The X-3 employed titanium and low-aspect ratio wings. The prototype was delivered in September 1952, with the first flight occurring the following month. Eventually a total of 51 X-3 test flights took place. However, the pair of Westinghouse J34 turbojet engines installed onboard was not powerful enough so it never actually reached Mach 1 in straight flight! The effort wasn’t wasted though, as data obtained from the X-3 was used to produce the F-104 Starfighter. Today the lone X-3 Stiletto example is on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio . Dragon has come up with a fantastic 1/144 scale plastic kit of the X-3 Stiletto and it perfectly captures the sleek lines of this experimental design. As an unbeatable bonus for modelers, two complete scale models are included in the set. One model builds into a standard model replica while the other has transparent exterior parts that reveal some of the X-3’s fascinating innards. The latter model will certainly provide aviation enthusiasts with a new appreciation for this futuristic aircraft design. All details are accurately rendered, including refined panel lines, the cockpit interior and the landing gear. With this set, the exterior and interior of these X-3 models may be shown off side by side. Only one X-3 Stiletto was ever built, but now Dragon offers a fantastic X-3 1+1 deal! AVAILABLE: February 2013 DRA6611 1/35 Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.H Mid-Production w/Zimmerit Barcode: 0 89195 86611 0 Box Size: 9.6" x 15" x 3.1" Dragon offers a complete lineup of the popular Panzer IV family tree in 1/35 scale. Now it is time to fill in a gap with this special variant! It’s an Ausf.H Mid-Production, and it specifically represents a vehicle fighting in Normandy in 1944. One unit to field the Panzer IV H was the 12th Panzer Hitlerjugend Division, with the formation’s combat debut occurring on 7 June 1944 as German forces began a ferocious defense of Caen in the Normandy area against Canadian and British units. It was one of the closest divisions to the landing beaches. When the German division eventually escaped the Falaise pocket, it had lost 42% of its personnel and 94% of its armor. This 1/35 scale plastic kit features a number of newly tooled parts, one example being the turret side skirts that have their own layer of readymade Zimmerit. Also brand new is the frontal armor plate containing the steering-brake hatches. This too bears a coating of Zimmerit, which is beautifully sculpted and looks extremely authentic. The inclusion of Zimmerit on this kit is certainly a highlight, as it saves modelers from the time-consuming task of recreating the texture themselves. The box comes with a generous selection of Cartograf decals, all of which cover those panzer divisions operational in Normandy , including the Hitlerjugend and 2nd Panzer Divisions. For those model-makers recreating a scene from Normandy , this is the perfect foundation on which to base it! AVAILABLE: February 2013 DRA6774 1/35 British 25pdr Field Gun Mk.II w/Limber Barcode: 0 89195 86774 2 Box Size: 9.6" x 15" x 2.4" Dragon earlier released a kit of the famous 25-pdr Field Gun (Item No.6675) and it was an instant hit. Now the British wave rolls on with a second kit showing a different variant of the ubiquitous artillery piece. Known officially as the ‘Ordnance QF 25 pounder’, it was the workhorse of British and Commonwealth field artillery units during WWII. The name came from the fact that the weapon fired a 25-pound shell, and ‘QF’ stood for Quick Firing. The 25-pdr entered service in 1940, and many consider it the best towed field gun of the war owing to its high rate of fire, lethal shell and good mobility. A total of 13,000 guns were built worldwide, with the Mark II being the most common variant in WWII. For transport, the 1,633kg howitzer was usually hitched to an ammunition limber (known as the “Trailer, Artillery, No 27”) containing 32 rounds. Dragon is offering another fantastic 1/35 scale plastic kit of the famous 25-pdr Mark II Field Gun. Specific modifications introduced on Item No. 6774 are a brand new cradle and shield mounts. These components are embossed with accurately rendered rivet detail. The 1/35 scale miniature replica was carefully researched using original guns as references, thus giving the model unparalleled levels of accuracy. Not only is the gun precisely dimensioned and detailed, but as a Smart Kit it offers an excellent balance of easy assembly. Wherever possible, components are separated into as few pieces as possible via the widespread employment of slide-mold technology. Furthermore, the gun comes with its associated ammunition limber, which features two doors that open to reveal the interior ammo storage trays. The limber storage area is faithfully reproduced and extremely easy to assemble. AVAILABLE: February 2013 DRA7504 1/72 Long Range Desert Group Patrol Car w/2cm Gun Barcode: 0 89195 87504 4 Box Size: 6.4" x 10.2" x 1.9" The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) was a highly effective unit that roved far behind enemy lines in North Africa during WWII. It gathered intelligence, performed reconnaissance and conducted attacks from mid-1940 through to April 1943. Yet the elite unit never exceeded 350 men at any one time. To successfully negotiate the desert, the LRDG used vehicles such as the two-wheel-drive truck. The truck entered service in March 1942 and these sturdy vehicles carried sand channels, jerry cans, a sun compass, sometimes a wireless, improved radiator cooling system and low-pressure desert tires. They were fitted with weapons such as Lewis guns, Vickers medium machine guns and the Vickers K. Some were even fitted with 2cm guns that had been captured from Italian forces. It was a 20mm antiaircraft gun widely used by Italy in WWII. Of course, the 330kg weapon could also be used against ground targets. Dragon earlier produced an all-new 1/72 scale plastic model of a standard LRDG patrol truck (Item No.7439). This proved a very popular subject, particularly for those interested in the North African theater of combat. That model utilized brand new toolings, with a single-piece chassis and a slide-molded front body with integral fenders and front grill. Now the kit has been joined by a truck that boasts even more firepower. All new for this kit is an intricate replica of the 2cm gun. The detailed weapon fits onto the rear body, which is a one-piece component for easy assembly and accurate alignment. The extra-large 10.50 x 20 sand tires are crisply detailed too. This is an exciting 1/72 model kit from Dragon, and it will make the perfect companion for the standard LRDG patrol truck as they roam the sands of North Africa!
