  1. Thanks for the heads up Dennis. I just bought both TIE fighter versions, the X-Wing and the Y-Ying kits. They also had Slave 1 and the Jedi Starfighter too. The only one they didn't have was the Millinieum Falcon.

I'm not too much into Sci-Fi kits, but I used to have a few of these kits and got rid of them awhile back. However, I kind of regretted dumping them as they looked like they would be fun to build. Sooooo, with the cheap prices on the kits, I decided to pick some up. Thanks again.

  2. Yep, the wheels are in a non-intuitive place on AA's site. Weird as everything else is consistent.

If you can't find the wheels at R&J, you might consider ordering directly from AA. The British Pound is in the toilet so the exchange rate is pretty good, postage is reasonable and ordering from AA is very easy. Of course they are one of my WarWheels sponsors, but even before that, they provided me with great service...

  3. decide to include vinyl tires in their kits?

IMHO, they don't look realistic, detail is softer in many cases, they are harder to paint/weather/work with, some of the nastier versions react negatively with the plastic rims and they probably cost the model company more to include vs molded plastic.

I know that these are kind of gimmick, just like folding wings and landing gear on some aircraft kits. However, is there any "real" reason I'm missing why this is a good idea?

Please enlighten my Friday... won't you?

  5. Hi Mark.

Thanks for your input. Actually, we did consider other scales besides 1/35. However, both Dave Haugh and I are primarily 1/35 scale modelers and about 95% of the nominations were from 1/35 modelers as well, so obviously the results were skewed that way. You definitely have good points and I wish we had more info/nominations on the small scale scene. I believe we only had two non-1/35 nominations...

We plan on doing another awards selection for 2009 and I'll make sure I stress that all scales are included. In addition, I'll make sure we hit the braille scale boards to make sure everyone there knows they haven't been forgotten.

If you hadn't seen our original posting, here are the fine details…

Due to the unprecedented amount of armored car/wheeled fighting vehicle (WFV) related modeling products that have been released this year, Co-Editor Dave Haugh and I have decided to start a new tradition for WarWheels. That new tradition is to publicly recognize what we consider the best armored car/ WFV related model products released in each calendar year. These Awards will be called the "WarWheels.Net Hobby Modeling Awards", AKA "The Wheelies".

We will award a framed certificate to the manufacturers who we have deemed to be the winners of awards in each of the following three (3) categories:

Best Armored Car/WFV Model Kit (Any Medium)

    Best Armored Car/WFV Aftermarket Item

    Best Armored Car/WFV Reference (Book/Magazine/CD-ROM)

To help us determine these winners, we need some help from YOU. We are looking for you to provide us with nominations for award finalists in the above three categories.

Therefore, we hope you can send us 1-2 product nominations for each of the "Best Of" categories. Your nominated products can be produced in any scale, medium or representing any era, but must have been released in 2008, need to "fit" in one of the three product categories and need to be Armored Car/WFV related or products that can be used in conjunction with armored car/WFV models.

By our definition, an armored car/WFV is any wheeled vehicle that is armored (either with or without weapons) OR a wheeled vehicle that is un-armored, but is equipped with weapons AND the vehicle has a primary purpose of offensive or defensive combat operations including reconnaissance. The only exceptions to this definition are motorcycles. For example, a "deuce and half" cargo truck with a machine gun mounted is NOT considered a WFV; but a Vietnam Era M35 Gun Truck IS considered a WFV.

We will accept nominations until December 31, 2008. Once we reach the nomination deadline, Dave and I will choose and announce the finalists in each category. VERY Soon after the finalists are determined, we will choose and announce the winners of each award. The finalists and winners will be determined by Dave and me based upon a number of factors including your nominations.

Okay, now that all the B.S. has been explained, we need your nominations. Please send in your nominations to the e-mail address patrix1@hotmail.com . We definitely look forward to your ideas and participation!!
