  1. I decided to start this kit to get my feet wet in the aircraft side of the hobby. I know it's probably not that accurate of a kit, but it caught my eye at the show and I figured I couldn't go wrong for the $2.00 I paid for it.

I am in the process of getting my model bench in order, but have begun cleaning up the various parts and will get pics posted most likely tomorrow evening. Should be a cool project as I've never built a helo before.

    Stay tuned for pics...

  2. I wanted to take the opportunity to send out a heartfelt "Thank You!!!" to Dave DeLang and Frank Baehre of the Champlain Valley IPMS Chapter. While at Noreastcon 40 last weekend I stopped by their table in the Vendor Hall and saw a stack of kits under their table. I was told by the gentleman attending to the table they were set aside for a guy named "Chris" from Glens Falls. We joked about it because that was where I am from and I saw a couple Israeli kits in the stack. I was specifically after any Israeli kits I could get and was disappointed when I was told the kits were already spoken for. I was told though if they guy didn't come to pick up the kits by the following day that I could purchase them.

Well, prior to the show I was in contact with a couple of members from this chapter and they said they might have some of the kits I was looking for. unbeknownst to me, the gentleman "Chris", we actually ME. Well, to make a long story short, I missed the chance to see if the kits were still available on Sunday and they got packed away. I found out last Sunday evening the kits had been set aside for me afterall and there was just a mistake in the name of the guy wanting them.

So, after e-mailing several members of the chapter during the week, the kits were found in various boxes and Frank made a special 3 hour trip yesterday to deliver said kits to me. Talk about one heck of an upstanding guy!!!! I was happy with the haul I made last weekend, but picking up these 3 kits were just icing on the cake. I got the Hasegawa 1/48th RF-4E and A-4 in Israeli markings. the third kit is just as sweet too. I got the 1/48th Academy F-14 "Bombcat" kit with the Verlinden update and detail set for it. It just don't get no better than that.

Again, thanks to everyone in that chapter for going through what they did to get me these kits. Simply awesome!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

  3. Thanks Ed. I appreciate the in depth list and info on the kits and decal options. I'll be honest, it's been frustrating because people have told me there are decals available for the 100th and yet noone seems to be able to tell me who made them or what kit they came in. The tailwork would be very hard to replicate due to the design of the crown and so forth across the top of the tail.

As popular as aircraft are in the U.K. you would think someone would have made these decals at some point in time...

  4. Just wondering if anyone might have a set of 1/72nd decals for the 100th ARW for the KC-135R tanker. Looking for at least one set if possible. Please let me know!

I have several sets of KC-135 decals. Do you know of any particular manufacturer and sheet that contains what you are looking for.

    David,

I don't know which aftermarket company made the decals. From my understanding the re-issue KC-135R kit has decals to do tail number 0100 from the 100th ARW. I have been told there are aftermarket decals available, but n oone is 100% sure which company did them. The picture I attached shows the tail code and "Box D" artwork...Hope this helps...

  5. Thanks Doug. I will be around alot more, that's for sure. I appreciate the compliments about my work as well. I was humbled when I walked in and saw what had one and how high they had placed. I never considered my work to be of the caliber that I saw this past weekend, that's for sure.

Even though i enjoy my automotive projects, my passion for building those subjects has waned considerably. Hence, the reason I'm branching out into the armor and aircraft section of the hobby. I do know it will be a very long time before my work on those subjects will be of the caliber I saw this weekend, that's for sure. Simply beautiful work all the way around!

  6. We called about reservations a couple weeks ago Nick. Yes, we did use the code and we were told that was the discounted price. Normal price for one room was $185 per night. I actually called a second time to make sure and it was the same price both times we called. My wife called the first time I called the 2nd time.

  7. I completely agree with you Gil. One thing we hated was having to drive 2 and half hours each way both Friday and Saturday. But, when we tried to make reservations at the host hotel, we were given a "discounted" price of almost $170 for ONE NIGHT!!!! :smiley22: Could we have paid the price and stayed the one night? Sure we could. But, if we did, then we would have no money to eat, spend in the vendor area, etc. It's all a matter of choices really.

We used to make the annual pilgrimage to the NNL East every April. However, over the past 3 years, the money just hasn't been there to support the event. By the time you pay for 2 night's hotel stay, food for 3 days total, gas and tolls to make the trip, it adds up really quick.

As much as we hate to say it, this economy IS having an effect on this hobby and it's not a good one. People just don't have the money to make the long trips and the clubs aren't making the money needed to host events in more convenient locations, if at all. This is the first show I've been to in 4 years. I miss the comraderie of attending these events and I truly enjoyed the time I was able to spend this past weekend getting to see some unbelievable work and meeting some great hobbyists. I know I will make every conscious effort to ensure this event continues to be held and that we keep the attendance close to where it is, if not better.

  8. Nick,

I honestly did enjoy the show and I will say I was extremely humbled by being recognized for my efforts in the hobby. People always told me if you manage to win in an IPMS sponsored event, you have hit the "big time" and are "playing with the big boys". I was actually numb when i went in to collect my models and found out my work had been recognized they way it had. I also got a TON of inspiration from seeing the unbelievable work on the tables and can't wait to get out of my comfort zone and tackle subjects that are totally new to me.

One huge regret I had was not having the foresight to get tickets to the banquet beforehand. Hard lesson learned and I will not make that mistake again. My membership has been sent in to join the Society and I look forward to making many new friends and getting to know the local IPMS members better in the future.

On a sidenote, when I went to the show this weekend, I could count the number of aircraft and armor kits I owned on one hand. As the following images can attest, you can see i enhanced my aircraft and armor collection just a tad thanks to the great prices and selection at the show.

  9. I thought I'd redo this post to include my experience from the past 2 days. I made the trip yesterday afternoon to register for this show and get my projects on the table. I also made my round through the vendro market as well to see what good bargains I might find before the big crowds hit. I was somewhat surprised at the number, or lack thereof, of entries I saw yesterday. I guess for some reason I expected a huge throng of modelers to be buzzing around and fighting for space on the tables to display their models.

I will say that every IPMS staff member I dealt with both days was more then welcoming and I was indeed pleased and felt much more comfortable the more time I spent there with everyone. I was worried I might be snubbed, if you will, for not being an IPMS member but if anything, I feel I was welcomed even more and it went a very long way in persuading me to join the IPMS family of modelers.

After displaying my models last night and making my rounds through the vendor room, I called it a night and we made the trek back home. We went back down today and I was pleasantly surprised to see many more models, especially aircraft and armor filling the tables. I spent a few hours examining all the various projects on display, paying particular attention to the aircraft and armor kits as I will be expanding my horizons into these subjects. While there was still alot of empty space on the tables, the models that were on display were stunning to view. The weathering, accuracy and detail was simply amazing and I can only hope when I start building these subjects I do half as good a job as I saw today.

To sum up the past two days, I can say it was a very pleasurable experience and I found it very enjoyable. Only one thing I regret is that there weren't more models on the tables as I expected. I am hoping the next IPMS event that is held by the local chapter brings more participants. The inspiration I got this weekend seeing this work is something i've needed for quite some time to earnestly get back into the hobby.

I want to thank the Northeast New York IPMS Chapter for putting on a 1st rate show and also for showing great hospitality and making my family and myself feel welcome. I will definitely be joining the IPMS ranks this coming week.

I am in the process of uploading 265 pics from this weekend's show and will post the link once the images are uploaded. Stay tuned...

  10. That is one impressive kit when it's done, that's for sure. WOW!!!!!!! :smiley29: I have a TON of learning to do before I tackle this project, that's for sure. You don't realize how big this thing is until you see it built up. I wouldn't mind even picking up a second kit if i can find one at a reasonable price.

That builder did one heck of a job on that kit, that's for sure. Thanks for sharing the link.

  11. Brian __ I also have a Paasche VL, use it all the time. I had similar issues with mine. I have no idea what the problem was, but I sent it to Paasche, they fixed it and sent it back, no charge. I would suggest you do likewise. I also have the Badger 150 that was mentioned, and yes it's also a dual action, and if anyone wants it, let me know. I don't particularly like Badgers, so......

I'd be interested in trying the Badger. PM me off the boards with specifics when you get a chance...

  12. Your kit sounds to be in the same condition as mine Ed. My decal sheet only has Russia and Iraq though, I believe. I will build this project someday, but only after i gain a TON of experience building armor kits. This will definitely test my abilities and I want to make sure I don't screw it up.

  13. This past weekend my better half happened to stop at a tag sale and found a model kit of the SCUD Missle Launcher from Dragon. It's in 1/35th scale and seems to be a pretty impressive kit with a lot of parts. has anyone built this kit and is there any decent reference sites for this subject?

I would like to paint and decal it to replicate an Iraqi unit from Desert Storm as it does have Iraqi decals in the kit. The kit appears to be complete and she only paid $5.00 for it so she thought she got a good deal for me. She found a couple other kits as well at the sale. She grabbed me a Tamiya Humvee kit and an M1A1 Abrams with a mone plow attachment. She paid a total of $20 for all the kits.

What's y'all's take on these kits? I'm especially interested in the SCUD Missle kit as I haven't seen one before and it looks like a really cool kit to build. Any tips or ideas and links would be greatly appreciated...

  14. I appreciate the info and pointers. Chris, I will be going to the show next weekend. I was kina hoping to be ther both Friday and Saturday, but it looks like i may only be able to make it on Saturday. I am hoping to score some decent deals in the vendor area if possible. Not sure how many vendors will be there or waht the prices will be like so I guess we'll have to see on that front. I am still debating on whether oo not to actually enter any of my builds at this point.

Bob, having spent many years working on the -R Model -135, I can attest that they are kept pretty clean. I spent many a day in the wash rack cleaning those big birds and I

m not afraid to admit when I got home at night, my arms were sore from the scrubbing and cleaning. I notice there don't seem to be many big plane modelers as well. I guess the size of the completed kits tend to turn some builders off from building them, but I enjoy modeling the aircraft I worked on during my military career. I personally always liked the "Shamu' scheme of dark gray over light gray that was used in the 80's and 90's. I'm still searching for an -R model tanker though so we'll see what happens...

  15. These projects look good so far. I built a Merkava Mk III a few years ago but it's nothing comapred to the projects I'm seeing here. I love building Israeli armor and aircraft. They are by far some of my favorite subjects. I need to find some good reference material for both armor and aircraft for that country.

  16. Holy cow Mark, that is a great looking Gunship. Is that painted in overall Gunship Gray? I was station at Hurlburt and worked on the MC-130E's while I was there and always enjoyed watching the gunships over the range and the sounds of those cannons going off could never be mistaken.

How long did it take for you to build that kit? Did you run into any serious fit or assembly issues?

  17. Thanks Buck. I have contacted Paasche and am still waiting for a response. I have totally dismantled this unit several times and soaked in in DuPont laquer thinner and all to no avail. Maybe I can send it to the factory and have them refurb it, I don't know yet. I may try calling them today rather than waiting for an e-mail. I do like the brush and the times I've used it in the past I had great results, even though I hated the time it took to clean it up after using it.

Let's face it, there aren't many aircraft painted in single colors now so I realistically am at a standstill in building any aircraft until I remedy this situation...

  18. Just a quick note...after totally disassembling the airbrush and making sure all is in order, I still have an airbrush that does not even spray water. I am relegating myself to the fact I will most likely be investing in a new airbrush in the very near future. My pending aircraft and armor kits will have to wait until I can afford a new airbrush as there is now ay i can get a good, accurate finish on these kits without a dependable airbrush. Now to decide which airbrush to purchase. I sure I get one that lasts longer than this one did. :(

  19. I have tried spraying clear thinner and water through the brush with no luck. When I cover the nozzle, I get bubbles in the cup. This unit uses either a siphon cup or gravity feed and neither work. I have dismantled this unit several times and have yet to find out what the issue is.
