Guest PetrolGator
USS Maine suffered some pretty ugly damage in my move so I've postponed completion until I find some parts that I need to complete her. I've decided to move up to 1/350 again now that I FINALLY have the room to build something in this scale. Yukikaze is a precursor to a 1/350 Yamato I plan to go absolutely nuts on. Yuki is a good kit, and the 1940 version gives the clear early war version that I love so much. I plan to waterline her, showing her at Guadalcanal when she possibly put a torpedo into the fantail of the Laffey. I'm using Veterans Models for various deck equipment, rangefinders, and other its. Her AA guns and ammunition boxes are from Alliance, along with other PE sets. I'm also using the dedicated Eduard set for this kit. Current progress is as follows: I've replaced the brass strips... with brass. Some PE work is done, though the whole thing is going intentionally slow. I'm enjoying the process on this one for once. All the stuff I'm going to use. All for now, and for a bit. Work will be slow on this. My recent move to New Orleans has once again granted me a social life.
Mark Aldrich
Looking nice! Have fun with all that PE!!!
Guest PetrolGator
PE = fun. Gaps = Not. Progress: - Finished PE of bridge - Detailed interior. Yes. I actually did this. - Added some plastic stripping based on the Kagero 3D book. It's a wee bit overscale, but whatever. It'll look cool. - Finished aft funnel PE and surrounding area. I need to add some generic railing, but that's it. I also glued it down. It's now pending seam filling. - Yuki looked goofy without SOME teeth, so I threw on one of her turrets with brass barrels. - Added parts from Veterans (searchlight, bridge details) Next step: Paint interior of bridge and attach the top permanently. I'll then fill gaps and mask around the bridge.

Guest PetrolGator
UPDATE! Yukikaze has gotten her rather pathetic little anti-air setup. Seriously. This is it. Heh... appears like I forgot the sights for one of the guns. Whoops. I also need to fix a seat. Whoops x2 I've started work on the forward funnel. I have some scratching to do to match my resources to REALLY detail it. I hope to have that done tonight. Bridge and stuff. I still need to add some stuff. Guest PetrolGator
Update. I've been slowly chipping away at the PE. I've replaced the searchlight and several range finders with Veterans equivalent and used AMW's AA guns. I've also used some of my brass stock to help dress her up along with AMW PE sets. I LIKE most of Alliance's stuff, but the hand rails could have used shorter supports. It's WAY overscale. I'm having to nip them a bit to keep it all looking neat. The Eduard set is a joy to worth it. PE bends easily and seems relatively strong. I'm hoping to have the forward funnel done tomorrow (minus handrails which will be applied later) and cemented on. In an ideal world, the turrets will all have their barrels. Note: Portions of the mast are so thick as to actively bother me. I'll be replacing a lot of the outriggers with brass. I may keep the plastic tripod, however. Recall that this WILL be waterlined. I'm keeping the bottom hull for (1) strength and (2) the bow, which will be partially out of the water. Mockery welcome. Guest PetrolGator
So, yeah... more PE. I'm building this SLOWLY, which may just become my "normal speed" with the newfangled social life and whatnot. Turret. I have one more of these to do. I also need to rejoin the upper handrails. Jeez. These boats are like jungle jims.. Turrets in place. Overall hull shot. The Eduard PE is nice, for the most part. I'm leaning toward rebuilding the masts with brass. It's a REAL weak spot for me and these..... interesting masts will prove a real challenge. Note the torpedo crane at her aft. I'm using the plastic simply to gauge how the mainmast fits. Guest PetrolGator
Most of the base paint work is done. Here's my most recent dry fit. Bridge and stacks are attached but the turrets and foremast are not. Yeah. That mast is too thick. Can anyone spot Yukikaze's victim in the background? She will be waterlined, firing her fish. Next step: add some remaining bits here and there and then begin my favorite part of a build: weathering!

Guest PetrolGator
Ha. No. It's hard to see, but the Laffey's back there. I'm building the Yukikaze in her 1942 configuration, when she participated in the First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.

WildBill50
Chris, What was the pupose of the brass with the linoleum decking? is it just where the sheeting would meet? It seems like everything is coming along well for the build so far. Cool ship. One of my guys has a 1/200 scale "Yuki" he built some time ago. Keep up the good work. Guest PetrolGator
Bill: The stripping held down the linoleum decking. What I have is a LITTLE overscale, but it looks good. I've Futured, done some weathering, added railing, crew, and some little details. I also broke down and added some piping to the underside of the bridge wings. I'm glad I did. The forward railing, with the odd surface, was a PAIN. I also added some platforms along the edge of the bow (forgot was these were called?) from Rainbow's excellent deck set. My propeller guards also come from this same set. To do: - Finish taking care of any paint blemishes and add the decals I forgot. Blend. - Hit it with dullcoat - Rig - Water base. Currently, it's a wee bit... glossy. Here are the pictures: Notice the piping. The funnel caps were noticeably lightened through weathering. I'll darken them with some pastels. Hopefully, I'll have some dullcoated and rigged photos in the next few days. Comments always welcome. I appreciate criticism.
Guest PetrolGator
Why is it that the last few stages of a build seem to take forever? Between filling gaps and adding details, well, it's a pain. I've decided to build some wee detail while waiting for paint to dry on the forward launches. This wood was made using strip styrene, painted Tamiya deck tan, then dirtied with oils. The pile was (haphazardly) stacked, then glued with some wire to hold it all together. I think I'll make another stack or two while I wait for the other two launches to dry. I installed the launches on deck, as per the Kagero book. You may note the davits are different, compared to previous pictures I post. This is because I am a stupid person and I do not even bother to glance at directions when adding new parts to a model. I assume, place them in the wrong place, then proceed to break a dozen things fixing it. Midships and my fat thumb. Figures are L'Arsenal and guns are care of Alliance Modelworks... nice stuff. Hose is made from wire, painted tan, then darkened with oil. (This sort of painting is a theme for my builds. I dig oils.) Overall stern view. Remaining work will center around rigging and two boats. Once that's all done, she'll get her dullcoat and I'll place Yukikaze in her waterbase. I'm debating on my next build. I'm either going to go easy and do a Tamiya Fletcher, attempt some scratch work and do a Trumpy Sullivans as the USS Johnston, or jump right into my Monochrome Akizuki that I've spent ages looking for. Still debating.
Guest PetrolGator
Forgive the poor imagine quality. Yukikaze is largely complete. I have to add two more launches to her midships, add some sprue for those davits, dullcoat, and maybe add a flag or two to the halyards. ....then it's off to the races with the water base. I'm really happy with the details on this, so-so with the rigging, and pretty happy with the paint. I definitely see major issues that need addressing on my next build. Really blurry. Sorry. There are few good places to take photos of models in my new house. I'm going to have to get creative and build a new booth, methinks.
Spruemeister
I love it! It's another masterpiece! By all means, get yourself a good photo setup. You've certainly got some photo worthy material. Rick L.
ewahl
Cool idea to catch your own reflection taking the photo in the glass door window. The ship is looking great! When I take club meeting model photos for the Newsletter, I bring two light blue foam core panels that I picked up at Hobby Lobby in the frame materials/art department. These two panels can be your base and background. If one gets too beat up, buy another one to replace it. My two panels have survived almost ten years of use. I store them face-to-face to protect the color panels in a basement room at home between meetings. I usually work with room lighting (fluorescent) and no flash. You get a monotone background that eliminates all background clutter of tools, paints, other model boxes, which makes looking at your model the only task for a viewer. Spruemeister
Your ship building is one thing, and your water is another. All together it's a complete package! Well done. Rick L.
ClareWentzel
Great job. The PE really adds detail to the model. Question, what are the two turrets in the middle of the ship for? You added brass barrels for the front and two rear turrets. From that, I conclude that the two middle ones are not for guns. What are they for? Guest PetrolGator
Clare, The turrets in question are for her Long Lance torpedoes. The Japanese believed (correctly) that the crews would perform better out of the elements. Here's some better photos of the Yukikaze. I'm going to dress up the base tonight.
