This is a generic 1942 style PBY-5. I built it for a PBM pilot who trained on PBY's at Corpus Christi Texas. Perhaps the PBY's most famous feat is the discovery of the Japanese Fleet at Midway but she did a whole lot more than that both during and long after the war.

Jim- If your pilot friend trained at Corpus Christi, ask him if he ever flew with Swede Johnson. That is my Dad and he flew with VPB-33 "Black Cats" at the start of the war and after his tour in New Guinea he rotated back to the states as an instructor at Corpus and Jacksonville.

 

By the way that is a 5A. The 5 was strictly a seaplane. The 5A was the amphibious version.

You are correct Pete. I knew that just brain dead I guess. I prefer the seaplane myself.

 

I'll see if the gentleman is still alive and ask about your Dad.
