One of my latest commissions is the Williams Bros. C-46. Not just an OOB project, the client also specified and provided a number of aftermarket components, not the least of which is a photoetch cockpit detail set. As a result, I thought y'all might want to follow along. Enjoy.

Interesting that you started the gear door removal with the scriber instead of the knife, but I have found you can do a LOT of different jobs with that UMM tool, especially when pushing it. Looking forward to further reports!

Gil,

If I had been trying to save the molded in door area, I probably would've gone with a #11 all the way. But the molded in groove combined with provided doors made the scriber a better option.

This is looking great so far. Yeah, I used the No.11 blade too since I couldn't find my scriber at the time. Thanks for the memories, I'm looking forward to seeing more of this done.

Looks like a good start. I was going to provide reference to my build of the C-46 a long time ago (http://clarescorner.com/C-46.html) but reading my notes, I noticed that I had contacted you before building the model. Have fun. I still love the overall, mean look of the C-46.

Got that right Clare! We need one in 1/48! In fact, I was surprised when Trumpeter did their 1/48 C-47....the C-46 would have been a much better choice since the Monogram C-47 was already available!

Richard, I am eager to see the journey. I spread the bottom of the aft fuselage to get it to fit the wing center section, fiddled with the floor a lot, and the windshield was another area. I tried a vacuform replacement but in the end used the kit parts and they worked out fine. I scrapped a Revell or Monogram Marauder for the engines and they worked out well.

John,

If you have an original kit, the floor is too wide. The repop kit, after Britt Industries resurrected Williams Bros., has a properly narrowed floor. I was provided a vacuform canopy by the client, so I'll have to use it. Since most C-46s on the ground are seen with the cowl flaps open, I may have to modify the cowls.

Thanks, Richard. I still have four more original kits in the stash so I made a template of the fixed floor. I doubt I will get to it but I can see a C-46 built up with open doors and loading a jeep on a ramp.
