  1. I've long thought that OOTB has outlived its usefulness, given the advances in kit design and manufacturing since the category was established way back then, and given the exceptions which are allowed which have really turned it into "OOTB+". I'd like to see it eliminated. Redefine OOTB as strictly OOTB: Use only what is in the box, built per kit instructions with no major modifications to the parts (rigging and antennas allowble if suggested by the kit instructions). Put OOTB entries in the same categories as the others. If only the basics of construction and finishing are judged, then it's entirely conceivable that a well-done OOTB entry can beat a poorly built super-detailed model with a lot of aftermarket stuff.

Perhaps a partial solution is to create new categories for older kits: "Classic kits" (those over 25 years old), "Antique kits" (those over 45 years old), and "Vintage kits" (those over 60 years old), and allow whatever improvements the modeller wishes, from none to an all-out maximum effort.

  2. Those of you familiar with the Dallas-Fort Worth area will know of M-A-L Hobby shop in Irving, which has been at the same location since 1948 and which has also been a vendor at many past IPMS national conventions. I just learned this past Saturday that owner Ed Seay Jr, was diagnosed with dementia a little over a month ago and is now in a long-term care facility. The business had apparently been affected by his condition for some time.

Another local modeler reports that the building has been sold and will be transferred in phases. The N-track railroad club which is in one of the 4 or 5 store fronts will have 18 months to make other arrangements.

Local modelers and friends of Ed have been working there for the last four Saturdays cleaning out the back warehouse and have found lots of old new stock items which either Ed Sr or Ed Jr put away and forgot. A hundred or so Squadron In Action and Detail & Scale books will be going to Half Price Books, with the proceeds to go to support Ed’s care.

A lot of original material has been donated to the Frontiers of Flight museum in Dallas.

I had not seen Ed in about 6 weeks, and he seemed to be his usual self then, so I was stunned and truly saddened at the news when I visited the shop last Saturday. Back in the '70s, I and other modelers in Wichita Falls made regular monthly visits to M-A-L. Its closing marks — for all of us who knew Ed and his father and mother — the end of an era.

  3. After acquiring the Pactra and Floquil brands then discontinuing them, and more lately discontinuing most of the Master Model enamel line, Testors has apparently decided to get out of the acrylic paint business as well. 4. Those of us who used Floquil paint wrung our hands and gnashed our teeth when (1) Testor's acquired Floquil, and (2) Testor's discontinued Floquil. Now there's a company in the UK (Archive-X) reproducing some of the Floquil colors. There are only two drawbacks: (1) it is frightfully expensive (£12.00 for a 30 ml bottle!) and (2) being enamel, it cannot be mailed to the US. However, for those interested, here is the relevant Interweb page listing available colors:

    https://archive-x.com/collections/all-paints

Most available colors seem to be either railroad or ship colors, but elsewhere on the site is an implied intent to eventually reproduce the entire Floquil line.

  5. Other than an announcement by Rusty on the Steel Navy forum and a discussion on this forum of the pros and cons of judging systems, I can find no link to the actual survey itself. Shouldn't this be posted prominently on the web site? I don't believe in conspiracy theories, but why has it not received more publicity?

  6. Thanks to a respondent on the Starship Modeler forum, I was able to locate some of the info. The site I was looking for has been archived by the Wayback Machine, but some pages are missing.

The studio blueprint can be found here: https://web.archive.org/web/20141014212908/http://projects.airwolf.tv/resources/bpairwolf.html

(click on the image to download a larger version in ZIP format)

The "flight manual" can be found here: https://web.archive.org/web/20140803111230if_/http://projects.airwolf.tv/resources/manual.html

(The "Previous/Next" links on those pages work, or you can use the "Manual Page" links in the lower left-hand corner.)

There were some very nice CAD drawings done by a fan, but those no longer appear to be available, and his email is a defunct hotmail address.

There are also some 3D printed Airwolf and Bell 222 models in various scales available through Shapeways, but they all appear to be solid with no interior. Here's one designer's selection:

  7. I have a bookmark to a website (www.airwolf.tv) that had an Airwolf "technical/flight manual," but that site seems to have gone to 404Land. Might any IPMSers have saved said document?

I'm also looking for a copy of the studio plans of the aircraft, but all I've found online have been low-resolution partial copies. Anybody got the real deal?

  8. We do have online renewal. Click on "Join IPMS/USA" in the banner at the top of the home page, then select the type of membership (Junior, Adult, or Family) that you wish to renew, then select "Renewal" in the Options menu.

Note to admins: Perhaps "Join IPMS/USA" should be amended to "Join/Renew IPMS/USA."

    Nick beat me to it!
