  1. I finally wrapped this one up yesterday. I set out on this thinking that it would be an easy change to alter this kit from US to IDF configuration. It turns out  that what was envisaged as a quick few weeks build turned into something quite a bit more involved. Part of that was me, increasing the detail on the TOW system and the radios, and of course modifying the stowage of most everything else in the vehicle. From looking at photos, it looks like the IDF modified these jeeps several times over their service lives, and I went with something of a mid life configuration, based upon photos from Lebanon in 1982/83, combining features seen on several different TOW jeeps. I used AK Real Colors for the IDF Sand Gray and Humbrol & Vallejo for most all of the detail work.

Thank you. The red and white on the bars was to keep soldiers from walking into the running blades. I have one more I'm working on, gotta see if I can get more done on it soon.

  3. An old friend, now long gone, went through NATO’s International LRRP School when he was assigned to 2/325 in Italy back in the mid 80’s. Part of their training and exam testing was on identifying vehicles at least by basic type off of very little being visible, say such as a tarped vehicle on a railroad flatcar. Only portions of the lower hull, road wheels, and tracks would be visible in the photos, everything else covered by a tarp. Better have paid attention in class to know what you’re seeing…

  4. Unless an  SF ODA has a mission tasking of strategic reconnaissance, they often are not up to speed on vehicle recognition. Most of their mission tasking were not related to vehicle ID, and was more direct action/door kicker stuff. In LRS, vehicle ID was our bread and butter, and I used to teach classes for my unit.

  5. Well, between eBay, IPMS, and after AMPS visits to Andy's, I've picked up the following items...

for my 1/48 RAF a guy at IPMS was selling it off for a good price, so no way to pass it up...

    IMG_8882.jpg

then I found this decal set and PE set on eBay... each is bound for different kits in my stash...

    IMG_8883.jpg

after AMPS this past Saturday I found this item that I have been wanting for awhile at Andy's for a good price

    IMG_8881.jpg

I also grabbed these paints for current and future aircraft & armor projects... gotta love these AK Real Color paints!

    IMG_8884.jpg

and then for my 1/35 Panther A project my eBay order from Ukraine finally arrived recently to fill all those empty spaces on my kit

    Thats all for now...

Good catch Carlos! I had suspected that it was the case, but given the fuzziness in my brain, I wasn't sure enough to post.

Thanks Mark. 😁 Now you know my personal background, particularly when it comes to late Cold War armor 😉

This one is a BTR-70, not a BTR-60. It has the troop hatch between the second and third wheels on the lower hull, plus the “high angle” firing ports behind the turret on both side of the upper hull. The turret has roof top periscopes that the BTR-60 PB did not have. Lastly it does not have the large troop hatches on the upper hull sides.

  8. Thanks for your kind words Stuart and David.

Stuart, the clipped wing Spits were seen on many different Marks.
I’m presuming your use of the word gradient for the camouflage colors border is the same as using the terms feathered or soft edged.  Hard edge camo was common on English built WWII aircraft, but not universal. Some British built aircraft were painted with the feathered edged camouflage colors.

Silly Putty is extremely simple to use in that it is easily and quickly shaped and applied to make the curves. Cutting the tape can be more time consuming, not to mention that it can also potentially damage the paint and plastic below the masking tape during the shaping process.
And I don’t mind the questions at all. I love to talk about model building.

  9. Gil & Jean, thanks for looking in and commenting! I truly appreciate that you took the time and effort to do so.

Gil, I'm getting more practice at Silly Putty masking for the hard edged British camo schemes, and it sure does give a neat appearance. I'm with you on the bubble top and clipped wings altering the classic Spitfire lines into something snappy. With the revised cowling contours of the Griffon engine, I think that it looks stronger and meaner.

Jean, I'm always happy to share my builds on here. I think we need more modeling on this site and remember that's why we are all here!

  10. This is my build of the Academy 1/48 Spitfire FR. Mk.XIVe. I built it OOB aside from adding a seat harness and an acetate lens for the gunsight. I did replace the roundels and fin flashes with some Aeromaster decals, since the kit did not include the 1945 style upper wing roundels, which the markings should be. Otherwise, contrary to reputation, the Academy decals worked perfectly. The markings are for 451 Squadron at RAF Gatow near Berlin during the Allied occupation in 1945. I used Tamiya paints for the RAF Temperate Day Fighter scheme.

Since this model was built for the CAF Museum at Falcon Field in Mesa AZ, as part of Phoenix IPMS project, I kept weathering to an absolute minimum.

  11. So I have been doing lots of small purchases since my last update post on here, and now I have enough that's worth looking at...

For my 1/35 armor I picked up all these accessories/AM items... brass 20mm barrels for a quad Flak 38, brass engine deck screens for my current Panther project, a transmission for my Marder III to fill the open space in there, some ModelKasten T-34 tracks, and some Value Gear stowage... because you never can have enough of that stuff!

    IMG_8812.jpg

and this LAV-R, which I had been wanting for years and a guy on Armorama was selling off for a great price

    IMG_8814.jpg

Then for my aircraft I had been wanting one of the old Revell 1/32 FW-190D's for a long time, and again found a good deal for one

    IMG_8815.jpg

and some decals for the Dora, plus for a few other aircraft in my stash...
