  2. Takom 1/16 FT-17 Renault

    Hi all!

     

    This month I started a new challenge, my very first kit in 1/16 scale and on top of that from World War One, the Takom 1/16 FT-17 Renault! At first I was reluctant to choose this kit, since I have no experience on that scale and I have read about WWI in the past, but never work a kit from that era, so I'm on uncharted waters in many ways. I order the kit with a book reference which I receive from Spruebrothers in just 4 days! (consider that I’m out of the States in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico).

     

    Started right away to look at the parts and get familiarized and also look at the information and pictures of the reference book. So I started now calling this a Char, not a panzer, not a tank, that’s the word for tank in French. Also found that this tank was call during WWI just as FT! The FT-17 name was later after the war due to the amount of variants and other French’s projects related. This Char was considered the first tank ! and was used in many conflicts and many countries, so I found a lot of references for the colors.

     

    I started right away with the engine, at first the pictures were difficult to find, and even I confuse the American version with the french one.

     

    The engine its just called 4 HP Renault engine, the american one is the BUDA HU engine.

     

    The building its very straight forward, some cleaning is needed, but is minimal, the fitting is perfect. I added the cabling, the sparks plugs and some metal tubbing to represent it as much real as possible.

    Hi:

     

    This is my second attempt working with a resin bust, this time a wonderful kit from Young Miniatures. Its was a second hand purchase, so some parts where missing like the helmet and the gun sling, but still a good one to practice my painting skills. Hope you like the results.

    Sure doesn't look like baby-steps. This is really high-end artwork in scale modeling. Stunning. Maybe...I need to whip out an old kit and try this.

    Thank you! and you are right this work is not for the faint of heart, is a more advance process from the very start. Sure I can take the shortcut and avoid the black & white process, but its not the same, at least for me.

    Thank you very much for all your comments, still a bit of experimenting, but the real deal comes when you start doing the green color. You have to switch your mind to paint like you were using water colors looking for transparent results, so the previous work can be shown between the layers. Yes you eventually will need to retouch some of the work, but you have the advantage that you can see where exactly. In my case was minimal .

     

    I just sealed again the work for the decals process, meanwhile I can start painting the tools and all the small parts that were left out of the big painting process.

    You have really mastered the black & white tech. I have seen it done by Ian Hamelton from AMMO by MIG on soviet armor. Never seen the pre-weathering thou. Looking forward to seeingthe end results.

     

    Thank you Chris for that incredible compliment! I'm still on baby steps here, but trying my best and having fun along the way.

    So is the OD going to be a wash over the black/white? I haven't tried this system of painting yet.

    Correct, As in the color testing, I will apply very thin coats until built up to the desire color. Later with the oils and weathering the final color will be achieve allowing great part of the black & white work to be shown between the layers.

    Hi Fellas:

    Almost December, weather is getting really cold, so lets make a weekend kit, like the Tamiya oooooooooold really old Sherman M4A3 105 mm Howitzer just for the fun of it.

    Lot of stuff can be done to correct here and there, adding PE, changing wheels for AFV, and hull from Italeri, etc..but forget it, this is a build to have fun, so is going out of the box, except for the metal barrel of course.

    Here was my start during the spare time in the week. The kit is done in a few hours.

    I love the wear and scratches along the track skirts. About the only thing I'd change is the spare tracks on the front slope. I'd leave those all black vs. having the camouflage pattern continue over the track blocks. Spare tracks are often used as needed and then replaced with a couple of "fresh" blocks upon return.

    Maybe the judge was from the aircraft category and mostly they don't like too much weathering or mud. Just look at the latest Journal you will see a great number of clean kits winning over others with heavy weathering.

     

    I think is a great style and in europe is the key factor for winning.

    I agree Bryan, its looks like a Star Wars Universe tank with all this B&W effects. Its really a fun way to play with the kit before apply the base color.

     

    And this kit is really a breeze to build and really good looking one. Highly recommended for everyone, even OOB.

    Hi Fellas, back in business again! This time a easy kit for me, the Leopard 2A6 from Tamiya, wonderful kit, very easy to work with. Mine was a trade with a friend from FB, everything was ok, but the rubber tracks were over streched, so I have to replace it, I choose the Friulmodel tracks, metal barrel and whatnot, a small PE Set too.
