Help with primer.

I am fixing a couple of Lionel tanker cars for a friend.  I am using strip styrene but I have also had to grind/sand through areas of the aluminum.  Would any of you be able to point me to a brushable primer that settles down and leaves a smooth finish.  Thank you all.

Regards, JD

Check out Mr. Surfacer primer.  It comes in several grades both rattle can & bottle.  The higher the number, the finer the finish.  https://store.spruebrothers.com/searchresults.asp?Search=mr.+surfacer&Submit=

Since it's metal, you want something with more "tooth". An acrylic might not adhere well Try something simple, like Tester's enamel primer. Stir it well and thin it with their thinner,. Experiment on a scrap piece of metal first. If you thin it to a good consistency, it should settle our well. When thoroughly set ( a couple days) try wet sanding it very lightly with 600 or higher grit sandpaper to feather out any edges.
