  1. Well … Kyle has restarted his work on my USS ESSEX, CV-9 in her 1944 configuration.  He has painted the hull … this is what he has said …

“I ordered some liquid masking on Sunday, to start to tackle the Essex color scheme, will keep you updated I’d like to get back on it soon.  A little touch up to do where lines of tape overlapped each other but nothing too bad. Next up will be getting the armament and other little parts in and masking and painting the island.”

Here some photos of the build …

  2. Hi …

Some of you have been asking me what Kyle Lord has been doing on my USS ESSEX model that I bought from Art Rohloff via STEELNAVY last year.  Kyle bought a house late last year and he finished four plane kits for me, a T-33, F-106A, a F4-U1D and a repair job on a Sea Hurricane MK. IIc.  Last week, he got back to work on my USS ESSEX again.  He started by gluing the missing pieces onto the bow and stern. A few more pieces to go then the deck can go on pretty soon. I also plan to progress on the island.  He also attached the gun emplacements onto the deck. I also got 3 out of 4 prop shafts on, for some reason the fourth one isn’t long enough so he’ll find a piece of styrene rod and extend it. The deck has not been glued in yet, it’s just there for mock up purposes. He plans to paint the deck before attaching it to the hull.   Up next will be painting the hull red and priming the deck and spraying the deck Blue.

He said, Bottom paint is on, it’s Tamiya Hull Red with a couple drops of white, as the hull red is really a dark brown. The island is primed and ready for deck blue on the horizontal surfaces.  Up next I will be masking the red, then priming the remainder of the hull and the deck in preparation to do a run of deck Blue.

    Here are some photos:

The model looks pretty nice overall.

Now get to work cutting pieces off and showing us what it looks like all together.

Wild Bill,  I am THINKING about having Kyle do that ...............................

  4. Ed Sexton of Revell sent me the parts for the new 1:72 PT-109 kit, and these are my impressions of it.  A disclaimer, these are just my impressions of it, take them in the spirit in which they're offered.  This isn’t your father’s or your grandfather’s PT-109 from the 1960s.  This is an all new tooled kit.  The hull now comes in three pieces, the two sides of the hull and the bottom of the hull, rather than the one-piece hull from the original 1960s-vintage kit.  The deck does not have the rather over-done engraved planking which the original kit featured.  In fact, the new deck piece is totally smooth.  A bit too smooth if one were to ask me.  Unlike the original kit, this incarnation does not have the cockpit/charthouse/forward turret section already molded on the deck.  I have seen comments on the Internet that the shape of the hull of the model depicted on Revell of Germany’s website looks wrong and looks like the hull which is associated with the old Lindberg PT-109 kit.  As soon as the hull halves were removed from the bag, one of the halves was placed on to the side of the hull of my built-up model of PT-174, built by the late Alex Johnson.  It was an exact match!  Alex always said that the shape of the hull of the old Revell PT-109 kit was accurate, he used that kit to my PT-174.  So, modelers should not have an issue with the shape of the hull of the re-tooled kit.
That is because this section of the kit has been reimagined and redone.  This time, Revell includes an option for two interiors, one in the charthouse, and the other in the Dayroom cabin, aft of the cockpit.  It has been stated on the Internet that the interiors seen in photos on Revell of Germany’s website appear to be chunky/clunky and out of scale.  From what I have seen on the sprues of the kit, both interiors are not out of scale, although, I will admit that the charthouse interior does look a bit chunky and clunky, and lacking some detail.  But, I am sure that, any modeler worth his salt could enhance that area.   The interior of the Dayroom cabin looks to be well-done.  And, additionally, on some of the bulkheads, modelers will notice framing which has been engraved on those pieces.  I think it is well done.
Regarding the new kit’s torpedo tubes; I do like the new torpedo tubes and their separate bracing and training gear.  Although it does appear to be a little simplistic.  The webbing on the back-end of the tubes is a nice addition but does appear to be a "bit" thick. The twin .50s are better than the ones from 1960s kit - but still are a little bland in detail.  The 20mm Oerlikon gun is a lot better than the one from the 1960s kit.  Two Type C, 300-pound depth charges with their corresponding roll-off racks are included as well.  We do know that the 109 was fitted with two depth charges, located on each side of her foredeck, near the charthouse.  However, Kennedy had a minor collision with an American Destroyer as the 109 was attempting to retrieve a pump for another PT.  One depth charge was knocked through the deck and landed on a crewman’s bunk, it is unclear if that depth charge and its rack was replaced at the time of the 109’s loss.
The Carley Float/life raft is marginally better than the one from the 1960s kit and lacks detail.  I feel the webbing/floor is too thick.  Revell is including the needed parts for the 109’s 37mm M3 anti-tank field piece which Kennedy had mounted on some 4X8s and lashed down on the foredeck, if modelers wish to depict the 109 on the day of her loss.  A nice touch.
I like how they now have included the canvas "dodger" for the aft turret.  I also the new turret ring mountings.  They are way better than the originals. And, I liked how a clear plastic windshield is provided although, once reaching the war zone - they were replaced with armor plates.  The mufflers are molded separately this time around, and they look a lot better than the originals, but the corresponding linkages appear to be a bit clunky and simplistic.
    Nice job overall though.

  5. Hi Guys,

    Hey, listen, ...

Back in the 90s, I bought the Revell 1:100 F-14 TOMCAT. My father was putting it together for me before his arthritis got REALLY bad and before he got cancer and then, he stopped and it was put down in our basement and on our version of the shelf of doom. The model is basically put entirely together - all it needs are the afterburner "pans"/exhausts and the canopy. But, through the years - the parts for the model have been lost.

I have asked my builder, Kyle, if he'd finish it for me if I got the needed parts and the decals. He has agreed to.

Now, would anyone here have the canopy and the afterburner "pans" that they're not going to use? I already wrote to Revell and they don't stock parts that old ... can you please help?

I figure I can get that 1:100 missile set off Shapeways ...

And, would any of you know if anyone makes after-market decals for F-14s in 1:100? I'd like to have it finished as MISS MOLLY.

    Tim

  6. Hi All,

Hey, back in 1992, after THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER came out ... my brother bought and built the Revell kit of the USS DALLAS (C'mon Big D, Fly!) ... But it was never painted or decaled. I still have the model, intact. Kyle Lord, who has recently built the Merit G-5, the Revell 1:144 FLOWER Class Corvette plus a few airplanes for me, is going to paint it for me.

Does anyone here remember if that was a 1:700 kit (I seem to remember that scale being on the box)? And, if so, do any of you have those decals, or 1:700 decals for a 688 LOS ANGELES Class fast attack sub that you're not going to use that I can buy off ya?

    Thanks,

    Tim

  7. Hi Guys,

Kyle has sent me some in-progress shots of all three projects, and here they are:

The gear is painted silver, but, if memory serves, on the real Dart, they were white, he says he’ll correct that.

Here are some of the many shots of the T-33 build. He says it’s all-but done, just the canopy needs to be glued down.

And, lastly – the “surprise” F4-U-1D build; it’s being finished as Boyington’s #86 “Lulubelle” (I’ve heard it was actually “Lucybelle, I don’t know). After Kyle told me that he was going to this build for me as a surprise; I tried to track down the decal sheet which has Boyington’s #883”, but could only find it in 1:32. I wanted that one because he actually flew 883 … #86 was only used in that set of publicity shots.

Here are some of the many in-progress shots he has sent me.

  8. Hi Guys,

I have asked Kyle Lord to build me two kits. Both are 1:72. One is a F-106A Delta Dart and the other is a T-33 Shooting Star. Originally, I gave him the Hasegawa 1:72 F-106 kit and the Hasegawa 1:72 T-33 kit. He started both kits straight away. However, he found the Hasegawa F-106 kit lacking in detail, so he stopped work on it and ordered a Trumpeter 1:72 F-106 kit. I must say, that after seeing photos of the sprues, the Trumpeter kit definitely has more detail, especially in the area of the cockpit.

Both, the F-106 and the T-33 models will be finished in the markings of the 101st FIS of the 102nd FIW of the Massachusetts Air National Guard. The F-106 will wear the markings of “Alpha-Kilo one-one”, my good friend, (now retired LT. COL.) Art Bugbee often flew “one-one” (although “Alpha-Kilo one-four” was his personal mount while the 101st flew the Dart and had his name on it. But, there is no sheet out with markings for “one-four”, but there is a sheet with the markings for “one-one” and that’s the one I bought and mailed to Kyle this past week.

I was going to ask Mark of STARFIGHTER DECALS if he’d take the sheet he created in 1:48 for me of the markings of “one-four” (complete with Maj. A. J. Bugbee on it) and resize it to 1:72. A couple of years ago, I had Stan Pienkowski rebuild the old Revell/Monogram 1:48 F-106A that I built myself in 1984, and mark it up as Art’s “one-four” and gave it to Art. He loves it. He even has the windscreen from the real “one-four” sitting in his barn in New Hampshire. One day, in 1981 (when I was 21 and a first semester Junior at CCSU), Art got me some simulator time in the F-106 simulator they had on base. I thought that was so cool. Why? Because I’ve got Cerebral Palsy, and am confined in a motorized wheelchair. That meant/means I can’t/couldn’t serve in the military and fly fighters, or any plane for that matter. I shot down a TU-95 and a MiG-25. He also had me sit in on a mission briefing once too.

I sent Mark an email about it, but he did not and still hasn’t replied. That’s OK, inasmuch I found the sheet I’ve just mailed off to Kyle.

The T-33, well, that old bird holds a special meaning to me as well. There’s a photo of me from 1981 (that I can’t bloody well find – but I know still exists), the same day that I got my two “kills”, behind my parents’ 1979 Plymouth Voyager (the full-sized van, not the mini-van), wearing Art’s flight helmet, holding his flight jacket that he had just given me (and I still have and wear), the jacket had/has over 1,000 flight hours (all in the 106). In the photo, behind me, is the T-33 being prepped for a cross-country hop. Art has told me that he, and another 101st pilot, were trying to figure out a way to get me into the back-seat of the T-33, because the back-seat of the B-model of the 106 was too high off the ground to safely get me into.

Sadly, those plans never came to fruition – that would’ve been so cool! I can picture it; he and I flying from Cape Cod, back to Connecticut – to do a fly-over of my college girlfriend’s house in Ansonia. Oh, well. What’s that old saying? “The best-laid plans of mice and men …”

A few weeks ago, Kyle emailed me to tell me that he was going to build me a pro-bono kit. That is the Tamiya 1:72 F-4U-1D. I accepted his kind offer and said that I’d like it as the ‘883’ which Pappy Boyington (a childhood hero) is said to have flown. But, I haven’t been able to find 1:72 decals for it … I can find ‘em in 1:32 easy enough though ………………..

Here are some photos of the progress on all three kits by Kyle:

  9. Thanks Mark.

    Unfortunately, Kyle isn't a IPMS member ...

Yeah, Arthur's a guy ... he's now a farmer in New Hampshire. He attended my graduation (my Masters degree) back in May from SNHU. It was a honor having my wingman there.

The first day I met Art, he put me in a base pick up truck, an Air Force blue 1969 Dodge ... and took me out to the end of the runway to grade landings ... when the last guy was coming in - a Nam vet, former Phantom driver ... Art reached in back, grabbed a set of earphones and put them on me and got on the radio and said, "Alpha Kilo 1 - 8 ... looking good, and by the way, we have a guest." I looked out the driver's side window and saw the pitot tube of a 106 coming at the truck at about 10 feet off the ground ... it pulled up right over the truck ... WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another time - he got me some simulator time in the 106 simulator on the base. That was great. Shot down a MiG-21 and a TU-95 ...

He was trying to figure out how they could've gotten me up into either the back cockpit of a 106B or the T-33 ... But, ... neither worked out.

  10. Kyle Lord is doing two 1:72 plane kits for me at this time. Although – he’s off currently because they’re in the process of moving.

The two kits are by Hasegawa. And, like I said, they’re 1:72 … one is a T-33 SHOOTING STAR and the other one is a F-106A DELTA DART. Both are being done OOB. However, the T-33 will have after-market decals …

Luckily for me, the F-106 kit has decals for the 101st FIS of the 102nd FIW (of the Massachusetts Air National Guard when they were at Otis ANGB on Cape Cod. One of my best friends, Arthur Bugbee, was a pilot in that squadron, he flew the 106, the F-15 and before he retired – the C-12. Once – he went supersonic over Boston, and blew out windows in the Hancock building. He also flew a 106 through one of the “Hot Barns” during an air show (he got in trouble for that one). He also intercepted a few TU-95s over the years. He signed a photo of his 106, flying wing on a TU-95 Bear off Nantucket.

That picture and the flight jacket (with over 1,000 hours logged – all in the 106) he gave me are two of my most prized possessions. Two years ago – I had my 1:48 Monogram F-106 rebuilt, re-furbished and re-decaled (I had STARFIGHTER DECALS make me a sheet for his personal mount – call sign ALPHA KILO 1 – 4 … complete with his name and rank – then a major) and gave it to him on a base. He LOVES it.

Since then, I had been looking for a replacement for my collection, and decided to go with a 1:72 kit. And, once I saw this one on AMAZON, with the 101st’s markings, I grabbed it. Sure, it’s not Art’s personal mount, but I do have a personal connection to the one on the decal sheet. One morning in August 1981, Art was in it and he chased me and another pilot while we were in a base pick-up truck, around the field after his flight for the day was cancelled for fog on the way back to the flight-line … flashing the gear lights at us all the while … funny.

Tracy White gave me the kit of the T-33 as a gift and I bought a decal sheet for T-33s which has the 101st’s T-33. After Arthur got out of the plane and went through a debrief – he met me outside as I, in my wheelchair, was about to be put in my 1979 Plymouth Voyager van, plopped his flight helmet on my head and gave me his flight jacket. There’s a picture of me in the flight helmet in front of the fence gate with the T-33 sitting on the flight-line behind me. Great memory. That photo helped me ‘win the heart’ of the girl I dated in college. I wish I could find that picture …

  11. Kyle is delivering them tomorrow. He'll take back my 1:72 F-106A and 1:72 T-33. The F-106 is a Hasegawa, the one with the markings for the 101st FIS, the T-33 ... I forget what it is, but I bought a decal sheet for the T-33 squadron hack from the 101st FIS. Two of my best friends flew 106s and 15s in the 101st FIS.

A couple of years ago, 2013, I had my Monogram 1:48 106 broken down, rebuilt, repainted and re-decaled in the markings of "Alpha Kilo one-four" (my friend's personal mount - he was the squadron's operations officer) complete with his name under the canopy and gave it to him. He loves it!

Here are the P-47 and P-40:
