Guest PetrolGator
Back at it! Done: Detail painting (clean up) and building planes. I've finished all the Junkers and one of the torpedo bombers. I lost the damn nose cones for the biplane to the carpet and... made some replacements from a tooth pick. It works. Sort of. There's a LOT left. I still have to finish three bombers, rigging, and crew. There's also this little thing called CLEAN UP. I can still see some bloody brass when I hit it with a light. I've fixed some overspray here. It looks a LOT better. Bombers. I'll be gluing them something like this. Single torpedo bomber. Orange Hobby aircraft lead to grey hairs. Mark Deliduka
Wow. The Germans came up with alot of good ideas. That wasn't one of them. Why not just copy the air ops of the more experienced nations I wonder? Rick L. Everyone knows the Germans love to engineer; or over-engineer as it were. Still, this was meant to escort ships like the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau or even the Bismarck and Tirpitz while they go after the transports crossing the Atlantic. In that respect, this launch system would be efficient enough. It wasn't meant to be a strike carrier per se; the fighters were meant to protect the surface vessels attacking the convoy while the dive- and torpedo-bombers supplemented the surface attacks. The dive- and torpedo-bombers were also probably meant to go after the convoy escorts to keep them off the surface ships so that the surface ships could take out more transports. When you consider it in this context, their system pretty well makes sense. Just my two sense from what little I researched while building my old Revell plastic one some years ago. I got a second one and a Minsk carrier to kitbash into a "What if?" Soviet carrier that I may someday do. Chris, I bow in the presence of Greatness! This is one incredible ship, and I can see many awards in your future with this. Next Christmas, I want Santa to bring me a copy of your abilities! Guest PetrolGator
Air group.. BUILT! Now for the painting which I'm sure is going to be fun! :Smile_sceptic: Those are kind words, Mark, though I often see many, many faults in my builds. Let's hope I win something at CALMEX with this thing, if I finish it in time...
Guest PetrolGator
I had some ambitious plans to paint these planes, but well, I'm about ready to be done with this boat AND I'm sick. Bad combination. Still the light blue/navy plus looks REALLY handsome on her deck. Obviously, these planes aren't done (need to detail cockpits, wheels, nosecones, and add details) but I'm finally seeing an ending. I'm using some wire and styrene stock to make some hoses and whatnot, plus hope to add a significant crew to the ship. I'm going to try to rig, again, with stretched sprue. We'll see how that goes. Guest PetrolGator
Ha. I may live down here, but I am FAR from Cajun. I hate LSU, don't eat fried food, and I'm told I'm sort of a snarky ass. I'd take sushi over crawfish any day. :) That being said, I DO dig zydeco and have a personal relationship with beer. Guest PetrolGator
....still painting birds. Here's where they are now. I need to do some touch up and add decals tomorrow. Interior of the Ju-87 folded wings is interior green. I also hit the back seat gunner's chair with some of the same color. Canopies are painted a darker grey. I didn't want to go too light on them since the whole feeling of the ship is rather dark.
Guest PetrolGator
HEY LOOK! MULTIPLE PLANES! I've effectively finished her air wing. I MAY add some antennae and rigging, depending on time. I haven't decided. I'm going to hit the Zeppelin with a small flashlight one last time to check for exposed brass and then glue down the aircraft. I'm currently making some deck equipment (boxes, hoses, etc) and crew to giver the ship some life. I also plan to add a LITTLE more weathering to the flight deck, but don't want to go too far... Assuming an easy time rigging, this should be done by Sunday! Assuming. Comments welcome, especially of the critical sort.
Guest PetrolGator
All planes are glued down! I've added these uh, barrier things (anyone shed light on what these are?) and started added some hose piles to the deck for detail. I'll be adding some other bits and crew tomorrow. She'll be rigged, then dull coated. Final steps on the ship will come with a last sweet of brass or "shiny" spots. I'll then finish the bow wave and buff up the water. Added some skid spots where planes would touch down and hook the arrestor cables. Pictures of the planes and uh, barriers?
VonL
"liked" is a funny was of saying I hated my life. I'm still not done. This little things will be the end of me. I think I'm going to avoid CV building for a while.... Felt the same way about a certain 1/700 DE photoetch misadventure. That's why it's taken me about four years to get about 30% done. Madness. Maybe a 1/350 version is in order...for practice...or just give up on the 700th? Your DKM CV here is just beautiful. Would not want to see my work in that same level of photo resolution. Mark Deliduka
This is looking more and more fantastic every time I see it. I think those 'barriers' are actually deck extensions that fold down so that the tail of an aircraft can be parked off the edge to make more room on the deck. That would partially explain why they are all uniform in shape, instead of a long continuous line. They look great and really bring this thing to life. Looking forward to seeing more. Guest PetrolGator
I wish I could take a high def picture. I love how the crew came out, Mark. It shocks me how much adding some silly little chunks of PE and paint and liven a ship. I've also been cleaning up paint where I see issues and have started some of the rigging with Caenis. I'll be using that and spure, depending on application. She's looking alive and I love it. Hopefully, I'll finish her rigging tomorrow and dump a dullcoat on the hull. Once I'm done with that, I'll finish the water, yank the tape around it, and stain the base. That'll be the end of this one!
Guest PetrolGator
I caved and took some higher def pictures. One is a bit uh, photoshopped for fun.
Guest PetrolGator
Jim, she's DONE. Finally. Well, other than a protective layer on the wood and replacing a Fumo radar I knocked off the bow, she's done! Spruemeister
Its fabulous! All the little things add up to one BIG thing, and that's the cool part about modeling. ewahl
Hi, Chris, My simple mind cannot comprehend the pace at which you construct these masterpieces. It seems we saw you start with raw resin and sheet metal just a few weeks ago, yet now we see this beautiful finished ship with its air wing. Congratulations, sir! If I were a pilot of one of those big biplanes, I'd be thinking twice about landing it on the deck properly. One slight error in landing approach or some sudden shift in the steadiness of the ship and the wingtip catches one of those deck extenders or guard barriers. Crash! What happens to all those planes on deck when someone wants to land? Gotta move them out of the way in a hurry. That in a very narrow deck with not much room for pushing around planes with extended or folding wings. Ed
Guest PetrolGator
Gentlemen, thank you, seriously. This build was a total pain and, honestly, I almost considered shelving it. Edward: Most of the planes would be stowed below deck when landing aircraft. Still, that deck would SUCK to land on...
