  1. Main coat of paint applied; SAC Euro-I three-color, c.1991. The Italeri instructions don't show the ventral, Gunship Gray swatches. Trust me, it's there. Couldn't find my references for that pattern, so I eyeballed it from AIRLINERS.net, other online pix and memory. It's on the non-faded undersides of the jet, so it's a more subtle contrast with the likewise non-faded areas of Euro-I Gray down there. Lighter shades of OD and Gunship were applied topside, to achieve the faded/panels effect. Walkways were 'reverse masked' using a lightened Gunship Gray, rather than the too-wide decals. Long way to go here...

    P-51d Finished...

Nice one! How did you pop-out the rivets just enough? Wash? Hope you heal up fast.
  3. Ahh, what's not to love...? Nice rhino!
  4. Good call - I'm intrigued to see this one built. Please do post pix. Mine will just have a pair of pilots in front, to 'fly' it from the ceiling...but the next one will likely have more of what you're doing. CHEERS! Von_L
  5. Rage On! As long as you're doing this creature in 1/72, may I suggest using the True Details T-38 seats as a closer fit for the BUFF...? If you can't get those, then the T-33 or F-105 seats might work. Key differences are the head rest shape, the parachute sits in the seat with the crewdog and the side-mounted combination armrest/pull trigger assembly that does not exist on the more modern ACES-II.
  6. Cool stuff! Forgot how much I enjoyed the Hawker Demon. Built one of those that I was happy with, but the rigging has sagged and self-destructed over time. Maybe it's worth it to re-rig, after all. Like that control tower too. It's also calling from the stash. Got an extra Kingfisher you'd like to trade? :)
  7. Mo'debly post the WIP pix of this. What a cool project - and very nicely completed, sir!
  8. Agreed on this point. Go for it - heck, put some lights in there! While I never saw a BUFF with its upper hatches open on the ramp, they do (did) take them off in the phase dock, whenever it's necessary to pull the ejection seats for maintenance. I passed up an opportunity to photograph this very process a long time ago...in a galaxy far, far away. I think the seats are similar to some other resin aftermarket type that's out there, forget which ones.
  9. Nice work on a very intriguing subject (even if it is in the 'wrong' scale). :)
  10. I'm intrigued by the DH-2; got one of those in the stash. Have you had any issues with the larger frame structures bowing? Are they straight as molded?
  11. Thanx for the encouragement! The divots in the aft fuselage appear to be a design error in the Italeri (ERTL) kit's fuselage cross section. On the real jet, it does not 'step in' as it does on the kit, but the cross section is a continuously shrinking oval in this area, which produces a gently curving side, as viewed from above/below. Check out these pix on Airliners.net: http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air/B...next_id=1443585 http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air/B...next_id=1400801 http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air/B...next_id=1399299 http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air/B...next_id=1378135 It can be kinda tough to see sometimes, but the surface of the fuselage is generally flush with the inboard surface of the horizontal stab. The kit's error irritates this old BUFF dude enough to wanna fix it. Gotta love Airliners.net - !!!
  12. More progress on Italeri's B-52G ALCM truck! Loaded pylons are done: A brutal bit of work fixing the shape of the aft fuselage (I don't remember Monogram getting this wrong). What you see here is a kluge of sheet plastic, Squadron Green Putty and Mr. Surfacer, after the Euro-I gray primer coat revealed the need for more work - !#$%*! . Next time, I'll pack the whole thing with layers of sheet styrene and carve to shape. Note also the crude .50 cal guns. I would replace these with resin aftermarket, leaving a bit of the existing shape as a 'shroud', but this model is gonna be a ceiling-hanger, so a swatch of gun-metal paint and good intentions will suffice. And the current family portrait for "umpteen gazillion parts flying in close formation":
  13. Nice! I'm inspired to drag out a string bag.
  14. Wow - Nice work! Here's hoping you have a great Christmas and an equally productive 2009.
  15. Like Tim, I'm fortunate to have a room over the garage - a proper loft in fact. Am slowly configuring this as my ultimate (and first-ever) official man-cave, after a lifetime of improvised spaces. I've stumbled across a great discovery downtown: The Habitat For Humanity people have something called a 'Re-Store', where they sell all kinds of second-hand home improvement supplies and components. This includes everything from cabinets to lighting to countertops to doors. While most of it is 'distressed' to varied degrees, prices are wonderful and a lot of this stuff is spot-on for a modeler's workbench/emporium. If you have one of these HFH Re-Stores in your town, run, don't walk, to check it out. CHEERS! Von_L
  16. Glad to help. I'll probably grab that 1/72 pod also. Sure wish there was a set of those towed-decoy system (TDS) blisters for the BONE in 1/72. I carved one, cast it in resin and used them on a Monogram kit, but was not really satisfied with the results.
  17. Thanx - Entirely too much cool stuff on that website. Nice work on those Maseratis; very sharp! I also dug the HD police bike. Hard to believe that stuff is HO scale. No PE accessories to be seen, so I'll cherry-pick from airplane, armor, ship and railroad sets, as able. CHEERS! Von_L
  18. Just pursuing another pipe-dream here: Have got a couple of those old Snap-A-Roos that I'd maybe like to plus up with some PE parts (sorry, collectors). Does anybody make some PE parts for the really old cars, pre-1925-ish?
  19. Here's part of the answer (USAF photo): Also: Shull24 makes one in 1/48 along with some other cool stuff: http://shull24.com Also saw this on ARC: http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Rev3...Bradley/00.shtm CHEERS!
  20. Good News/Bad News: The good news is that I do have some good 1/72 Warthog 'cals (90% of my stuff is in 1/72 scale). The bad news is that they are for the Louisiana guys in the green, DESERT STORM jets (926th TFS?). Will consider a trade or something, if you want 'em.
  21. I've got some spare 'cals for 1/72 Warthogs in the stash. Will go check for this manyana.
  22. I've got an ALPS MD-1300 awaiting return from storage, whenever the computer gets some space allotted near the workbench. The 5000 is in a whole new league, so you probably won't have the same issues.
  23. Great rant, Gil! You've tapped into the difference between a hobby and a (less healthy) obsession. "Artistic License" is always my last, best maneuver. FWIW, my bud doing those R/C Mustangs is a good natured guy who likes his subjects that much and enjoys seeking out new, untried techniques in building each one. Will pass along the bits about the P-51 crews stripping off the paint.
