WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SCI-FI FILM OF ALL TIME?

Recommended Posts

OK, difficult to choose I realize, so your top 3, in no order of preference, is easier.

I'll start this sort of "Poll" type-thread.

A. 2001: A Space Odyssey

B. Blade Runner

C. Alien

OK, now, who's next?

C'mon, participate, this will be fun! :P

Oh, and 1 or 2 "Oddball" SF films that are kind of hokey, silly, or spoofs, "Guilty pleasures" you know are just personal films, you liked but didn't talk about! Some film considered at "Stinker", but you enjoyed! :smiley22:

my choices are:

A. A boy and his dog

B. Dark Star

Both kind of silly, but very enjoyable!

No one has mentioned the greatest Sci-Fi film of all time. Forbidden Planet. It is fantastic. Holds up even today.

Silent Running. Always brings me to tears at the end.

Oh yeah, hard to watch that one, huey, dewey and louie, and that Joan Baez music as the "Last Forest" drifts off in space, with the little bot, alone, watering a tree, real heart-breaker. :smiley19:

Dern was amazing in that role, good one! :smiley20:

To each their own, but it is a "Classic" SF film, right up there with "War of the Worlds" and "When Worlds Collide", I told you this was going to be fun, but tough to make definitive choices! So many wonderful Films, making a choice of top 3 is very difficult. And remember, the "runners up" are 2 "Spoofs", or what I call "guilty pleasures". Not serious films, but more along the lines of a "B" movie, that was not considered a "Classic" or a "Blockbuster", more like if you enjoyed the overall silliness of a film like "Plan 9 from outer Space". Very much like something Joel, and his bot friends, would joke around with, on "Mystery Science Theater 3000". :smiley17:

Definitely Blade Runner

EXCELLENT CHOICE!! It is quite a "Cult Phenomenon" and many Sci-Fi lover's agree, that although there are countless, superb Science-Fiction films, "Blade Runner" used all the best elements of the genre, to it's fullest application, in that film. Not saying "It's the Best", but it is to many people I know in the Industry, as well as everyday fans, and especially, with the "Hard-Core" Sci-Fi crowd.

Notice that my signature is "Do Androids dream of electric Sheep?" which is the original title of the book by Phillip K. Dick, "Blade Runner" was felt to be a more marketable name for the film.

The implications of the title are far reaching, and intensely spiritual. The question raised in this tale is "When does a machine, a creation of man, equal man, and gains "Sentience", self-awareness. Does it then possess a soul?"

Heavy stuff boys and girls!

The last scene, where Rutger Haur, who plays The "Android", Roy Batty, saves Decker's (Harrison Ford) life, and speaks of his travels to "The Rings of Orion" is legendary.

Enemy Mine should be added. I agree with your one and two.

For a GP, how about the original "Thing" with James Arness as the giant carrot and "The Blob" with a young Steve McQueen.

Not only that, but it remains culturally (and socially) relevant.

On a lighter note, how about an 80's sci-fi film - "The Stuff" it was 'The Blob' meets 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.

Saw it, a definite "Guilty Pleasure" vote on that. :smiley17:

Oh, "The Thing" is a Classic, and is in my "Top Ten" as is "Day of the Triffids", but I just want you to wittle it down to 3. "Enemy Mine" is excellent, a very well done film, with a superb cast and writers!

"The Blob" is a Cult-Classic, and probably ranks as a "Guilty Pleasure". :smiley17:
