ANM66 2000 lb bomb USA

I've been looking for WWII (although stocks were used until the 1960's) AMN66 2000 lb bombs in 1/72 scale.  As far as I can find, no one makes any, nor do I know of a kit where any have been provided.   I was wandering whether anyone out there might know of a near-sized smaller type bomb in 1/48 or 1/32 scale?

As near as I can find, the bomb I'm looking for would have an L.O.A. of real 90.4", which in 1/72 works out to 1-7/16" or 34.5mm.

The length of the bomb body only is 70.00" in real life, or 1-1/8" or 21.5mm.

The diameter of the bomb body is 23.3 inches in real life or just a hair over 5/16" or 8.5mm or thereabouts.

What I am trying to do is substitute on of the larger scales' smaller bombs for the 1/72 2000 pounder.

It looks like this (not to scale):

I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of a 1/48 or 1/32 scale smaller poundage bom that looks like this at is fairly close to the dimensions given above, that I could substitute for 1/72 2000 pounders.

Appreciate any ideas or leads, as I need two of these...

If you have access to a lathe, you could turn the bomb body from acrylic rod. The fin assembly can be make from sheet styrene.

But I think you have miscalculated the 1/72 dimensions. The overall length of 90.4 in would be 1.25 in (90.4/72) or 31.9 mm (90.4/72 x 25.4) in 1/72 scale. Length of bomb body would be 0.97 in or 24.7 mm in 1/72. Diameter of bomb body would be 0.32 in or 8.2 mm in 1/72.

A 500-lb AN-M64A1 General Purpose bomb has an overall length of 59.16 in or 1.24 in or 31.5 mm in 1/48 scale, and a body diameter of 14.18 in or 0.30 in or 7.5 mm in 1/48 scale.

So I think you could use some 1/48 500-lb bombs as substitutes for 1/72 2000-lb bombs. The differences are probably too small to be noticed by anyone without a micrometer.

Mr. Ellickson, Based on Mr. McMurtrey’s calculations, which I think are correct, I have 2 bombs from my spares box which I believe will be a close match. Now, they are old and will require some cleanup. But you are quite welcome to them. If interested, please private message me with your address.

1/48 scale 500-lb bombs have been produced by Squadron (TD48503), Eduard (EU648081), and MK.1 Design I (catalogue number unavailable). Between these and Nick's offer, you should be able to find what you need.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ed, I will be out of town until next week. I will put the parts in the mail then. ( Notice I took care not to say “ I will put the bombs in the mail” in case someone like the FBI has not read this entire thread! Regards, Nick
