some one got upset about the way an American flag was used to display some models.

There is some precedent in of sudden "bans" based on someone's complaint because they saw something which upset them.

For me, (please don't judge) as long as blatant sex of any kind is left out, I can deal with everything else.  I know that's a loaded statement (such as define "blatant") which is why I refer to "me" only.

IMHO, Nick nailed it with "Better to err on the side of discretion and the ordinary rules of good taste."

An example comes to mind from WWII Army Cartoonist Bill Mauldin's autobiography, when he was asked why he didn't draw dead bodies in his otherwise authentic battlefield (humor) vignettes. His response was that if he did his job well, it was implicit that death was likely nearby (it is a battlefield), while allowing some space for a lighter moment or topic, in that historic context. I've done a couple of these cartoons as dioramas and it works.

Regarding 'discretion'': The ubiquitous 1/35 WWII German soldiers, defecating, visiting hookers, etc, are just not on the same level as, say Michelangelo's Pieta, which is an iconic death scene. If that distinction requires further explanation...

But, I’m not asking in a hypothetical or general way, I’m asking what specifically upsets people.

For example, I dislike SS troops being shown victorious or valiant.

Seeing Patton peeing in the Rhine doesn’t offend me at all.

So, I'm curious what sort of things upset others? What do you think is "inappropriate" for a model contest and why?

Seeing someone walk out of the restroom without washing their hands at a contest. That really grosses me out, and happens way too often for adults that should know better, and is certainly inappropriate in my book as it is inconsiderate of the health of others.

With regards to the models themselves, I cannot think of any instance where I was offended. If I do not like something, I just move along.

Note: When people use the toilet, they zip and buckle up so whatever was on their hands is now on their clothes. 😉
