  1. Hi all - I had a chance to see this in person on Tuesday and I can honestly say it is one of the finest models I have ever looked at! Pete was talking about the models in The Joe Martin Craftsmanship Museum in Carlsbad CA. and he said he goes there for a helping of Humble. But I have also been to that museum a number of times and I think this model stacks up to any models in the museum in all the ways that count such as basic craftsmanship, scratchbuilding extra's and visual impact. Congrat's Pete on a job well done. Dan King
  2. Christopher- This might be a perfect time to try "The Hairspray Technique"! I have given it a try and it works fairly well, but- they are not kidding when they say to use cheapest Hairspray you can find. I tried some of my wife's and it turns out she buys the expensive type [ of coarse!]. I scrubbed and scrubbed on it and even submerged it and it would still not come off. I went and bought a can at our local $Dollar Store sprayed it on and put on the top coat then 1/2 hour later using a stiff bristle brush and lots of water started to scrub off certain sections. The cheap Hairspray caused it to come off in sheets! By experimenting with times, brushes and amount of water I found it worked fairly well. Also I have tried a number of different weathering methods and products and I think that a Rust-All kit from MicroMark is still the best starting point for heavy weathering that you can get. It's cheap, works very well and lasts a long time. Good luck on your project.
  3. Gary - Great Job on this build! Last time I tried to do a ghost flame job on a model it was a mess. It was a 40 Ford Coupe and when I pulled off the masking tape for the flames the silver undercoat and primercoat peeled off! I have not got up the nerve to try again.
  4. Charles - Like Pete I have been watching and learning from your posts. I have been wanting to do a Diorama of 2 German WW-2 Bridge Layers fording a stream. The sticking point for me has always been finding just the right Bridge Supports from the after market that would fit into what I wanted to do. I have never found exactly what I need, but this technique you are using would allow me to make my own Bridge parts exactly as I need them. Great Build and I hope to see a lot more.
  5. Pete - yes I will be at the San Diego Model Car Club meeting tonight, starting at 6:30pm, located at the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park, next door to the SD Air & Space Museum. These meeting are held the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Thought I would throw in a little advertising for the Club! Dan
  6. Mark - A Collection that large may have a lot of kits that are out of production. model Cars Magazine web site has a place for Sale, Trade or wants list on Models and Parts. You would need to list the Manufacturer, Kit Number and parts number with description of parts need and you probably will get a fairly quick reply. Hope this helps.
  7. Pete - In the photo's above where you are soldering the Cowl Flaps are you using your resistance Soldering equipment for that or some other type [standard, silver or butane torch]? This project looks like it is coming along very well, I look forward to seeing it when it is done. Also how did you attach them to the Engine Cage?
  8. Mark - I did not know that Revell ever did a kit of a 1955 Pontiac Modified? This time period for GM, Pontiac's, Buick's, Old's, Caddy's and of coarse Chevy's I think is the best design's of that era. Also what type of modified? Nascar racers in 1955 were truly stock Stock Cars with almost no safety equipment in them.
  9. Marcos - I just got my January 2014 issue of Model Cars Magazine where your Testa Rossa is on the cover. Both the model and the article you did is outstanding. Keep up the great work and I hope to see more of your work in the Magazine.
  10. Pedro - weathering is looking very good. it is a good thing that the Germans never developed this for WW-2 or we would be in big trouble! Although with all the Germany 46 design's showing up who knows? Greyhound
  11. Pete - This is looking very good. Problem solving is one of things I most like about building models. DK
  12. Marcos - Fantastic job! I have had several friends build this kit and they tell me that it is a very difficult to build model. The biggest problem they reported is getting the body, interior and frame to all fit properly. Did you have any problems with it?
  13. Mark - Ok- I am seriously impressed with what is see here! it is hard to believe that you guys can squeeze that much detail in so little space. I hope to see some of this at The Winterfest contest at Gillespie Field on Saturday January 25th in the San Diego Air and Space Museum Gellespie Field Annex.
  14. Al - Thanks for the additional photo. The u-shape work area is a good use of space, with a rolling chair like that you can just roll to area you need. My problem with getting enough space is due to a large number of unbuilt models and thousands of hobby and car magazines. I have saved the mags for reference but I realized I only need the articles that interest me. A friend suggested that I Dis-articulate the magazines and only save the specific articles. I have been doing that plus giving away and trashing thousands of mags and it is giving me much more room. I have seperated articles into catigories such as "1932 Ford 3 window" and am placing the articles into large legal size envelopes with description tags. Now when I am looking for reference on "1932 Ford 3 Window with flathead engine" I just go to that envelope and look through it. It is a real time saver. Nice job again on the shop and I will continue to get mine looking that organized.
  15. Al - Wow! This is a very nice set-up. There is obviously a lot of advantages to have several workbench's /space in one area. I have been trying to carve out an area in my garage for a "Paint station" with a paint booth, CO2 tank and Airbrush, paint storage and my food dehydrator that I use to speed up building models. It has taken almost a year to clear an area big enough for everything I need to prep and paint models. Could you show a photo from a distance to see how the whole shop looks? Again, great job and there may be a few jealous people out there that think they may need to upgrade there workshop [including me].
  16. The 5th annual Lower left Coast Model Show is coming up on Saturday, August 17, 2013, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The location will again be at The Carlsbad California Senior Center at 799 Pine Street, Carlsbad , Ca. This event is sponsored by Model Cars Magazine and is a fundraiser for Victory Junction Camp for Kids. This is a NNL type event that has always had a great turnout and a large number of vendors. This show has some of the best raffle prizes of any event I go to. They have raised lots of $$$ for Victory Junction over the years. Although this is a NNL type event they do have a few awards such as Adult Fab Five Awards, Junior Top Trio and other Special Awards. If you get tired of looking at models or buying stuff the Beach is about 4 blocks from The Senior Center. Hope to see a lot of Southern Cal Modelers there!
  17. Federico - You did a great job on this model! I have the Roden Pattern 1920 MK.1 version with the solid Artillery or Carriage wheels and this version looks so much better. The wire wheels look like they are very fragile? Looks like I will need to do some shopping for this version. Ron - Awesome job on your scratchbuilt version!
  18. Federico - Great job on the Kubelwagen! I have been working on improving my weathering techniques, but I think I could practice for years and not build anything this good. Great web site, I just need to brush up on my Spanish. Dan King
  19. Mark - I did actually talk to you for about 30 seconds just when you were coming in to the show. You had been held up by that terrible accident on Interstate-5 north of Oceanside and I was just leaving the show. Many of my LA. area friends were late or did not show-up because of that accident. I was hoping to see if you had finished your Dennis Fire Engine? You always bring ;lots of very interesting models to these shows and I look forward to seeing them. The next show I should be at is MiniCon in Ontario on June 29th and hopefully to OrangeCon later this year. We will be having the Lower left Coast NNL on Saturday August 17th at the Carlsbad California Senior Center. This is a Automotive Model event NNL style with very limited awards, but it is a great event. They have raised $$$ for Victory Junction Camp for Kids plus lots of vendors and some of the best raffle prizes ever. I usually am a vendor at this event. There are really no classes so you just bring what you have and put it on the table. Anyway hope to see you soon. Dan King
  20. Al - Thank you very much for this info! I was at the San Diego Model Expo earlier today and looked for 1/24 - 1/25 scale resin and metal figures that look like they could be converted into Steampunk and ended up buying 2 resin figures. Looking at steampunk figures on line there is a lot of specific details that make them steampunk, so it will be a lot of work. If I can find correct figure it will be easier and quicker [ yes I know as a modeler I should rise to the challenge, but there is only so many hour in the day!]and I want to put effort into the vehicle. Dan
  21. Hi all - This coming Saturday, June 1st, 2013, will be the San Diego Model Expo Regional Contest & Swap Meet. This is hosted by San Diego IPMS and San Diego Model Car Club/IPMS with the Swap Meet put on by The San Diego Air &Space Museum. Location is San Diego Air & Space Museum Annex located on the north side of Gillespie Field, 335 Kenney Street, El Cajon, Ca. 92020. Look for the shiny full size Atlas Rocket sitting in front! Times are: Swap Meet 8 am to 1 pm, Model Registration 9 am, Awards Presentation 3 pm. This year special theme is In The Movies, any model in any class that has a connection to The Movies could be elegible for special award. This contest has 10 Automotive categories and car models will be judged by San Diego Model Car Club. I believe someone told me that about 60 vendor tables have been sold and last year there were great bargains to be had. This is a great event, and remember The Wings Over Gillespie Airshow will be happening right next door so you get a free Airshow also. Check the San Diego IPMS web site on IPMS/USA home page for details and a flyer. Hope to see some of you there!
  22. Hi all - I am doing a theme night model for the San Diego Model Car Club with a Steampunk theme. I would like to know if 1. Are there any web sites out there dedicated to Steampunk Modeling? 2. Does anyone know if there are a 1/25 scale Steampunk Figure, preferably Male, carrying an outlandish type weapon? I did find the Chronoscope & Reaper minatures web site, but they only do 54mm figures.
  23. Mark - I have several of those Dennis Fire engine kits in several scales. If you let me know what scale yours is and what part I would be glad to look for it for you. I could mail it to you or give it to you at next event we are at. Dan King
  24. Eric - I noticed that only IPMS San Diego is listed. We also have San Diego Model Car Club/IPMS. They meet on 3rd Tuesday of each month at The San Diego Automobile Museum in Balboa Park.
  25. Thank you for all the info on this, John and David. This is enough to do more research on this and its cool that the decals are in 72/48 and 32 scales, I just need to find P-47 of my choice.
