1/700 Tamiya Bogue: Another little fast build

So, the San Francisco's hull plating sucks on the fact that it has none. I've wanted to try the "tape = hull plating" idea and figured I'd try it on a small, cheap boat. Queue USS Bogue.

Using on this:

- Tom's Modelworks PE for CVE's and CVL's

- GMM 20mm guns

- Niko 5"/38 DP guns

- Various stryene and brass bits.

- Fine Molds twin 40mm bofors guns

- Eduard flight deck and USN crew members

- Vinyl masks from Gator Masks

- Trumpeter 1/700 aircraft.

So, I've primed the hull and dry fitted the flight deck. Mast is not glued down.

Ideally, I'll have the basic paint done this weekend. If I get a good amount of free time, I could have this little bugger done by next week.

The odd dog? Me playing with server software. Please disregard.

I wanted a VERY weathered flight deck, so painting it a base tan was integral. I used Tamiya Deck tan, then hit it with some oils and sealed with Future to help protect this layer from future sanding.

I next pained the deck 20-B and masked/painted on the deck lines.

They're very.... contrasting, but we'll get that taken care of with a little bit of work. I then added on the 20 hull numbering.

It looks so pretty and clean. I fixed that with a bit of light sanding and scratching.

...and this is how she looked after a bath in an burnt umber oil wash:

I, ah, hate sound to EVER compliment my own work, but this turned out pretty awesome.

I've been spending the rest of the day cleaning up the paint work and putting a few oil washes on the main hull. Here's where I am now. There's some splots to correct on the stern, but nothing terribly difficult.

I've build up 80% of her armament and will be adding it to the ship here soon. Comments are welcome.

Thanks guys. I've stopped giving a damn about contests and I'm just messin' around now.

Update.
- I've build the 40mm bofors and added Tom's Modelworks railings. I still need to paint the recoil mechanisms, but I'll do that tomorrow.
- Weathered the hull with some fading (grey,) washes, and streaking with oils.
- Attached Niko Model's 5"/38
- Fixed painting errors.
- Built the 28 20mm guns from GMM
I'll spray and attach railing tomorrow. Once that's done, I'll attach her 20mm guns that line the hull and crew her up a bit. I'm not too happy with the size of the anchor chain, so I may replace it all together. Paint is also not adhering terribly well. Once I'm satisfied with her side galleries and bow/stern batteries, I'll attach the flight deck and mast.

Blurry, but you can see the Niko and Fine Molds guns.

All for now.

Thanks.

Jim: I'm sure it'll end up in a show. I just roll like that. Still, I'm just having fun.

Bob: Thanks. I totally did not expect it to turn out this nice.

Rick: Thanks. I guess ya get better with every build, eh? My goal is to one day have the skills to compete at Nationals.

These pictures are blurry because I didn't take off my phone's Lifeproof case, but they do give you an idea of the small amount of work I've been able to do. I've airbrushed her railing on the fret (not shown,) used further oil washes to simulate additional rust, and painted detail items that needed to be done like the 40mm recoil assemblies.

I also has to order some parts from FreeTimeHobbies to accurately build her under flight deck galleries.

So, blurry.

Also here's a little preview of two little projects I'm going to work on once the San Francisco is done.

Thanks man. IMO, weathering will make or break a ship model build. I TRY to generally compare my work with photographs from the period that I want to model, even going as far as to take black and white photos of a model to decide if I'm making what I see in pictures.

So far, so good. The CVEs of the Bogue class were all used quite extensively and suffered quite a bit of a beating. CVE-20, USS Barnes, is one of the few that saw extensive Pacific service and MAY have worn a disruptive pattern modeled here.

I haven't gotten a lot done on this ship. My in laws have been in town and I've just been feeling a bit under the weather. I'm hoping to spend some time today dressing her in railing and attaching any 20mm guns not in the gallery. I'm also expecting a package with PE catwalks for carriers and tie downs for flotation devices.

I spotted some aircraft for giggles. However, my planned display will have her landing planes.

This picture is a FAR clearer view of the weathered hull.

All for now. I'm hoping for a "big" update tonight.

Lots done today. I'm going to have to do some touch up to the support struts, but overall, I'm happy. Work this week will focus on the gallery.

Aircraft are sort of in the position I plan. I'll have one of the Hellcats off to the side, crew trying to pull her back on board. The two forward will have their wings folded, with the third in process. I'll have on approach.

Should be fun.

This is sort of my plan with the boat. I'll have one Avenger coming in for a land (potentially trailing smoke) near the backside of the base.

Well, I've finished up adding railing and some small bits to the port gallery. This was a bigger pain in the ass that I expected because (a) I wanted to get it right and ( B) my puppy had other ideas.

Still, once it's dullcoated, it'll be money. I still need to put it under a bright light to clean any potential exposed brass.

I still need to paint the bridge windows. Today. Yes. Annoyingly, the only visible seam in the WHOLE BUILD comes from the damn top of the bridge. I'm gonna work on that too.

post-1852-0-39261700-1412871227_thumb.jpg

Flyhawk 20mm ammo boxes. These little PE boxes were fun. Once I got the technique down, they went quick. I'll double them up starboard as well.

post-1852-0-55240700-1412871241_thumb.jpg

So. Shiny. I loathe it. Still, it's got potential.

post-1852-0-34146600-1412871249_thumb.jpg

Note that the gallery is still missing a few cranes, rangefinders, and guns. Those will be added once all the railing is in place. I don't feel like losing important parts due to my own clumsiness.

Cranes will be interesting. Tamiya has them and they're OK. I'll probably add rigging and hooks then call it good.

The airwing? I'll start it soon.

Today has been all about adding small details and the airwing. I still have work to do on their canopies and other touch up work.

I chopped up Tamiya and Trumpeter 1/700 USN aircraft to spot on deck. I also added some Tom's PE to the planes and have been using clear plastic circles cut with a hole puncher to simulate a propeller in motion. Note that two of the Avengers will have their props almost stopped, which will involve a painted plastic disk. It'll be a pain, but it'll look right. Honestly, trying to do a three tone paint job on these things has been madness. I have no idea what I was thinking.

I've added some hoses, all the PE and some of the crew. I plan to add a lot more men to the galleries and place a good number on deck. I'm off work tomorrow so I'm hoping to have everything but the rigging, aircraft (though hope they're MOSTLY done), and base done.

Note that the aft most Avenger will be airborne a few yards off the ship's stern, tailhook extended.

Talk about landing on a postage stamp...absolutely no room for error.

The photo-etch really highlights the build. I don't know about you, but I really like applying the stuff to the build. It requires concentration, yet it is very relaxing to me.

You do it proud, sir.

Bill, with ships, especially in this scale, PE is a necessity. I absolutely LOVE adding PE. I think it adds realism and scale.
Thanks for the compliment.

Planes have been glued down. I used thin clear plastic punched out with a hole puncher for the Avenger's props, painted with some gunmetal to add the semi-transparent indication of the blades. Some of the superglue fogged the clear plastic in concentric circles which actually ended up looking... pretty cool. I decided to keep it.
I've got crew, rigging, and some small bits here and there on the carrier. I'll then build the water base and dull coat before painting the sea.
I'm very close.

Water's almost done. I'm not really super satisfied, but it works. Getting good water in 1/700 is a real struggle.

Ship itself? I think I can live with her. The dull coat fogged the clear props in a way that's cool for the ones on deck and so so for the one landing. Still, minor complaint. I added Eduard US CV figures and USN WWII figures to give the flight deck some life. Rigging was sprue and I managed to double the halyard lines thanks to some careful use of Jim Baumann's suggestions on complex rigging work. Beyond that, I kept the rigging simple.

I'll post FINAL pictures later.

Awesome as usual, Chris! I think the water is fine.

Odd observation: with all those planes parked forward blocking the wind over the bow, was there any dead air on deck to fly into when landing in those circumstances? Another reason I would rather be the first to land, not the last.

Ah. Yeah, especially with the tiny and short flight deck. I've read some accounts of pilots on these carriers. It was not fun.

Here's the finished product, though with a bad picture. I'll take some good ones when I get off work.

Whelp, stick a fork in her....

This was a fun little build. I've always loved the smaller contributors to the war that don't get as much press as, say battleships and carriers. USS Barnes (CVE-20) spent much of her life ferrying aircraft around the Pacific, but did contribute directly to battle via raids on Tarawa Atoll, being one of the few American Bogues to see a lot of action. She wore some sort of dazzle at that time, but I couldn't find records of it.

This model went together easily. Assembly was so simple that I decided to delve into my box of aftermarket goodies and add some flair to the little jeep carrier.

Parts included:

- Tom's Modelworks PE for CVE/CVL

- Tom's Modelworks PE for USN aircraft

- Eduard USN and USN carrier figures

- Trumpeter 1/700 USN aircraft

- Flyhawk USN cat walks, for carriers

- Scratched "mast" and additional antennae.

I chose to do a lot of experimentation on this build. I used some Tamiya tape, cut, to simulate hull plating and nipped the wings off of the aircraft. I chose to model her taking some aircraft back on board because I thought it would pose an interesting challenge to properly spot landed birds AND appropriately stage crew. I also played with some water base ideas, which were mostly successful. Additional care must be taken with the placement of "foam" on my next go around.

Successes:

- Chopping wings.

- Hull plating.

- Weathering.

- Flight deck. I'm ESPECIALLY proud here. Masking the details off was the best decision I could have made.

- Crew

- Aircraft placement

- Halyards. I doubled these up. It was a pain, but still a successful experiment.

Lukewarm:

- Painted aircraft

- Wake patterns

Loathe:

- Actually, place wake pattern here. It's just not that good.

Overall, I'm REAL happy with what took me about 14 days of work to do. 1/700 is always a total chore to detail, let alone to keep "clean." I still have much to learn on the latter.

Anyway, pictures:
