This is the second book about Portuguese forces that I have read, authored by José Augusto Matos (he co-authored Sanctuary Lost, Portugal’s Air War for Guinea 1961-1974, Volume 1, with Matthew M. Hurley, reviewed here: https://reviews.ipmsusa.org/review/sanctuary-lost-portugals-air-war-guinea-1961-1974-volume-1). Having read both books, I now better understand the author’s style and attention to detail. This is Zelia Oliveira’s first book in the series. As the title states, this book is the road to the Portuguese Coup of 1974 and covers primarily the period from 1961 to 12 March 1974 in amazing detail (there are ten pages of sources, bibliography, and notes).

Italeri has brought out the long awaited 1/32 scale Macchi MC.202 Folgore (Italian for Thunderbolt) just in time for the 100th anniversary of the Regia Aeronautica (RA; Royal Italian Air Force). The MC.202 was a development of the earlier C.200 Saetta, which was a radial engine design. The MC.202 used the Italian built version of the German Daimler-Benz DB 601A engine and a redesigned more streamlined fuselage. Considered to be one of the best wartime fighters to serve in large numbers with the Regia Aeronautica, the Folgore served on all fronts the Italians operated in.

The FW-190, or Butcher Bird, is quite a fascinating aircraft, fast, robust and extremely versatile. This aircraft served from its development in 1941 right through the end of the war. It continued to evolve from just a fighter to a ground attack and a night fighter. It seemed to develop over the war from short and stubby to sleek and sexy in the form of the D-9 and Ta-152. This book concentrates on the short nosed radial engine versions from the V-1 prototype to the A-9 and S-8.

This is a re-boxing of the Two Bobs kit first released in 2009. Special Hobby has since issued three versions. In this the “Anniversary Markings”, version we get a US Navy bird celebrating the American Bicentennial and a Greek AF, T-2 marked to commemorate 40 years of service with that organization. The T-2 first flew in 1958 and was the backbone of the Navies jet training syllabus till its replacement in 2008. The Hellenic or Greek AF received a total of 40 T-2Es and is just now in the process of phasing the last out of service. Venezuela also used this venerable trainer. In total 609 were built giving thousands of military aviators their first experience of jet flight.

Hauler-Brengun from The Czech Republic produces some of the finest aftermarket resin parts and model kits in the industry. The wheels in this set were no exception.
Brengun’s packaging was very good, with the contents contained within a clear plastic bag and a hard cardboard backing. There were no instructions included in this set, but none were needed.
These resin wheels would fit any 1/144 scale BF-109K kit, and just needed holes drilled to mount on to the kit axel. Two complete sets of main wheels and tail wheels were included. They were nicely cast with petite, slightly soft, tire and wheel detail. The main tires included a flat spot, but no tread pattern (unless these tires didn’t have a tread pattern anyway). In this scale I could not see this as being an issue.

Cross & Cockade International is a non-profit UK-based group known as the First World War Aviation Historical Society that publishes their journal four times a year. Issues are available as printed as well as digital copies (or both). They also provide a free newsletter (sign up on their website) and occasionally publish WWI themed books like the Sopwith Dolphin monograph I reviewed earlier for IPMS USA. This Journal is the sister of the US Journal, Over The Front.

Although not as famous as the U.S. Army’s GMC CCKW ‘Deuce-and-a-half’ the Studebaker US6 trucks were historically important trucks in their own right. Over 200,000 were built by Studebaker and Reo, with the vast majority of these trucks provided as ‘Lend-Lease’ to the Soviet Union and other allies. Although not ‘standard’ in the U.S. Army, many trucks were used by the U.S. Army Corps of engineers and transportation units in building and using supply routes such as the Alaska-Canada Highway, the Ledo Road from India to China, and the Persian Corridor from the Persian Gulf to the Soviet Union. This set spans the entire war and provides a useful palette of paints for armor or vehicles serving in the desert. ICM provides a diagram on the back of the package showing two vehicle profiles (corresponding to ICM kits of their s.E.Pkw Kfz.70 with Zwillingssockel 36 and Sd.Kfz.251/8 Ausf.A WWII German Ambulance) with painting colors for the featured schemes.

Tools are ubiquitous with armored vehicles, especially tanks. For those braille scale modelers who wish to have separate tools and brackets, this is the set for you for to replace the molded-on tools that come on a majority of the German armor models.
The tools are very tiny and well detailed.The instructions are simple, which is great as this set is an eye exam and will test your patience as you assemble the PE. Fortunately, Hauler recognizes the very real carpet monster and provides extra PE parts.Once assembled, the following PE parts become spares:

A new resin detail set from Brengun to add or replace 1/72nd scale 150 gallon drop tanks for the USN/USMC aircraft for WWII/Korea era.
In The Box
There are two resin poured drop tanks and a photoetched brass sheet inside the packaging. Paper instruction is printed on one side and very well illustrated.
Review Process
The process starts out by cutting away the pour stubs from the drop tanks. This was done with a seam scrapper and hobby knife. Once separated, I wet sanded the attached areas to reduce any airborne resin dust. Next, I washed both drop tanks in a bath of warm water with dishwash soap and used an old toothbrush to scrub away any mold release agent that may be left on the surface.

I’ve read a number of books about 20th-century so-called brush wars, and it becomes fairly obvious over time that these small, relatively isolated conflicts often serve as relief valves for larger nations who dare not directly confront each other. In the nuclear age, such aggressiveness would almost certainly be fatal.

Helion is a UK-based company that produces books on many aspects of Military History from the Late Medieval period through to the present day. Helion was established in 1996, and since then they have published over 1,200 books, with 100 or more new titles coming out every year, for readers around the world.

F-Toys/Platz have been producing small-scale (1/144th) aircraft kits for a few days now and originally released their F-16 kit in 2015. This latest iteration has new parts and decals that will allow you to build an F-16C with conformal fuel tanks. The new parts, in a soft resin, are those tanks and decals for a test bed aircraft stationed at Eglin AFB circa 2001 and another assigned to the 14th Fighter Squadron at Misawa AFB, Japan.
The kit comes in an open-ended box with some extra bits that will allow you to build several different configurations should you so choose. At the very least you will have some excellent parts (various under-wing stores) for the spares box. There is even a pilot figure. Another nice addition is an alternative vertical stabilizer with the braking parachute housing.

Human beings sure like to squabble, and the more history they share, the more enmity they seem to feel. America is little over 200 years old, and has had only one internal conflict during that time, and yet it still impacts the country to this day. Imagine, then, a region occupied for millenia2, and the potential only increases.

Ian Baxter has done it again. Not only is he an amazing, captivating author, he once more approached a very difficult topic, and did it well, presenting the horrifying facts in a manner that honors the dead, but doesn’t sugar coat it. This book follows the familiar Images of War format with brief introductions for each chapter followed by a lot of photographs to complement his topics.
Between the covers of this (9.6”x7.4”) paperback book are 144 pages, with over 250 black and white photographs, and two very detailed appendices, is the story of the Liberation of Nazi Concentration Camps during 1944 and 1945. It is composed of the following:

Brief History--From Wikipedia
The Go 244 was the powered version of the Gotha Go 242 military glider transport. Studies for powered versions of the Go 242 began early in the design of the glider, with one early proposal being for modification to allow a single Argus As 10C engine to be temporarily attached to the nose of the glider to allow recovery back to base after use. This idea was rejected, but the alternative of a permanently powered twin-engine version was taken forward.
