  1. There are a few others with some model themes. 1. Mr Destiny [1990] stars James Belushi as Larry Borrows, married to Ellen [played by Linda Hamilton]. Larry is a regular guy who thinks his life stinks and wants something better. He gets his wish and in a "It's a wonderful life" way he sees he has a great life. He is is building Model Cars in some earlier scenes and in one of the best scenes he is sitting in a huge mansion in almost emtpy room building Model Cars! 2. Diary of a Wimpy Kid - Has one neat scene when the family comes home and his father is building a model on a tiny TV tray that has been cleverly converted into a complete hobby work bench, the best part is that he is wearing a Optivisor and continues to wear it through several scenes. Audience gets big laugh at expense of Modelers everywhere! However if you get a chance ti see it the TV tray workshop is a work of art!
  2. This is a work of art! We see these once in awhile here in San Diego at the Beach. Dan King
  3. Noel - Welcome to the Forum. Like you I am fairly new at this, but have been enjoying it. I visited Manila in March 1969 on the way to Vietnam and again in Feb 1970 for Jungle Survival School Escape and Evade [E&E] training at Subic Bay. The Philippines is a beatiful country with friendly people and great food! At E&E training they dropped us into the jungle and we were supposed to evade Philippine Marines , that was a laugh as far as I know absolutly No One ever excaped them! On that trip I mostly ate bugs and rodent's, not exactly best Phillipine food I ever had. Another thing I really liked was all the Jeep's, they were everywhere and all very well taken care of. In later years I was into Off Road Racing and considered getting a all Stainless Steel Jeep manufactured in the Philippines to turn into an off road racer. After looking at all the costs I decided not to do that! Anyway welcome aboard and hope to see more of you work. Dan King
  4. Bob - A good friend of mine was a B-24 Bombardier and is attending the 8th Air Force Historical Society Reunion in St. Louis Mo. It will be at the Sheraton Westport, Lakeside Chalet from Oct 11 to 16th. There web site has a wealth of info on it including a place you can ask questions of the Hisorical Society. Dan King
  5. Bob - I do not know the Specific answer to this, but I have a few suggestions. During WW-2 a number of cities and orginasation sponsored Aircraft Builds in their names. These were ussually Bomber's and almost all of them were B-24 and few B-17's [ B-17 were considerably more expensive]. You might want to search of B-24/B-17 crew web sites and post this question. I also think there is a B-24 Orginization for both crew and factory workers. The 8th Airforce Reunion is coming up in St Louis soon and you can check thier web site, if you are close you could visit and talk to some of these amazing guys! Dan King
  6. Very good photo's! I talked to my friend Gary Davis yesterday and he was attending this show on 9/17 while I was visiting my brother in Olympia , Wa. I should check the events schedule more carefully, it is a fairly quick drive down to McVinville. Gary had a few cars intered into this contest, The blue Midget on Trailer and #54 Mercury racer. I think he did fairly well on Awards! Dan King
  7. Dennis - Thank you for your explination. It is sometimes hard to know what is "acceptable" on this site, I have seen some pretty wild things! But I will always make every effort to not have an incedent. Dan King
  8. Dear Forum Administrator.- I notice that I have a "Warn Status Bar" under my name when I post. There is no "warning" on it just the status bar. What is this and why is it on my posts, I have not seen it on any one else's post? Dan King
  9. Gil - In regards to my Photo "Best Dressed Pilot" and how we "straddle yer guns". We straddled them like that because in a Huey we sat in Ceramic Armoured Seats tht protected us from the sides, back and bottom but not from the front. So we wore our Model 38 Liberty Speacial .38 caliber pistols as "Nut" protectors! We normally also attached "Pen flares" to the holster in case we had to E&E [Excape and Evade] as many did. We had 2 guys in our unit that did not think 38's were "Manly" enough so they had famely send them Colt 45's with holsters to use. They both wore them on same day that turned into 14 hour flying day with lots of rough weather flying, Combat Assualts under fire, the whole works. The next day both guys could barly walk! the weight of a fully loaded Colt 45 bouncing around on such a sensitive spot for 14 hours was too much to bare! Last time they ever used them. I did not fly Loach's so am not sure if they had Armoured seats or not? In any case the seats were also to tight to wear pistols on the side. Incedently all Army Helocopter Pilots admired the Bravery and Guts shone by Loach pilots in Vietnam, They were truly a Special breed of Lunitic that did stuff that Huey Pilots would never dream of doing! Dan King
  10. Michael - I very much enjoyed your Photo's from Vietnam. I as also a Army Warrant Officer and served in Vietnam for 18 months in 1969 and 70. I was with the 240th AHC at Bearcat and was a Huey UH-1 D/H Slick Aircraft Commander, call sign "Greyhound 10. I also did a short stint flying with the "Maddogs" as well as Lead and C&C. In Mid 70 I was sent to Qui Nhon on TDS and special training, I also spent a little time at Phu Cat. I was stationed at Fort Carson after Vietnam with the 283rd AHC. We trained to do Urban Combat Assualt's into Denver in case the Anti-War Peace Protesters decided to burn the city down? and yes we did understand the Irony! After getting Rif-ed out of Army in 1972 [ 4 months short of my 6 year requirement] I bounced around doing odd flying jobs and in 1973 got a job with the South Vietnamese Air Force as a contract pilot. I was in Soc Trang when all American Military units exept Macv and Embassy Guards left Vietnam! Boy do I have some strange stories that came out of that. Here is a photo of me at Bearcat that I call "Best Dressed Pilot". Dan King , Greyhound 10, Vtn 1969/70 and 73.
  11. Jay - That is a great model build and a great subject! Do you know what scale the orginal "toy" was? I do my own Vacuum-Forming and know how difficult it is to get it looking as good as you have done on this model. I am also interested on what you used for your referance material? I have seen several photo's of 'The Bluebird" but never with the engine cowling off. Dan King
  12. Phil - This was my 6th time to GSL. I started at the last one they did yearly, GSL #15, then they went to every other year with this year number 23. The best way to get info about the contest is to get on thier email or snail mail list. Go to "The Model Car Builders Museum" web site and follow the prompts. The GSL also has their own web site as well with lots of photo's and info. My wife always goes with me to this event as we both really like visiting Salt Lake City. We stay at the event Hotel, The downtown Sheraton so we are close to everything. We drive from San Diego with a stop at Saint George utah so it is not such a long Drive. The event starts on Thursday and goes through Sunday when they have the Awards Banquet. The have 2 or 3 Seminars or workshops each day. One of the Highlights is a full tour of the Model Car Builders Museum. The place has a lot of very unique and historical items from the past. it has the largest referance library for Model Cars that you can imagine! On Saturday night they do a Auction to raise money for the Museum with all the items donated. There are many unique items to bid on. On Saturday morning is a Swap meet that is only open a few hours, so bring lots of money and if you see something you want buy it immediatly because when you come back around it will probably be gone! We normaly add an additionial trip to this event and this year we went up tp Park City for a few days and then on to Bear Lake in the North East corner of Utah. Park City was expensive and Bear Lake is probably one of the most scenic places we have ever been. Dan king
  13. Here are some of the photo's I took at The Greater Salt Lake Internationial Model Car Contest. I know that this is a few months late, but I just downloaded to Photobucket and just figured out how to do the url [ see my Batmoble under Sci Fi forum]. I made a few comments on some photo's so you will understand what is going on. Please notice the photo of Tom Danials doing his presentation on his history with Designing Model Car Kits. He says that he may be able to do some more in the future! I sure hope that Revell follow's up on this as his design's are truly classic. http://s1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/greyhound10/
  14. Hopefully here is Photobucket url? http://s1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/greyhound10/Batmobile/
  15. Gary - Is this the same Gary Davis from Tacoma that I met at the Greater Salt Lake Internationial Model Car Contest? We had some very good talks about Car Modeling and the Army over a few Brews that I really enjoyed! One thing we talked about was Atomic Annie Army Cannon. I understand that Revell is to release the old Renwall odd scale kit of this incredible gun. I got your phone call message on Saturday but I have not been able to call back. My Father-in-Law passed away and we have been busy with that. Welcome to the IPMS and this web site and look forward to talking and seeing you again. Dan King
  16. This is only letting me load one at a time. i do not know what I am doing wrong? Dan King
  17. Here are a few photo's of my latest Project. This is the Batmobile from the 1989[?] Batman Movie staring Micheal Keaton. This is my favorate Batman Movie due to Jack Nicolson's performance as the Joker. the model was bought in 1989 and over several years I purchased or scrounged some additionial items to build this in the way I wanted. Fast forward to 2011 when I needed a project for one of our June San Diego Model Car Club [sDMCC] theme nights - "Been in a Movie". I also used this project as a painting experement to lear to do Panel Fades and Candies. Modifications - I always felt that the Batmobile lacked Firepower to the "six" compared to the dual Ma Duece's in the front! So I used a couple of Verlinden Supertech .30 Cal Browning Machine guns. This requred building a pop open compartment in the base of the rear "wings" and making slide out mounts for the guns. The 30 cals are full kits that require a lot of Photoetch bending of very small parts. I also added "control arms" in the rather plain cockpit to be able to aim the rear guns using a TV display under the dash. I also changed the way that the cockpits opens by creating a top hinge instead of the slide forward method. In addition I placed a real tri hook as the grapple instead of the plasic one in the kit. I also opened up the side Scoops for the Afterburner and added Silver Perforated material in the openings in the scoop above the Cockpit and the sides. The paint was the main reason for doing this. I first did usual clean-up of all the seams, sink marks etc, although this kit does not have much of this. The then sprayed Flat white as a primer, after sanding with 1000 grit pad I masked around all openings such as the forward and rear gun compartments and Grappel compartment and then sprayed them with flat Red. This is where I had 1st problem. I did not mask well and a lot of read seeped under into the white primer! I tried to just sand off the red and just turned it Pink! i finally sanded down those areas to black plastic and re shot with flat white. I then sprayed Testors Silver overall. After Silver dryed I used my Airbrush to spray Tamya gloss black around all the edges or recesses. Then it was time for Testers Transparent Blue using the Airbrush. Normally when spraying Candies/ Transparent paint you want to count the even coats so your coverage is uniform on all panels. I intentionally did not do this, I randomly sprayed coats in uneven way to get dark and lighter areas. This worked better than expected and I will try this again on a more "serious" project. I had a lot of fun building this and the base for it and I did win the "Best theme Night" vote in the club [ no prize, but a nice applause1]. As usual I need to clear some other photo's off other post before I can post these photo's , I will do this shortly. Dan King
  18. Phil - Very nicely done cobra! I have difficult time getting my canopies done that cleanly. The Monogram Cobra is a good model of early G models. The turret is the dual Minigun and 40mm Grenade Launcher version that we used. Monogram seems to rerelase these about every 3 or 4 years, so it's about time they did it again. Dan K.
  19. John - My friend Chuck sent me a few photo's of the B-17 flyover of our local Military Cemetery's in Don Stulls honor. Don was a Navigator on B-17's with the 8th Airforce, 92nd Bomber Group,327 Squadron. His plane was damaged over Peeneumunde Germany in August 1942 and they made it to Sweden and were interned. Don was long time member of CAF and was involved with "Sentimental Journey" that was here for Wings Over gillespie event. Some members of his family, plus representitives from DFC Society and Pow Society were also aboard. I attended the funeral at Fort Rosecrans that you see in one of the photo's. Don would often sit with me and my wife at DFC events and tell us great stories about flying Bomber missions over Germany in B-17's. He always showed a lot of interest in the Helicopters that I flew and talked about "Rumors" of Nazi Helicopers in WW2! Dan K.
  20. Just a quick Correction on the San Diego Model Expo. There will be 10 Automotive Classes with several Automitive Special Awards. You can find info on the contest on the IPMS Nationial Home Page under "UPcoming Events". Dan King
  21. Just a quick note to remind everyone about the San Diego IPMS Model Expo Model Contest coming up this Saturday June 4th. it will be held at the San Diego Air & Space Museum Annex at Gillespie Field in El Cajon California. This contest also includes a large Model Swap Meet put on by the Air & Space Museum. New this year is The San Diego Model Car Club/IPMS is also participating in this Contest. As a result There will about 15 Model Car Classes in the Contest. So if you are a Model Car builder this would be a great event to attend. In addition The Wings Over Gillespie Airshow is being held the same weekend, so you can see the Airshow from the Model Expo or go around to the other side of Gillespie Field and see all the Aircraft Exibits. You can get more info about this event at the San Diego IPMS web site located on the Clubs listing of the IPMS main web page. Hope to see many of you there. Dan King, Greyhound 10, Vietnam 69/70/73, IPMS San Diego Club Member and San Diego Model Car Club Member.
  22. John - You had mentioned a B-17 flying into visit your Museum. I attended a funeral today for Mr. Don Stull who was a Navagator on B-17's. Don flew 32 missions over Germany for the 8th Airforce and was badly shot-up on his last mission in 1944. They were able to make it to Sweden before the Aircraft gave out and they had to Bailout. He was Interned by the Swedish Goverment for the rest of the war! The services were at Ft. Rosecrans Nationial Cemetary today and it was a brite sunny day with a unbeilivable view of North Island Navy base and downtown San Diego. A B-17 is here this week for the Wings over Gillespie Airshow and I understand that several of Don's Family Members got to fly in it as it made a pass over the Cemetary on Wed. Members of the VFW, DFC Society and POW Society were present for the services. It is unfortnate that so many men who flew these aircraft in WW-2 are leaving us. If you get a chance to meet and talk to one of these men it is worth your time to do so. Dan K.
  23. I had to delete these photo's to attach another photo to a post in Aircraft. I f anyone want to see these photo's or other photo's of the Motor Transport Museum let me know. I am still working on this model and have figured out how to do the Steering assembly with a little help from friends and some additionial ref. Dan K
